To really enjoy "Frailty" to the fullest extent, it's best to just know that it's a solid thriller with a supernatural tinge. Stay away from reviews! If you know too much from reading reviews, the movie probably won't pack as much of a punch, so I recommend that you just see it if you like a solid, intelligent thriller. If you really like series like first few seasons of "The X-Files," Hitchcock films, or movies such as "Memento" and "The Silence of the Lambs," you'll most likely enjoy "Frailty". It's not as profound as the aforementioned movies, but still highly enjoyable with a dark yet somehow playful mood. It has sort of a comic book feeling to it, reminiscent of the old EC horror comics.
This is a nice effort at creating that slower, atmospheric thriller as another reviewer aptly pointed out, but it loses in not linking the story together, failing to throw the viewer right into the midst of the brewing insanity. The story is very choppy and despite interesting performances by Mullan and Caruso, the characterizations are not as indepth and psychological as they could be. I was left wondering what really drove any of the characters, but I was left ultimately impressed with the absolutely crisp, colorful and moody photography and delirious, gripping sound. Brilliant technical work on this movie; if only Anderson and Gevedon (as auteurs) would have really considered the story more and connected the missing links. A notable attempt at breaking the boring current trend of teen schlock horror.
"Jagarna" was brought to Canadian audiences via the Showcase TV network during a Scandinavian film festival -- and thank goodness it was! What an amazing character-driven story which not only delves into a poaching conspiracy but the emotionally-charged relationship between two brothers. Pure brilliance and highly recommended. An all-time favorite.
