No Bangladeshi film in recent memory has created such hype in the hearts of the audience as Hawa, a film directed by Mejbaur Rahman Sumon. The film has been released in twenty-four halls across the country, and all tickets have been sold out for nearly a week.
Such a feat has never been seen before, at least in a decade. The film has rocked the cradle with amazing tracks like 'Shada Shada Kala Kala,' 'E Hawa,' and had there been a music chart in our industry, the two songs would have been chart-busters.
Extensive marketing and promotion create additional pressure on films, as it raises the bar high. Most of the time, the film fails to deliver a result good enough to back such promotion, but not this time. Hawa has lived up to everybody's expectations, and in places, exceeded them.
The film is not an art-house film per se like Rehana Mariam Noor, nor a commercial film like Poran or Din The Day. The film treads the fine line between the two sections and stands apart. The film is hard to categorise into a certain genre. All that can be said is that it is a nice potboiler of mystery, thrills, and fantasy.
The film relies on its storyline and the performances of the actors, which is indicative of the prowess of Mejbaur Rahman Sumon and the screenwriters, Faruque Jahan Amin and Sukorno Shahed Dhiman. The cinematography has been the best in Dhallywood so far, as has been the CGI and graphics (unlike a certain hundred-crore film!).
The film has a distinctly local vibe, from its background music to its treatment of the plot, the audience will find the lingering smell of their own story. Everything has been developed from scratch, and all the characters have gone through their distinctive arcs.
The film could have treated its ending with a bit more nuance and care, but that is alright. The plot is a slow-burning journey with some explosive, raw moments of conflict where the audience will be on the edge of their seats. The film is full of expletives and some adult bits, and the uncensored expletives result in some of the most hilarious moments in the film.
Several prominent actors appeared in the film, including Chanchal Chowdhury, Nazifa Tushi, Sariful Razz, Shohel Mondol, Nasir Uddin Khan, and Sumon Anowar, and everyone delivered.
Veteran actor Chanchal Chowdhury has stolen the spotlight as Chaan Majhi, the captain of the fishing boat. Shariful Razz has delivered the best performance of his career so far (such lines have been written after Gunin and Poran as well!). Nazifa Tushi as Gulti has left an impact on the screen with her powerful performance. Both Nasir Uddin Khan and Sumon Anwar have lived up to their names, as has Sohel Mondol, even though he did not have much screen presence.
The technical aspects of the film have been superb, even though the background music has been too loud to hear the actual dialogues of the film at times. The scale on which the film has been made is immensely attractive and grandiose. Sometimes the actors spoke in proper Bangla, not in the dialect, which felt a little out of place.
The film could be a game-changer for the Bangladeshi film industry. Give it a try, just make sure the children are not with you; well, it's not an adult film either.

Orphan: First Kill: Prequel to Orphan (2009), Isabelle Fuhrman reprises her role as Leena, the psychotic 30 year old Person Of Restricted Growth (PORG) who is an 8 year old in this film set in 2007 in Estonia. Some very disturbing horror scenes throughout the film but it does pivot into being a black comedy about half way through. There are some plot twists at this point which I can't reveal without giving away too much. Leena is confined to a Forensic Psychiatric Unit but she manipulates guards and other patients, escaping, leaving a trail of bodies behind her. She takes on the identity of an american girl who disappeared in 2003. Back in the bosom of "her family" in the US she faces some suspicion but continues with her wily ways. Fuhrman is actually 1.6 metres tall and now 23 years of age so a body double was needed for some scenes. Parts of this film may not add up but just take it for what it is - a slasher/black comedy movie. Suspend your disbelief and enjoy it! Directed by William Brent Bell, written by David Coggeshall,10/10.
The Batman is a beautifully crafted film, like Dark Knight quality. The movie has a pretty lengthy (3-hr) runtime but the movie, at least for me, was never slow or boring, it actually kept me on the edge of my seat the whole way through. Now just because I love it, the first 10 minutes of the film are great, it really gets you excited for the movie ahead and establishes itself as a detective story. And from the beginning, Batman is throwing punches left and right. It helps us understand how he's the personification of vengeance. We also see just how much Batman has struck fear into the criminals of Gotham as they're always afraid that he's there in the shadows, waiting to strike. Its presents a terrifying and vengeful Dark Knight that's different from any other former performances. Like I said it also establishes itself as a detective thriller that takes place in a dark, cloudly, constantly rainy Gotham which fits for the tone the movie is going for(think Se7en meets Batman).
Every scene, setting, character, and story as a whole shows just how much care, and thought went into this movie. Now, I'm a genuine fan of Matt Reeves as a director. His other directorial works include the first Cloverfield and Dawn/War for the Planet of the Apes and with this film, and Reeves does a phenomenal job at creating a gritty, thrilling, cinematic noir.
Every performance in this movie is top-notch as well! Robert Pattinson is perfect playing a rageful, kind of beaten down Batman whose true self is not as Bruce Wayne but as Batman. Pattinson does a fantastic job at playing a Bruce Wayne who lives in the shadows and at the same time is a brilliant detective and a symbol of hope and fear in Gotham. Zoe Kravitz fits really well as Catwoman and helps dive deeper into the character's story throughout the movie. Now Paul Dano and Colin Farrell give incredible performances as the Riddler and the Penguin. Dano's Riddler is mysterious and terrifying for the audience and proves to be one of the most deadly villains the Dark Knight has faced of any other Batman movies. His Riddler performance is chilling and deadly and definitely evokes similarities to the real-life Zodiac Killer. Colin Farrell is hilarious and wild as the Penguin and remains unrecognizable throughout the whole movie, but you can tell that he's having fun with it. Jeffrey Wright, John Turturro, and Andy Serkis give A+ performances across the movie as well.
Now about the film as a movie, the cinematography, setting, action/stunts, and general atmosphere of the movie are stunning, combined with a beautiful and chilling score from composer Michael Giacchino, brilliant performances from a stellar cast, and a drastically different story and take from previous Batman films. All and all, The Batman is a must-see picture of 2022 for fans of superheroes, Batman, action, and detective thrillers. I will definitely watch it again in the near future.
