hmm, i thought this movie was brilliant. i didn't think it was too long. i have a bootlegged copy that said it was an hour and a half, and i didn't even notice it was twice that. whatever it was a comment on, i don't pretend to know. and i don't understand how it was a comment on america, and not everyone in the world. aside from that, i thought everything worked about it, the minimal props on the black stage, the acting was great. what was so great that is so rare i think, is that all the motivations and scenario are so well thought out that it could play out logically and predictable, like an endgame, but they don't, and that contrast is where you face the authors message about human nature. the end is very satisfying too. go rent this and eyes wide shut, have everyone over, and have a good ol'time.
Let me tell you a little about art. Art tells you about yourself. When you react negatively and declare that a movie is garbage this says something about your aesthetics. It is one of the grandest illusions there ever was to blame someone or something else for your own reaction. That is what hell is: you torturing yourself. The intention of the artist is so often attacked, as if the man really just picked up a piece of trash and called it 'art'. Art is not a conscious conclusion. And if it is your interpretation that it is a piece of trash labeled 'art', then you must think art is exactly what it is not, a cold rational fact. As if it were a crime to find beauty in anything and everything there is. And as if there should be a rational reason for it to be such. Give yourself a break and allow yourself to experience something other than your cold hard rationality. Reason is predictable. The fun of the game is that don't know the outcome.
This film will one day be recognized as a classic. It is cinematic magic from beginning to end. Who cares what it is about and whether it is dark (and what film doesn't have a dark element, there is a nasty trend where we are supposed to keep the darker impulses from the wee ones, as if ignorance is wisdom), it is wonderful to look at, the acting is amazing, the animals are perfectly on cue, the action sequences are brilliant. It is a lovely and colorful dream, that yes might be a bit fantastical. So what? Imagine what a difference a movie set must be when it is predominantly animals in the movie.
