  • Move to Heaven: an Excellent Job!

Netflix's Move to Heaven is an unexpected gem, one of the best dramas produced from South-Korea, told in a realistic and wonderful way, unique and very original Korean drama, and will truly appeal to a global audience.

Originality, sincerity and universal values are what makes Korean dramas produced by Netflix stand out compared to the regular Korean dramas which are still very catered to the local audience. From Kingdom, to Love Alarm, to Sweet Home and now Move to Heaven. All amazing pieces of art that are unique and very original.

The story centers around trauma cleaners, who are people who clean up and move stuff of the deceased. This explains the title of this drama: Move to Heaven. It is also the name of their company. In 10 episodes we see multiple story arcs evolving, including those of the main characters Han Geu-ru played amazingly by Tang Jun-sang and his uncle Cho Sang-gu. We see very relevant social themes being addressed by the trauma cleaners, all in a very sincere, realistic and emotional way. Keep your tissue box ready though!

A special shout-out to Tang Jun-sang for his epic performance and realistic portrayal of the Asperger syndrome and for connecting the different story lines. His character is smart, remembers everything, connects the dots, and speaks like a robot. It is something that viewers will not easily forget.

Han Geu-ru was told to tell himself every day in the mirror that he did an excellent job. I can only agree, and would like to extend this to the whole show. You did an excellent job!

  • Best Chinese drama

This is the best Chinese drama that has all the ingredients: great cast, story, cinematography, music, humor, and lots of love and warmth. It is the gold standard for Chinese dramas in terms of production value that at least matches and surpasses the quality of Korean dramas. I hope more Chinese dramas will follow this production quality. "A Love So Beautiful," highly recommended and truly beautiful!

  • Record of Disappointment

This drama is at times enjoyable, but overall is quite a disappointment due to the bad script and bad acting.

The lead actress Park So-dam, who got fame as the daughter in Parasite, showed surprisingly a lack of range. Her expressions: happy, sad, or angry were all bland and similar. I did not believe she was a real person. The 2nd lead male actor played by Byeon Woo-seok deserves some acting lessons. It was just aweful and painful to see him "act". His controlling tiger mom, played by Shin Ae-ra, was overacting and was unsympathetic not because of her character, but her annoying portrayal.

However, some cast members were very good. Park Bo-gum, playing the protagonist Sa Hye-jun, was a strong male lead and brought his character really to life. The family of Sa Hye-jun was the highlight of the drama. Special praise in particular for his funny brother played by Lee Jae-won and the touching scenes with the grandfather.

The mixed performance of the cast could be overlooked if the story was well written and the different plots believable and relatable. But you end up confused, not understanding the morale of the story, and empty-minded. Record of Youth is a record of disappointment.

  • Heartwarming and heartbreaking, absolutely recommended

Hospital Playlist has been written by the same writer who wrote "Reply 1988", Lee Woo-jung. The producer is also the same, Shin Won-ho. The work that this combination creates is absolutely fantastic. Hospital Playlist shares a lot of the same vibe of "Reply 1988".

Hospital Playlist does not have a central storyline. Instead, we see the storylines of the 5 main characters, who are all medical doctors in the same hospital, friends, and also musical band mates. There are plenty of smaller subplots that stretch out over multiple episodes, be sure not to miss those. And do not miss the easter eggs or cameos that the creators added that refer to "Reply 1988". This TV drama requires some attention span in the beginning, but once you are suck in their worlds, you will share their heartwarming joy and heartbreaking tears.

Like Reply 1988, we have a group of 5 friends: 4 guys, 1 girl. We get a look in their lives. It is very realistic and funny. All the cast is sublime and excellent. They bring their characters to life in such a wonderful way. Each episode you get a very welcome musical intermezzo near the end when the 5 friends come together to play a song live as a band. The songs they play are older Korean power ballads with strong lyrics that capture perfectly the main feeling of each episode. And there is a running gag of the female neurosurgeon Chae Song-hwa, played wonderfully by Jeon Mi-do, who is tone deaf and does not have a feeling of rhythm, but still wants to be a vocalist. It makes you smile from ear to ear.

I absolutely enjoyed Hospital Playlist, season 1. It is such a wonderful TV drama that is heartwarming and heartbreaking. You get to laugh and to cry. Definitely recommended, get started and watch it!

  • An absolute gem to watch

After Parasite winning the Oscars, I became curious in other film and TV works from Korea. I watched Reply 1988 and it opened a whole new world to me. I have never seen a TV show like this. It was absolutely amazing how well the storylines are written and the characters are developing each episode.

The cast is top notch. They blend drama, romance and comedy perfectly. The older experience cast gave the story richness. The younger cast did an amazing job and the chemistry was real. This is what real friendship looks like. Their coming-of-age story lines are touching and entertaining.

The show is much more than the often discussed love triangle. It shows love in a much broader and deeper way between friends, parents, siblings and family.

The story has a lot depth. It has references to actual events happening at the end of the 80s, like the Seoul Olympics and the pro-democracy protests. It captures that zeitgeist perfectly. I did not understand all the cultural references to pop culture around that time, but I could certainly appreciate it.

Reply 1988 is Korean, but at the same time it tells a universal story in a unique and brilliant way. Therefore, it transcends different cultures. It will actually teach you valuable life lessons. And that makes this show an absolute gem to watch.
