... but I have to say this was a pretty good movie.
Part of me wonders if I would've said that 5 years ago.
Things have gotten so agenda-driven at the big H that I'm happy when the movie has a plot, some humor, some pathos, good performances, and the tried and true Hallmark plot devices (except I've noticed they're not doing as much of the ALMOST smooch anymore), and don't hit me over the head with something.
So Paul Campbell and Erin Cahill are to be commended for a nice job. I really like Jess Brown, too. She's a perfect best pal/sister type, and she may be doing leads one day too.
Seven.

I am not all that familiar with Hallmark romances. I've seen a few over the years and they seem to be harmless fun. However, one bit of advice I have about this one...use a pay service to see it without commercials instead of watching it for free on Philo. Why? Well, the channel puts more and longer commercials in the movie the more you watch it...and later, I noticed several five minute commercial breaks spread about ten minutes apart. And, towards the end, the commercial breaks were six minutes long!! Now I do NOT blame the people who made the movie...they can't help that the film was shown this way. But just don't see it with commercials on Philo...seriously.
The story stars a pretty 40-ish lady who has no family and whose only ambition is buying this one piece of property. So, when her aunt dies and leaves her 50% interest in a cat cafe, she just wants to sell it as soon as she can in order to buy her dream business. But, of course, the other co-owner is a sweet, hunky vet who is her opposite...instead of a workaholic, he's a 'helpaholic'...always helping others at the expense of having a life himself. Can the two manage to fall in love by the end of the movie? What do you think?
Predictable? Yes. But also very enjoyable and cozy...sort of like a Harlequin romance in movie form. While I would not like a steady diet of this, it's a nice holiday film and even if you aren't a Hallmark fan, it's an enjoyable film with the expected quality of acting and settings.

Granted, as I sat down to watch director Lucie Guest's 2025 Christmas movie here, and with it being a romantic drama, I have to admit that I figured that I would be in for something formulaic. But I still opted to watch the movie, on account of it being a movie that I hadn't already seen, nor actually ever heard about. And truth be told, then at least one Christmas movie, formulaic or generic or not, should be watched every holiday season.
The storyline in the movie was good. Sure, it was predictable, generic and formulaic, but writers Tracy Andreen and Elena Valdez actually managed to pull it off nicely enough regardless. And I will say that I found the narrative to be enjoyable.
I was actually not familiar with a single actor or actress on the cast list. But I will say that leading actress Erin Cahill and leading actor Paul Campbell certainly carried the movie nicely, and they had good on-screen chemistry. The acting performances in the movie were good.
If you enjoy sappy and formulaic Christmas movies, then "Christmas at the Catnip Café" is definitely well-worth sitting down to watch. Sure, this is not going to become a Christmas classic, but it is a fair enough movie nonetheless.
My rating of director Lucie Guest's 2025 "Christmas at the Catnip Café" lands on a six out of ten stars.

Let's just admit it-there was no way for this one to fail. I mean, cats. Everybody loves cats. And this movie has, like, a whole café of them. There's even that grumpy cat (not to be confused with the famous Tardar Sauce who had her own movie), who's extremely adorable. What's funny here is that the actual movie is barely trying. It's one of the laziest attempts this year. You know how it is: a young lady inherits the cat café and wants to sell it. But there's that young gentleman. You can tell exactly how it'll end without watching. No unique twists or interesting developments whatsoever-just our usual Hallmark train.
But let's be honest, if you don't quit after the Hallmark logo appears on screen, you know exactly why you are here. And like I said, there was no way for this movie to fail. The cats are there, the heartwarming aftertaste is there, and there's even a Tiny Tim-like character to add to the mood. So, at the end of the day, my biggest concern is that the chemistry between the two leads can be better. I mean, they're fine, but the writing doesn't contribute to the feeling, while the actors are acting like they're just doing their job. There's no spark.
What shocked me the most, though, is how terrible the post-production is. There are scenes, for example, with a shockingly different amount of grain. Things like that should be corrected during the post-production, but it looks like people behind this movie were like, "Nah! Why bother!" And it's not like it's a pro thing or something; it's close to impossible not to notice. It doesn't feel good. So, with not enough spark and terrible post-production? I think I'll rate it a bit lower than "a strong Hallmark movie," which, in my book, is seven (and eight being perfect by Hallmark Christmas standards). But if in your book six is too low and can make you reconsider, don't. Christmas at the Catnip Café is totally skippable, but a fine candidate for a Hallmark Christmas marathon.

Olivia Pierce (Erin Cahill) is a marketing executive who is close to finalizing her plan of purchasing her dream condo, but she's a bit short on the down payment. She learns that her Great Aunt has passed away and left her half of a cat café, she thinks it's the Christmas miracle she needed, she plans to sell the cafe and use that money to purchase the dream condo! However, Dr. Ben Kane (Paul Campbell), the veterinarian who owns the other half, has no intention of selling! The café serves an important role in the town and also helps homeless cats find forever homes. He realizes he can only stall Olivia for so long before she can legally force him to sell, so he comes up with a plan that hopefully will change her mind and heart. Olivia agrees to be in charge and continue with her Great Aunt's Christmas traditions and festivities involving the cafe and cats, and Ben agrees to sell after all the festivities take place. The movie takes both Olivia and Ben on a journey which makes them reflect on what really matters in life.
Erin Cahill is perfect in the role of Olivia, and she has terrific chemistry with Paul Campbell. Paul Campbell always brings a likeable, charismatic, humorous and witty style to his roles, as well as conveying his character's deep emotions. He is flawless in his portrayal of Ben. The story might be predictable, but the acting and sharp dialog keep you interested and engaged. Then of course there's THE CATS that steal your heart if your a feline fancier like me! There is also a good supporting cast too. An enjoyable, sweet and charming movie--four paws up!
