"Maharaja," directed by Nithilan Swaminathan, is Vijay Sethupathi's 50th film, showcasing his exceptional comic timing and vulnerability. The dark thriller features a fast-paced, non-linear screenplay, keeping audiences engaged. Swaminathan's writing, combined with efficient editing, creates a clever plot that respects the audience's intelligence. Vijay Sethupathi's portrayal of the dour-faced barber Maharaja is compelling, making even absurd scenarios believable and authentic. Despite its strengths, the film faces criticism for its treatment of sexual violence, handling it with questionable sensitivity and occasionally portraying it from the perpetrator's perspective. Mamta Mohandas and Anurag Kashyap deliver strong supporting performances, though some characters and plot threads could have been better developed. Despite its flaws, "Maharaja" is a notable addition to Sethupathi's filmography, celebrating his versatile acting skills.
"Made in Nalbari" tells the intertwined journey of three strangers from Jorhat to Guwahati, each with a unique connection to Nalbari, Assam. Bibhuti Bhushan Hazarika, a filmmaker on a deadline, forms an accidental bond with Jintu Kumar Kashyap, who dreams of car ownership, and Arun Nath, seeking to surprise his wife. The screenplay balances their personal histories with present-day interactions, showcasing their shared humanity. While lacking in subplots for deeper conflict, the film captivates through natural dialogue and realistic performances. Director Tanuj Nath imbues poetic realism through cinematography and music, though some era details are amiss in flashbacks. The narrative's focus on characters over plot mirrors road movie conventions, achieving a subtle, heartwarming tone rather than grandeur. Despite its gentle impact, "Made in Nalbari" resonates as a sincere portrayal of personal journeys intersecting on the road of life.
"Birha" is a short film that explores the theme of separation and longing. The film features a protagonist who returns to his homeland with a single desire in his heart, and the narrative revolves around the activities and performances of the characters. The film is driven by universal emotions and delivers visceral reactions. The technical aspects of the film contribute to its impact. Rajit Kapoor delivers an outstanding performance as the aging father, and Manav Vij's portrayal of the son is commendable. The film effectively conveys a haunting sense of loneliness. While it incorporates a twist in the end, which may seem like a cliche, it doesn't diminish the overall impact of the story. "Birha" stays true to its theme and finds an apt rhythm for exploring the subject, making it a compelling short film.
