I am astonished when people here pan a film like this. The original source materials is produced by a genius of storytelling and language that cannot be matched.
The only task is to render it and edit it for a film audience. But if you're not an idiot, you can at least produce a 7.5 worth film. More like an 8.
I have seen Shakespeare produced on stage and many times on screen. Yes Polanski's MacB is terrific, partly due to some critical scenes.
This MacB I was hoping would be close. It's fantastic. Presented and acted superbly. Set in some excellent locations (see the "goof" lamenting that the sets are "only" 900 years old and should be 100p years old. Get away.
Sets, action, atmosphere ... all great. BUT with all of this the words speak.
This is the greated writer of stage and, eventually, screen ... ever. Ever. Let those words flow. There will never be another like him.
Great film. Pretty good screenwriter.

This is a really nice look at life in a place and a time. Is it dated? Maybe. But it's dated the way a 1940s noir is dated. It is a reflection of Ireland on the rough side in the 1980s-90s and was not unlike a movie Pierce Brosnan was in for about 15 seconds ... The Long Good Friday.
All I could think while watching the Guiness pour and the tough guys be assholes and the gratuitous stripper scene is, man I miss those days.
Pierce Brosnan often seemed uncomfortable in his roles .. Until he got older. But oddly in The Fourth Protocol and here in Taffin he looks right at home.
Definitely worth a watch.

Back in the dark ages wandering through video rental stores looking for something interesting.
Then you end up renting a movie that s got a little sex, a little (or a lot of) violence, and a real story.
This would've been a very good haul for a Saturday night with friends or with your girlfriend.
Unafraid to touch in touchy subjects.
Great cast. A world where evil really exists.
No apologies. A guy who picks up the chick who runs the feminist bookstore? Hell yeah.
This was the 1980s, man, when we shot and asked questions later if at all and brushed the blood of our Members Only jacket.
When Charles Durning was in almost every movie.
Yes to all of it.
