Hi,

I thought I'd use this space to talk about my tastes and bias as a movie fan and to show how I rate movies.

I love movies of all kinds. Thrillers, comedies, horror, drama... you name it. Although I'm a man, I can dig chick flicks when I'm in the mood for that, but they need to be first class. As far as trends are concerned, again I dig all sorts of films. Hollywood, international cinema (Europe, Asia, Latin America... anything). Indie films, blockbusters, I'm game for anything and believe that if taken for what they are, movies can be satisfying.

As far as my judging is concerned, I judge based solely on MY EXPERIENCE AS A VIEWER. That means, if I am watching a micro-production filmed on a $10,000 budget with amateur actors, I'm still going to judge the acting the very same way I'd judge a film starring professionals. I'm not going to be less forgiving, nor should anyone else I might add. I can enjoy both style and substance. I'm not easy to offend but I don't LOOK for shock value. I'm also not the kind of person who'll give points for "nudity" or "gore". I find such behavior extremely... weird, to be polite.

Here's what the ratings mean, followed by ways to adjust them. You'll note I am a little more "harsh" than the average imdb rater. There are far too many 10s on imdb. 10 to me means perfection or close to it.

10: The mythical perfection. No movie is likely to achieve this, although a few can come close.

9: This is a masterpiece, should be part of your collection even if it's a genre you don't typically enjoy. It transcends trends as well as eras. There are very few such movies.

8: This is an amazing movie and again, one that you can recommend to anyone, no matter their tastes. Usually, the best few movies of the year are in this category or higher. You'll probably want to own this one.

7: This is a great movie. The kind of movie you'll not regret paying for a ticket at the local cinema and not regret watching unless it's really not your kind of flick. There are probably a few things here and there that could have made this a better film but it's still a nice one. Fans of the genre will want this in their collection, others will just be happy to watch it.

6: This is a good enough movie. It's not great or anything but you'll be glad you saw it. It's probably not something you'll want to own unless you are a die hard fan of the genre or the lead actors but it's nice enough that you might watch it again on TV or with some friends who haven't seen it.

5: This is just decent. You can kill time watching this movie without regretting it but it's not something to put in your agenda and you wouldn't bump something more important to watch this. Seeing this flick once will be enough. Its faults in subsequent viewings will become more and more annoying and you'd be better off trying a new film.

4: Poor effort. Not a movie you're glad you watched. Not the most pleasant experience but not a "give me back my time/money" dud either. There were probably some redeeming values in this. Perhaps the clever sketch of a plot, or a nice performance. But you certainly wish it had been better fleshed out. You can suffer through this movie without skipping but watching it again is masochism.

3: Boring movie. Some parts of this movie should have been skipped or totally reworked. There's probably some potential there but it's totally wasted. There wasn't much worthwhile here and to make it work, you'd need to make a movie that doesn't even ressemble this one.

2: Crappy. These are the worse films you see in a year, if you are unlucky enough. There aren't that many movies which are that bad. There's no reason to watch this one, ever, for anyone.

1: Just like the mythical 10. This is legendary crap that makes children cry :)

How to bump ratings up or down:

Films are very subjective and not everybody has the same tastes. If you are:

Fan of the genre being reviewed: +1
Hardcore fan of the genre being reviewed: +2
Dislike the genre being reviewed: -1
Hate the genre being reviewed: -2
Like some of the actors in the film: +1
Diehard fan of an actor: +2
Dislike actors in the film: -1

And so on. These are just guidelines. Some people, for instance, can't stand subtitles. Feel free to subtract 1 or 2 off the score of a subtitled flick if you hate them.

At the end of the day, remember that movies should be enjoyed. Do not take these (or ANY) ratings too seriously. Nobody can tell you what you should like or not. It is my hope, however, to provide objective reviews and ratings that well-adjusted people can rely on. If you've hated a film I have given a high score too, I only hope you'll give the movie a second try but in the end, we can disagree and that's alright.

Enjoy films and don't hesitate to contact me!

  • One of the strongest TV series from Québec despite the miscasting

This poignant yet funny series follows the evolution of three (young?) women of modest background. It features raw acting, sometimes looking almost like an improvised performance that is quite interesting.

While Ada, Caro and Fabiola are front and center, various characters surround them, most of them just as vulnerable as the three best friends.

First the good: As many reviews mention, this series succeeds in presenting a mix of comedic silliness and stunning drama. The second thing that hooked me was their environment. This series is beautifully shot and the poor neighborhood the girls grew up in is a character of its own, in all its beauty and tragedy. This constantly drives the point home: the delicate balance between being the master of your own destiny, but how strongly your origins impact you. I found this beautiful.

For the bad now. The character of Ada is portrayed as what seems like a 20 year old character with the maturity of a teenager. Problem is, Ada is.played by actress Florence Longpré, 33 at the time this was shot. This is... awkward. It gets worse. The character of Caro starts off as what can be best described as a 14 year old tomboy. Problem is... it's played by Eve Landry, a 34 year old woman at the tie of shooting.

The third friend is fortunately a struggling but more mature character, often acting like a stabilizing presence for the two others. Fabiola is portrayed by singer Mélissa Bédard who was in her mid-twenties at the time this was shot and compensates her lack of acting experience with a raw, authentic presence and a lot of natural comedic talent.

It is very unfortunate that two of the three main characters were totally miscast. As the series started, I was extremely confused seeing two mature women in their mid-30s playing what sounded like teenager. I genuinely thought this was about mentally retarded women.

Still, the series has several strong moments and gets slightly better with each season, despite a strong tendency to neglect male characters in the most obvious way.

  • Hey look, it's another movie by that guy who directed "The Sixth Sense"!!!

In 1999, M. Night Shyamalan released an amazing movie by the name of "The Sixth Sense". That movie had a captivating plot that it revealed bit by bit. The slow pace of the movie was warranted by the exquisite atmosphere, solid writing and some great performances.

Those qualities that were found a very long time ago in this director's work are now completely missing. "Old" still has a crawling pace but instead of creating tension, its nonsensical story, the awful acting, the poor writing, all contribute to making the viewer cringe.

We learn from the trivia section of imdb that the movie "Old" is the adaptation of a graphic novel that left a great impression on Shyamalan. Here's a quote from the director:

"The book gave me the opportunity to work through a lot of anxieties I had around death and aging, and things like my parents getting older.""

And yet, the handling of the central theme of Old, which is aging, is handled extremely poorly and cheaply throughout the duration of the film. It's almost as if Shyamalayan turned this venture into a "who dies next" type of film and didn't bother to explore the theme of maturation at all.

Another missed opportunity from a director who unfortunately, never quite recaptured the magic found in that 1999 movie that made him a household name, a long time ago now.

  • Fails to engage

The scenes involving "old school" drug lord Pablo Acosta are very tedious and hurting the show. For one thing, the character is poorly developed while the scenes are drawn out. The intrigue concerning an old feud comes out of nowhere and lacks any emotional punch because we never knew those characters. It doesn't help that the tone is all over the place from melodramatic to comical with the awkward relationship and comedy betweenPablo and Amado.

With four previous seasons of compelling characters plotting against each other and hurting one and another, you would think they would have all the base material for a compelling vengeance scenario with characters and events we have an emotional investment in. Instead, we have long scenes about a guy we barely know, and his old feud with a guy we don't even know.

Gerardo Taracena's portrayal of Acosta is lackluster, which also doesn't help. The rest of episode is also vanilla and continues the drop in quality compared to Narcos: Mexico season 1.

I'm starting to understand why season 3 is on hold.
