I first saw this movie as Spaceship when I was in the 10th grade, and I've watched it so many times I can replay it in my head when desired. :-)
It's funny not because it's a bad movie. It's funny because it parodies the bad movies from the 50's and does it in such a way that the caricatures of the actors from those movies have similar (or even opposite) caricatures in this one.
For example, Captain Jameson (Leslie Nielsen) acts like any other 50's super-captain in any other schlock movie. Heck, he even poses with his gun (looks like a water gun) for a second or two in a "heroic" pose. Of course, he also has his dark side, since he only looks down women's blouses when he thinks nobody is watching.
Dr. Starke is the typical scientist, probing into "things that man was not meant to know." Of course, it is his actions that send everybody into danger.
Rodzinski's behavior, on the other hand, is designed to be the opposite of the heroic captain's sidekick. He is dirty, disgusting and perverted. He's hilarious. I mean, imagine Robin (the Boy Wonder, not Williams) acting that way.
Officer McCue (sp?) and John round out the cast as the female everybody wants and the lowly person in newer movies who manages to save the day.
Of course, your mileage may vary. Expect it to be a bad movie (which it is), but enjoy it anyway.

I hated it when Misfits of Science ended. However, I did hear that it was because Dean Paul Martin died in an airplane accident. (He was, IIRC, a member of the Air National Guard.) It wasn't just cancelled.
(And I agree. I also had a crush on Courtney Cox.) :-)
