Turtletastic!

I recently viewed the first 2 episodes of the series. This show is more than what it presents on the surface. We see characters tackling profound philosophical themes; suicidal ideation, economic structures outside of capitalism, and existential dread.

Costume design and hair are eye catching, cohesive across the board.

ROCK SOLID SOUNDTRACK!

Im challenged as a viewer by one of the main characters of the show being a plushy. The writing, stage direction, filmography, and voice over are bold in the way they tackle this challenge. In some ways they are successful, at other times, the constraints of the cast and crew are noticeable.

Watching these episodes evokes a gentle breeze of nostalgia for my freshmen year of college. There is a queer, earnest, sexy, early-YouTube flare throughout the show, holding my interest, and leaving me wanting more. I look forward to the rest of the series.

Starting with a ridiculous premise (talking stuffed turtle) the dialogue is so smart, accurate, and economically witty, it draws you in effortlessly. The editing is extremely clever- it feels much higher budget- but minus any slick artifice. I don't want to give too much away- the trailer is a decent indication-but doesn't capture the nuance, the heart beneath the silliness.

It has the ideal balance of quirky plot, awkward characters negotiating life, the most reliable unreliable guide (yes, the turtle) you could ask for- and contains all the micro-movements in relationships that a lot of comedy is too broad-stroke to reveal.

A surprising and genuine delight- not unlike the feeling of such risk-taking comedies as "Chewing Gum" or "Atypical".

It's 15 minute episode form is compact and ideal.
