The story is awful the CGI is everywhere and the characters unbelievable. Even more boring than John Wick - Russian bad guys now replaced by the Chinese. Thinly veiled bigotry and only the cowboys are heroes. The Chinese all end up dead but none of the protagonists. The score is passable the cinematography at times inventive but it's two hours better spent prepping vegetables for a Sunday Roast... Hardy should look carefully at his repertoire this does nothing to enhance his craft. As for Whittaker he doesn't play bad guy well at all ever. Netflix is in desperate need of a new creative direction. Their content is depressingly tired.
This is an epic. It certainly borrows from Legend Of The Falls and a nod towards A Farewell To Arms as narratives.
The cinematography is accomplished and the scoring excellent - Forever Blowing Bubbles adds a strange pastiche of emerging Western resonance in a land lurching from imperial servitude to an independent republic.
Perhaps most poignantly- and there's a lot of poignant material on offer - we see the turmoil and chaos of humanity counter mining the inhumanity of the ethnic cleansing that is told bravely against hitherto accepted doctrines There's plenty of love both lost and found and deep sentiment This is an epic by any definition - lush and unique. Like Bertolucci's 1900 you may not appreciate all the subtlety and nuances at first sight but revisit this masterpiece and it's a masterpiece.

The second series grates with. Jack O'Connells awful faux Irish accent. It's too focused on his character unlike Series 1 which was more rounded. After fifteen minutes he just tires you out with his drawl.
My grandpa was in L Section as it was known in WW2. He wasn't a swaggering cartoon character but the real deal. Quietly stoic and a gentleman.
As for cinematography it is very high quality with good continuity and authentic sets. The costumes are realistic although it was practically unheard of to see a woman in trousers in that period so I would criticise it on that.
Series 2 doesn't have the same energy as Series 1. More dialogue and less action...
