As a believer in Jesus Christ, I personally found this episode offensive, only because I saw it as a swipe at the sacrifice of God's only son Jesus. This story very much mirrors what God and Jesus did for us, in that he sacrificed his one and only son to die a terrible death for us, so that all may live.
But in this episode, that offended the morals of our hero, such that he had to try and stop it. Now I'll readily admit that Jesus suffering is over and was only temporary, however horrible it may have been, whereas the child in this one seemed just doomed to die without any resurrection, but to me I felt this was just a criticism or swipe at Gods great plan for mankind, salvation through the death of his son on the cross.
Star. Trek has always undermined the faith, with its consistent evolutionary story line, but I'll give a 1 to anything which so directly criticizes God's great plan of salvation. They left out the best part of the story for Jesus (the kid) his glorious resurrection soon after.

This episode was a very poor ending to what I consider a subpar season, though my elementary standards that still means there was a number of really signed episodes in season three.
The motive for the criminal in this case was about as ridiculous as I could ever think of. I've seen worse, but not a lot worse. And then hold actions in the end, mind you I haven't seen any of the next four seasons, just were Ludacris and non-sensical. It seems the writer wanted a certain solution, but they had no thought to doesn't make sense to get to the solution this in this manner.
This is a very poor episode at least of the solution. It wasn't too bad until the end maybe the last five or 10 minutes where it jumped the shark more or less.
