A brief history of Arjen Lubach's TV shows:
Zondag met Lubach was a fantastic show. The combination of satire and actual relevant content was spot on. Most jokes were actually funny.
Then, De Avondshow met Arjen Lubach started. The return of Lubach on television, and even daily? Wow, that should be great! Unfortunately, the show disappointed me. Admittedly, there were some good items, some good jokes, some good interviews. But the content was more shallow. The humour wasn't as profound, as sophisticated as before. The rigid format of the show didn't help either: the same rubrics each and every week. Weird 'intermezzo' rubrics to cut from Arjen Lubach standing to him sitting at the desk, which weren't funny half the time. Nonetheless, I still enjoyed De Avondshow every so often. A good way to have a laugh about what's going on in the world, perhaps.
And along came LUBACH, now on RTL. The format is virtually the same as De Avondshow. Arjen Lubach first spends a couple of minutes making half-assed jokes about news items of the current or previous day. He then addresses one or two topics, before continuing to a guest or some item about sports. The interviews with guests have been quite disappointing, sadly. It feels rushed, because it is. Perhaps the audience should spend less time clapping for an uncomfortable amount of time (seriously, it's getting weird - even Lubach himself responds to it in an awkward manner). Anyways, the interviews have little depth - unless the guest decides to take matters into their own hands (looking at you, Stephen Fry). The dry humour in the sports section has lost its charm, yet it keeps reappearing. And then the stand-up comedy. Would you like to experience what second-hand embarrassment feels like? Watch the episode with Stefan Pop. His routine was dreadfully unamusing. I can't say Micky Overman's performance was equally lacking, yet I can't say I enjoyed it either.
I think the daily format makes it nigh impossible for Lubach and his team to put on a show of consistently good quality. I wanted to give this show a chance, I really did. A chance for Lubach to redeem himself after his last show. Needless to say, I was disappointed. It's shocking how LUBACH averages a score of 7.5 (at the time of this review; based on 10 ratings). Are we watching the same show? Have people not seen Zondag met Lubach and noticed the decline in quality? Is there nothing better on television? Why is Lubach still being 'hyped' by so many people? Give praise where praise is due. We shouldn't rate LUBACH based on his reputation.
In conclusion: LUBACH absolutely pales in comparison to Arjen Lubach's previous shows, especially compared to Zondag met Lubach. Watching all episodes is not worth your time. Do you happen to be in front of your television with nothing interesting on other channels? And do you want some occasionally witty, though mostly shallow content? Consider watching LUBACH. If not, spend your time on something else. You're worth it.
