this is certainly one of the best movie this year, i like the story, i like the screenplay, i like the scene through the film, i like the actors in the movie... it's a sad story, sad in the heart. it's the crash between compassion and sensibility. it's the complexity of life, human being's life. i appreciate the structure of the story, when Hahna left Micheal suddenly, when she confessed the crime falsely, when Micheal changed his mind at the gate of the detention...and when Micheal at last met her before her release, that scene made me cry. i appreciate the performance by the cast, of course Kate Winslet did her best in this movie, her expression is unforgettable in our mind.
This is my first movie which made me weeping. The first time I watched it in cinema was in eighties last century, as a very young man, I maybe could not understand everything in the story,or the history, but I wept, could not help, when I had seen old Osaki crying with Keiko's towel in her hand. This scene has been stayed in my mind forever since that moment. From this film, I have understood that a movie could make you cry! More than twenty years after I watched it,now, as a forty-four years old man, when I had watched the DVD again, it still makes me cry! That is pain in your heart when you see the old woman, now I understand everything in the story, I understand that's the pain of life, pain of the fate. This is not only a movie, but a lesson which teaches us something about humanity, so emotionally. In my heart,Kinuyo Tanaka was the one of greatest actress in the world,I love her, because of "Sandakan No. 8 ",because of her skillful performance, because she has impressed me so much,so long time, because she also made me call her: mum!
John Woo is the one of the best directors in Hong Kong,he is also the only famous one there who has made films in Hollywood, like "face off",that i praised. But I think the "Chibi" is just so so. Is it a history drama? not very much. is it a martial art action movie? being little like. is it a funny film? maybe not,is it a love story? not clearly. I can't find Mr.Woo's trace in Chibi, this is a movie you can't make sure what kind of it is, no style at all. The worst is the war scene in the end, less reality, more martial art action, and a little funny. so I think it's just a third-class movie, except the beautiful wide scale scene.,Mr.Woo has been lost in Chibi? maybe.
