What an exciting, thrilling, incredibly well scripted and superbly acted dramatic detective series. I cannot begin to describe the total euphoria of discovering such a brilliantly conceived and acted series. Matthew Goode is the ideal lead, and the interplay as the English detective in Edinburgh with the Scottish cast is brilliant. Clever, dead on, captures that dynamic beautifully and it begins with an opening sequence that one simply cannot forget. The casting is superb, and thank heavens someone had the sense to hire talented Scottish actors so we didn't have to suffer through Cambridge or Essex accents torturing our lovely creative doric. As I'm Edinburgh based, I loved spotting the local hangouts (groaning in discontent when a character rubbed greyfriars bobby's nose and then loved it when ascerbic Matthew Goode makes the same point we all do when we see tourists do it!). What a potent, clever, complicated and interrelated script, so kudos to the writers who clearly understand and appreciate a clever legal and procedural drama. What a beginning. What an ending. Ending was perfect. I wouldn't change a thing about any of the series, just beg for more seasons as soon as possible with such an incredible cast. Thank you Netflix!!!!
I honestly wanted to really settle in and enjoy every aspect of this true life crime. I was also interested (as a former prosecutor) in the portrayal of the legal process. The major problem was the camera work that literally gave me a headache so I had to eke out the time I allowed myself to watch the show. How much red bull did that camera man take? It's truly headache inducing, but the cocodamol got me to the end. Wonderful show, fire the cameraman. Or at least, try and avoid approaching the telling of a compelling story by making the watcher feel as though they're on a trampoline the whole time. Bottom line, fabulous show, but I really want to watch the actors without squinting to avoid the jittery camera work.
I don't care if accents are on point or not, what I look for is drama, conflict, emotional development, unforgettable characters and a sweeping epic that holds my attention from beginning to end. This is truly an outstanding and thought provoking film, and each and every character hooked me in to the story line and the sheer living breathing hurting humanity. Whether you're a man or a woman or in between (as I think one of the characters says at one point) the film throbs with the intensity of what it feels to love and the pain that sometimes it is to live a life that isn't yours. I just loved every mesmerising second and kudos to everyone who had the vision to see this film made.
