The film adds up to a lot of bad ideas and very few good ones, wandering around Roth's footsteps in search of purpose.

Scene for scene, line for line, gag for gag, it’s basically the same movie. And the original was no masterpiece to begin with.

Travis Zariwny detachedly regards the material as shtick to be waded through with quotation marks.

It doesn't help that what passes for acting here seems more like a table read.

Zariwny's conflicted retread is both too harsh and too judgmental.

Who benefits from the existence of this film? Certainly not the largely bland ensemble of post-adolescent actors cast as the leads, who here can scarcely be called characters. Possibly the day players essaying those stock grotesques, who retain the air of being hungry for work.

Lack of originality feels like a fairly meaningless complaint when Roth’s film was derivative enough to begin with.
