Georges Duroy is a social climber , irresistible to every woman who happens to cross his path. The more he gets (in terms of money, women and prestige,) the more he desires. "Bel-Ami" was OK, but it neither lived up to my expectations nor stood comparison with the 1930s Willi Forst version . Mostly because I kept waiting for the main character's comeuppance, which never actually came. Not only does the bad guy win here, but other men seem to celebrate his behaviors, while the women are too dumb to see through anything.
Nothing about Pérez is conventional - excepy the ending involving hijacking, guns and a live human body in a trunk. The baseline is a drama of criminality and redemption, but then there's an undercurrent of Almodóvarian humor along with melodrama, noir, social realism, telenovela camp and suspense eventually touched by tragedy. It's clever, earnest, ridiculous, knowing, forceful and totally bonkers. It's hard to believe, btw. Perez touches various genres - musical, crime thriller, soap opera - nothing is treated as a gag despite the inherent zaniness.
It is a fine short based on a Julio Cortázar story. I was hoping for something along the lines of Rabelais' Pantagruel, as this is also something of a humorist's creation than anything else. But no. It's more like Francis Ponge, if you like thought-provoking, outsider prose poems, or like Isadore Ducasse, if you want absurd, poetic short stories.
