Prime Video seems to have cornered the dad market, with franchises such as Reacher and The Terminal List having recently expanded. This comes after a decade of success with shows such as Jack Ryan and Bosch, which paved the way for the streaming industry in many ways. This week saw the debut of The Terminal List: Dark Wolf, a spin-off to the blockbuster 2022 series The Terminal List. The new show serves as a prequel to the original and centers around the character played by Taylor Kitsch. Meanwhile, Chris Prattappears in a supporting role, mainly to satiate fans who've been waiting for him to return with a second season of the mothership show.

Prime Video’s Bosch spinoff Ballard is one step closer to a Season 2 renewal after the California Film Commission recently awarded the series a $14.84 million tax credit. According to Deadline, TV studios typically submit projects for tax incentives that they believe in, which either have already received a pickup or are on the verge of one. Ballard, which is set in Los Angeles, was put forward for the tax credit following strong ratings and reviews for its first season, which premiered on July 9, 2025. On Wednesday (August 27), the California Film Commission announced 22 productions that would receive a total of $256 million in state tax credits. In addition to Ballard, this included Apple...

A slew of Asian American-led TV series and films are dominating the summer airwaves, even as studios dismantle many of their diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, raising questions about their ongoing commitment to representing the real world on both the big and small screens.
Look no further than the trio of shows currently leading Prime Video’s Top 10 TV list: the Maggie Q-led Ballard, Butterfly, starring Daniel Dae Kim, and the YA hit The Summer I Turned Pretty, created by Jenny Han and starring Lola Tung.
Per Nielsen’s most recent Media Distributor Gauge report, Amazon captured 3.9% of all TV viewing in July thanks to the early success of both Ballard and The Summer I Turned Pretty. The Bosch spinoff, which debuted on July 9, generated 2.5B minutes viewed in the U.

Yes, “The Studio” is returning for a second season, this time with $13 million in support from the state of California.
The Apple TV+ show was one of 22 productions awarded a total of $256 million in state tax credits on Wednesday. This is the first allocation since the state expanded its filming incentive to $750 million overall in June — triggering a surge of interest from the studios.
According to the California Film Commission, applications leaped nearly 400% compared to the prior round for TV shows. Perhaps more noteworthy, no qualified projects were turned away.
“The Studio” is among the first to qualify under new eligibility rules that allow credits to go to half-hour shows. In the past, TV shows had to have episodes of at least 40 minutes to qualify — with exceptions for shows like “Veep” that were relocating from other states.

YouTube pulled in more viewership than any streaming service during the month of July, according to Nielsen’s monthly Gauge report. This the the sixth month in a row that the free video-sharing site has come out on top of Nielsen’s ranking, this time achieving 13.4% of all TV viewing.
That total is doubly impressive in the context of the platform’s overall reach. Nielsen only measures viewership on television screens, but YouTube meets a sizable portion of its audience on mobile devices — presumably more so than companies like Netflix and Disney — so its true proportion of streaming viewership is likely even higher.
Ranking at No. 2 after YouTube was Disney. Across its two streamers, Hulu and Disney+ (which will be combined into one app next year), Disney accounted for 9.4% of TV viewership in July. Per Nielsen, the four-point difference between YouTube and Disney is the largest lead a media company...

Prime Video may have just found its next crime-drama juggernaut. One month after its debut, Ballard — the Bosch spin-off starring Maggie Q — has officially overtaken Reacher on the streamer’s U.S. Top 10 chart, proving that fans are more than ready for a new lead detective. With Bosch: Legacy wrapping after three seasons, Prime Video needed a new centerpiece for author Michael Connelly’s LA crime universe. Enter Renée Ballard, a character known to book readers who has now taken center stage in her own series. Unlike Bosch, Ballard isn’t rogue — but she’s just as relentless.

For a certain group, there is nobody out there quite like Harry Bosch. The brainchild of author Michael Connelly, Detective Hieronymus "Harry" Bosch made his debut in 1922 in the pages of "The Black Echo" and, before long, became a staple of bookstores all around the world. While Connelly has written quite a few other novels, including the "Lincoln Lawyer" series, the lion's share of the astounding 89 million books (and counting) he's sold center on Mr. Bosch.
"I was a journalist for 14 years, and I covered the police. I was smart enough to say, 'This is what I have that maybe other writers don't have,' so I'd be a fool not to use that authenticity in my book," Connelly explained to the Associated Press in 2023. "So, Harry Bosch started out as a cop, and he was an outsider."

Billy Bob Thornton returned to the spotlight last year thanks to his performance in Taylor Sheridan’s Landman, but long before he ever played Tommy Norris, he starred in a legal drama that’s returned to streaming charts nearly 10 years after its premiere. Thornton stars alongside William Hurt (Lost in Space) and Nina Arianda (Midnight in Paris) in Goliath, the series following a disgraced lawyer who is now an ambulance chaser who gets a case that could bring him redemption and revenge. All four seasons of Goliath are still streaming on Prime Video, and the show has returned to the top 10 in the Czech Republic and several other countries. The final season of Goliath earned a 100% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and the show as a whole holds a 70% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter.
Goliath drew comparisons to Titus Welliver’s Bosch upon its release, largely due to the crime/legal drama aspects of the series.

A deep dive into Prime Video’s biggest strengths, where it still needs work, and why it’s hard to beat as part of Amazon Prime.
When I think of Prime Video, I think of the big-budget original series that I love, like “Fallout,” “The Boys,” and “The Wheel of Time.” But once I zoom it and take a look at Prime Video’s TV library as a whole, it strikes me just how much is actually here. Big action hits? Check. Prestige dramas? Yep. Teen romances, international dramas, classic TV shows? All of it. Prime Video doesn’t really stick to one lane — and that’s kind of the point. It’s built to be an “everything” service, with a deep catalog that kind of mashes up everything. And then I remember it’s included with my paid Amazon Prime membership, and it becomes one of the best all-around deals in streaming.

Hightownis having a surprise moment in the spotlight. The forgotten crime drama has climbed up to #4 on Netflix’s Top 10 in the United States as of July 29, per FlixPatrol, leaving behind some pretty big titles, including Squid Game, which released a new (and final) season just last month, and even The Sandman, which finally dropped its highly anticipated second season on July 24.
What’s even more surprising is that Hightown isn’t brand new. The series wrapped up its final season back in 2024 and quietly faded from the spotlight. It only just landed on Netflix on July 23, and thanks to the platform’s massive reach, a prime spot on the homepage, and growing word-of-mouth buzz, Hightown has quickly climbed the charts and found a whole new audience. The series follows Jackie Quiñones (Monica Raymund), a federal agent with the National Marine Fisheries Service who’s struggling with drug and alcohol addiction.

Bosch was a major hit for Prime Video, and the spinoff series Ballard,is already leaving its mark when it comes to viewership, upping the likelihood of receiving a season 2. Lasting for 7 seasons between 2014 and 2021, Bosch was one of Prime Video's most successful shows, becoming the streamer's longest-running original series.

Based on May Cobb’s thriller of the same name, “The Hunting Wives” catapults viewers into the messy, secret-filled world of East Texas.
Netflix‘s soapy new mystery stars Brittany Snow as Sophie O’Neill, a Bostonian housewife and former political PR rep. After moving to Maple Brook for her husband’s job, Sophie molds herself to fit in with the rich society women of the Texas town, ditching her sobriety, going to church and even hitting the shooting range to be included in the group.

The Prime Video police procedural series Ballard got off to a hot start, and one of the stars has indicated this suggests hopeful news for Ballard season 2. Ballard, a spinoff of the Bosch franchise, premiered on July 9, 2025, and the series has a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, though it left some story threads open-ended.
Fortunately, one of the stars of the series has hinted that season 2 may be a reality, and then we should get an answer to some of those burning questions from Ballard season 1. ScreenRant's Grant Hermanns interviewed Courtney Taylor, who plays Zamira Parker, a former LAPD officer who joins Ballard's (Maggie Q) Cold Case Unit.
Taylor discussed with Hermanns and ScreenRant her thoughts about Ballard's high Rt score and its pole position on Amazon Prime viewing charts (via FlixPatrol). Taylor said,
"I think they're just excited. I think everybody's just really excited about it still being No.

Netflix is on quite a hot streak this summer. The platform released a slew of titles that have shot to the top, maintaining its No. 1 position in the Samba TV Wrap report for seven consecutive weeks.
The thriller mini-series “Untamed” is the latest Netflix title to debut at the top of our chart, thanks to 2.4 million households that watched the first episode in the four days following its release on July 17. Eric Bana stars as an investigator from the National Parks Service who is sent to investigate after a body is discovered in Yosemite National Park.

Bosch fans were worried about what they would watch now that the Titus Welliver-led series has ended, but Ballard has very quickly become a go-to replacement series on Prime Video. The new series starring Maggie Q as Detective Renée Ballard, with Welliver guest-starring as Harry Bosch, has led the Prime Video chart since its debut two weeks ago after earning a perfect Rotten Tomatoes critic score and a solid 78% from audiences. Someone who is really pleased about that is star Courtney Taylor.
In Ballard, Taylor plays Samira Parker, and while she knew that everyone making the series loved it – including Welliver – having critics and audiences feel the same has made it so much better. She told ScreenRant:
“I'm literally on cloud nine. I could not have imagined a better reaction from all of the Bosch fans, all of the Michael Connolly fans, and even the new fans that are coming out.

Titus Welliver, who led the Bosch franchise for seven years, is now part of another series that is dominating the streaming charts. Welliver has been active in Hollywood since 1990, but it took him ample time to gain prominence within the industry. Despite appearing in many movies and TV shows, he was not as well known earlier in his career.
Brooklyn South was the first show where he had true recognition, playing Officer Jake Lowery for a full season. From there, he would continue to strive for recurring roles, and he would find them in Deadwood, That's Life, Sons of Anarchy, and The Good Wife. Finally, in 2014, Welliver found a show that was perfectly suited for him: Bosch.

Amazon's Prime Video has carved quite a niche for itself as the premiere outlet for what I affectionately call "Dad TV." These shows take place in a world of square-jawed, broad-shouldered dudes who aren't afraid to get their hands dirty to do what needs to be done. No one, and I mean no one, better captures this specific genre of TV than Hieronymus "Harry" Bosch. Starring the gruff "Deadwood" and "Lost" alum Titus Welliver, the series had a healthy seven season run on Prime Video, which is a rare accomplishment these days where streaming shows are lucky to get even two seasons.
Premiering in 2014, "Bosch" adapted a series of novels by "The Lincoln Lawyer" author Michael Connelly with hard boiled titles like "City of Bones" and "The Concrete Blonde." The series aired its final episode in 2020, but that didn't mean Amazon was getting out of the Bosch business. They almost...

It looks like a famous Star Trek alum is about to beam on board a popular crime drama in a mystery role!
Star Trek actors have often done well avoiding being typecast outside of the franchise. William Shatner struggled for years to escape the shadow of Kirk but succeeded with T.J. Hooker and Boston Legal. Other actors have done well with non-Trek roles, and while still connected to the franchise, stand on their own.
One of the best examples is Jeri Ryan. Before Star Trek: Voyager, her biggest role was on the short-lived NBC sci-fi drama Dark Skies. It was her turn as Seven of Nine that boosted Ryan to fame, and her portrayal of the former Borg made her an instant sci-fi fan favorite.
Since Voyager ended, Ryan has stayed busy on TV. She’s had roles on Boston Public, Shark, Body of Proof, Leverage, and Bosch, along with numerous guest star roles.

We’re in the thick of summer, with many Americans traveling to far-off locales to kick back and relax a little bit. More than a few are likely hitting the road to attend a wedding, which is the subject matter of this week’s most-watched streaming program: “Madea’s Destination Wedding.”

Actor Titus Welliver is known for playing Hieronymus “Harry” Bosch in the shows Bosch and Bosch: Legacy, but his new crime drama, which boasts a 100% Rt score, has an exciting season 2 filming update. Based on the Harry Bosch books by Michael Connelly, Prime Video’s Bosch is considered one of the best modern detective shows. A large part of that comes down to the compelling performance of Titus Welliver.
Even before Bosch, Welliver was known for acting in police dramas and crime shows. He acted in CSI, Sons of Anarchy, and Deadwood, to name a few. This made him the perfect choice to play Bosch in Prime Video’s original series. AcrossBosch and Bosch: Legacy’s nine seasons, Welliver and the writers made Harry Bosch a complex and morally fascinating character. Sadly, his time as the main character of a series came to an end withBosch: Legacy’s divisive finale.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Ballard Season 1’s series finale] Prime Video’s Ballard is a quirky outlier in the crime drama crowd. A spinoff of a spinoff, the crime thriller branches off from Bosch: Legacy, which itself originated from the original series Bosch. Both were highly successful streaming titles, yet both were ultimately canceled. Now, as Ballard launches forth and keeps the Bosch universe alive, the new series’ star Maggie Q is well aware of the unusual position she’s in. The show follows Detective Renée Ballard as she takes charge of the LAPD’s newly formed cold case division. A veteran officer recently demoted and disgraced through no fault of her own, Ballard must confront past trauma while fighting to regain the trust of her department—and herself. Her fall from grace began when she reported being assaulted by Detective Robert Olivas (Ricardo Chavira). Instead of receiving support, she was removed from the...

Matthew McConaughey's 83% Fresh Crime Film With a Secret Bosch Connection Is Blowing Up on Streaming
In 2011, Matthew McConaughey starred as Mickey Haller in The Lincoln Lawyer. As the legal crime movie finds new success on streaming, fans may be surprised to learn about the connection between Mickey Haller and the hit Prime Video series Bosch.
Both The Lincoln Lawyer and Bosch are based on best-selling novel series by writer Michael Connelly. However, the connection doesn't stop there, as Connelly's Mickey Haller and Harry Bosch book series take place in the same shared universe, with Haller and Bosch depicted as half-brothers. Unfortunately, due to the rights held by different studios, this familial connection has not yet been replicated on screen, which is unfortunate given how popular the Bosch Universe is on its own. As for The Lincoln Lawyer, while the movie was a modest box office hit, grossing $87 million worldwide, it's currently climbing the charts on Paramount+. The Bosch universe might have taken a brief interlude following the recent conclusion of Bosch: Legacy on Prime Video. However, Ballard, featuring Maggie Q in the titular leading role, is doing a commendable job of carrying the banner forward.
Ballard dropped all its episodes together on Prime Video on July 9. One can’t help but appreciate the connections that have tied the final season of Bosch: Legacy and Ballard together. In all fairness, it can be held that the third and final season of Bosch: Legacy consisted of two such episodes that served as staging grounds for what may transpire on the debut season of Ballard.
The third season of Bosch: Legacy once again brought the case of the Flower Girls to attention. An unexpected turn of events led to the introduction of Renee Ballard as the new officer working in conjunction with Harry to lead the case to its conclusion.

Bosch: Legacy may have reached its end, but the world of Harry Bosch is anything but finished. In fact, fans of the long-running Prime Video franchise are already embracing its next chapter — Ballard, the brand-new spin-off led by Maggie Q as Detective Renée Ballard, has shot straight to the top of the streaming charts, currently sitting at #1 on Prime Video. But while Ballard shares DNA with its predecessor, it isn’t simply Bosch 2.0 — and that’s exactly the point. Looking for a new crime show fix? “Ballard” is here for you. And the good news for those who don’t like waiting for new episodes each week, you don’t have to.
Taking place in the “Bosch” universe, “Ballard” centers on Detective Renée Ballard (Maggie Q) as she leads the LAPD’s new cold case division, which is, of course, underfunded as the cases have remained open for quite some time.

'The Lincoln Lawyer' Star, 44, Teases "A Lot of Maggie and Mickey" in Emotional Season 4 [Exclusive]
After being out of the picture for much of Season 3 of Netflix's The Lincoln Lawyer, Maggie McPherson is about to have a big role in what's being billed as the show's most personal yet. Neve Campbell was promoted to a series regular earlier this year when Season 4 was officially ordered, and it all but assured that the attorney would remain close by her ex-husband Mickey Haller's side as he fights the murder charges against him. It's the perfect time for a comeback, as Maggie has long been a fan favorite and an emotional anchor for Mickey, given the history the characters share. Series star Manuel García-Rulfo promises that their ever-evolving relationship will be front and center in the upcoming run, too.
In the wake of his recent role in Jurassic World Rebirth, García-Rulfo recently sat down with Collider's Christina Radish for a larger profile exploring his journey to stardom.
