Wet Hot American Summer is movie about shenanigans that occur on the last day of a kids camp in 1981. It's just filled with oddities and awkwardness. I think the awkward balance of humor and seemingly surreal moments is what makes the film oddly charming and a guilty pleasure. Paul Rudd is just starting out, Bradley Cooper's first. Is it clever or is it stupid? I now know.
I kept watching because Aubrey Plaza does a great job getting the story, that is not quite obvious at the beginning, going. The premise is strange and you have to use your suspension of disbelief to go along with the story, however I ultimately really liked the movie. As I said, Aubrey Plaza does a great job, Maisy Stella is wonderful, as well as Percy Hynes. I'm not enough of a movie buff to know if it will get any awards, but I wouldn't be surprised if it got some. Another hit for Aubrey IMHO.
I didn't hate it. Cena did a good job.
The movie isn't going to go down as a classic or anything, but the story is slightly deeper than you would expect. There are enough twists and turns in it that I didn't see coming to keep it enjoyable enough. Some scenes have horrible special effects (in particular the horse riding scene...) but it doesn't detract from an otherwise enjoyable movie.
