The show tries to create some gruesome circumstances and situations and then removes much of that weight with intersparsed humor. Unfortunately, this balancing doesn't quite work here. As a comedy it's much too underplayed and as dark fantasy it doesn't let you suspend your disbelief. They should have gone all serious and left out all the relationship and workplace bickering.
Kessler does a surprisingly good job as the rattled psychologist considering his mostly comedic resume but some other comedy actors are clearly miscast, like Alexander Schubert.
The scenes are very dark sometimes but the setpieces are beautiful and ominous.
Overall, it's an enjoyable watch but there's nothing that warrants repeated viewings.

Much has been said about this show already and it's merit as an anime show. However, while anime is usually constructed as periodic pure entertainment this show trancends not only that format in terms of writing but most regular tv shows as well. The way the whole mystery is constructed impeccably from start to finish, always answering one question while raising two new ones is testament to true genius. Many have attempted it ("Lost", few have really achieved it, leaving the viewer dissatisfied.
But the greatest achievement of his series is probably to draw a horror and fantasy crowd in and subvert all expections with a theme about the human tragedy of war and the neverending circle of violence. Yes, at its heart "Attack on Titan" (which should really be called "The Attack Titan" since that other translation makes little sense) is about human nature and suffering and how there's really no escape in this life. The only way is forward, to go with the flow and make the best of every situation. Right and wrong are merely a matter of perspective and several shifts of perspective are masterfully executed throughout the series.
If you think youself you cannot be manipulated in your beliefs, here you will be thoroughly educated. Let's just hope that the greatest manipulators will use their skills for storytelling and not worse.

This was one of the best TV episodes I have ever seen in my entire life, hands down. Just a fireworks of brilliant ideas following a masterplan. Pure chaos resolves into Catharsis, a seemingly unrelated series of sometimes trying events culminating into a consolitary outcome which connects them all. A metaphor for the endless strife of life and a mirror of the series warm and optimistic outlook on it as a whole. This episode was a pure joy to behold and the highlight of this overall awesome series so far. The low ratings probably reflect just how intelligent the script was. Props also go to the awesome cast, everyone of which is doing a superb job taking the viewer on a rollercoast of emotions.
