Alan alda, towards the middle of his run on the very successful series MASH. With some other big co-stars... barbara harris, meryl streep, melvyn douglas. Senator tynan spends a lot of late nights working with someone who is helping in his political career. And this leads to an affair. Which will complicate things if it's discovered, since he's basing his offense and speeches on having a squeaky clean reputation. His relatonships with his wife and kids are already suffering, since he's away so often. When opportunities come his way, he'll have to make choices. Even he isn't sure what he wants. It's good! Directed by jerry schatzberg. I had seen his needle park and scarecrow, which were both pretty good. Script by... alan alda. Who had written a bunch of the mash episodes. And four seasons, which is also about couples, marriages, relationships. Alda's dad had a long career in hollywood, and had played gershwin in rhapsody.
In the united states, it's goodbye dragon inn. In tapei, it's bu san, which roughly translates to "not dispersed". I think.
When an old theater in taipei is scheduled to be closed down, various people come to attend the last showing. Some of the men appear to be there cruising for other men. Lots of dark hallways in that old theater! There's the disabled female employee, who seems to have no trouble climbing ladders and getting around. And the projectionist has disappeared! Is he one of the gay guys walking the halls? And of course, the annoying woman, who keeps splitting open shells with her teeth. Lots of long pauses, as we hear the film being shown in the background. In chinese. Some of which is translated for us. Very few words spoken between the theater patrons. Written and directed by tsai ming liang. This one is for the patient viewer. Not a lot of action going on. It's more of a thinker, film for our emotions and feeling of loss. Some fun bits in the trivia section: the movie shown on the screen is "dragon inn" from 1967, and two of the actors from that film appear in this more recent ode to movie theaters and participants. Good stuff, if you have the patience!

Really interesting documentary. Canadian filmmaker pat rocco finds his way to hollywood.... starts out making softcore films. In harvey milk's orbit, he's in the right place to document police activity at the club "the meat market". Later making softcore films with a gay, romantic story. They not only have a backstory, but it's almost a magical romance in very ordinary places. He actually filmed a gay love story at disneyland, which they did not approve, and of course, placed a cease and desist order. Nude men in some of his films, (probably not at disney), frolicking, actually kissing, dancing. And sadly, at the end, the two men would have return to the harsh real world full of rules and police. Includes interviews with rocco, his partner, by charlie david, a director and actor in his own right. Very well done! It was fun learning about a guy that most of us had probably never heard of. He not only filmed gay parades and events, but had a hand in organizing them. And has become part of history himself.
