I gave this episode a 5 star rating, even though it deserved a zero. The regular cast members did their best to save this episode from the terrible acting of Jason Alexander. That was proven beyond a shadow of a doubt, in this weak entry of an otherwise great TV series. Alexander is neither a good actor or a good comedian. Whoever thought of hiring Alexander to play a genius psychotic villain should have been fired. Alexander came across like he was pretending to act in a sixth-grade play. He wasn't scary, intimidating, or diabolical. There have been several other miscast villains in episodes over the years. However, Jason Alexander as Professor Rothchild, will go down as one of the worst acting jobs EVER in a TV series.
After watching the first season of Dark Winds. I thought it was a promising series with a bright future. It had an original storyline, good dialogue, realistic acting, good directing, and great cinematography. Most importantly, it was entertaining. Season 2 was mostly disappointing. The episodes were slow to unwind and not entertaining whatsoever. Season 3 was going gangbusters until Episode 6. I thought the writers had been smoking peyote, popping LSD, or maybe sniffing glue. Perhaps ingesting all three. It was so bad, I lost interest in the series and still haven't seen Episodes 7 and 8. Reminds me of the closing episodes of Better Call Saul. A total letdown. Maybe Dark Winds will bounce back for me. Right now, there are better shows to watch and things to do.
When Chuck Conners took the role of Lucas McCain on the Rifleman. He knew immediately, he would have to give life to a special character not seen before on TV. Conners was well aware, if he didn't focus on creating his character, he'd be searching for a new job pretty quick. Of course, Conners built his character based on his own persona, first and foremost. A guy born and raised in Brooklyn NY. He threw in, a bit of John Wayne, James Arness and Gregory Peck, for good measure. After all, Lucas McCain was a father, a rancher, a Civil War hero and an expert rifleman. Also, someone with a soft spot for troubled societal castoffs. It has always been fun to watch Chuck Conners interact with Johnny Crawford. Outside of Gunsmoke, The Virginian, Bonanza and maybe Have Gun, Will Travel, The Rifleman was one of the quintessential westerns of 1950's US television. And it still entertains today.
