  • A very good film, but not for everyone.

Let's start from the beginning - the film's plot is an age-old tale. A spoiled rich kid marries to spite his parents, and something has to be done about it.

But it can be shot brilliantly. The film is a drama unfolding in the rhythm of a madcap comedy (certain set pieces reminded me of Bong Joon-ho's "Parasite"). Sean Baker delights in shouting. Throughout the film, the characters repeatedly shout at each other simultaneously and or engage in disconnected interactions with other people. The screen is often in complete chaos, with everyone shouting, each to a different person. This creates a fantastic on-screen effect. While some viewers may feel utter chaos, I enjoyed it, but I understand that some might find it tiring.

Mikey Madison is a volcano of energy. But it is also worth paying attention to the absolutely episodic role of the Russian oligarch (Aleksey Serebryakov), who plays extremely sparingly, but when he laughs in the registry office he steals the show.

  • An excellent, important film, but not for everyone.

Let's start by saying that this is an atmospheric, almost theatrical psychological film. If you're looking for fast-paced action, this isn't it. If you're an anticlimactic conspiracy theorist, then don't watch it.

The film can be viewed on two levels. Based on true events, it tells the story of a (pseudo)media scandal in which a renowned climate scientist was embroiled after his emails were hacked.

Jason Watkins proves once again his excellence as a hounded man who must prove his innocence. Almost every scene is brilliant: the professor's conversation with the policewoman, the PR training, and the PR specialist's conversations with his father, and finally the two scientists discussion about the Fermi paradox in the context of climate change.

But this film is also an incredibly universal story about the modern world. About the place we've arrived, where widespread science denial (from climate change to vaccines) is already a fact of life. We see very clearly here that:
    • scientists use a hermetic language, and most of them have no chance to convey their knowledge to the public. As one of the film's characters says: you can find this information in the scientific press, but you have to know where to look and understand the message.

    • Massive disinformation campaigns that are much more attractive than scientists.

    • The media (and I'm not talking about tabloids, but the world's biggest titles) are ready to sensationalize a few sentences taken out of context, constantly analyzing (pseudo)information they don't understand.

    • As the main character says: nobody cares about the truth.

    • Even before the climate summit, everyone knows it will fail (and completely regardless of the pseudo-scandal).

    • The fate of a prominent scientist's career may depend on whether he presents well on television, as two PR specialists are training him to do.

In summary, this is an excellent film about how we all live in a society of spectacle (a loose allusion to Guy Debord).

  • A very important documentary

    And incredibly brave.

Members of a self-help group share their experiences with perinatal mental health disorders. Their confessions are incredibly intimate and courageous, as the negative aspects of motherhood are among the most taboo in our civilization. The women speak of doctors ignoring symptoms, shame about their own thoughts, and recall historical witch trials and embarrassing contemporary statistics on ethnic discrimination in healthcare.

The film is richly illustrated with film clips showing, among other things, the profound infantilization of motherhood in popular culture. This means that women experiencing perinatal mental health disorders are often left completely alone with their problems, which sometimes ends tragically. And although subsequent embarrassing statistics confirm this, this issue is absent from the social and political debate, at least in most countries. Many documentaries address important social issues: economic inequality, discrimination against certain social groups, the planet's ecological degradation, dictatorial regimes and harsh laws targeting political dissidents, and the distortions of late capitalism. Yet, all of these issues are widely known. Perinatal mental health disorders are perhaps the most hermetic topic, one that remains largely unspoken. Or rarely and quietly discussed. This is why this is one of the most important documentaries, as it explores a widely unknown issue.
