Her Little Secret

A fair movie...

Given the movie's cover, I figured that I was in for another movie from Maverick Entertainment. And true enough, seeing that ethereal horse galloping across the screen as the movie started just proved my assumption to be true. But still, I opted to watch "Her Little Secret" and give it a fair chance, as it was movie that I had neither heard about or watched before. And there are the rare occasions where Maverick Entertainment actually spawns something watchable. Perhaps director Derrick Hammond's 2017 movie "Her Little Secret" was one such instance.

Writers Thomas Freeman Jr. And Zadia Ife put together an enjoyable and good storyline. And it was especially nice to see that, and it was a great step up from the usual crap that Maverick Entertainment is known for. The contents of the storyline and script here is profound and deep, whereas many other movies from Maverick Entertainment has been stereotypical "gangsta" rubbish.

I was not familiar with the cast ensemble in the movie, but I will say that they had a good cast ensemble and the acting performances were good. This was definitely a much welcomed thing from the usual shoddy and questionable acting performances seen in the majority of movies from Maverick Entertainment.

If you've sat through any of the questionable movies from Maverick Entertainment, then you will definitely enjoy "Her Little Secret", as it was a big step up both in production, storytelling, acting and in overall. And truth be told, it was actually an okay movie.

My rating of director Derrick Hammond's 2017 movie "Her Little Secret" lands on a five out of ten stars.

A cautionary tale that exceeded my expectations!

Definitely not a Hollywood big- budget blockbuster, which is extra incentive to watch for me. With surely a limited budget to work with, I was truly impressed with every facet of this film, a quality production throughout. The script, plot and dialog was believable, with explicit language, drug use, violence and sexuality used to create necessary realism, instead of being the main or only focus of the film. The difficult themes were, incredibly, very tastefully presented. The director stayed on course, without drifting all over or dragging the viewer through dull filler scenes. The plot, while not really new or unique, held my interest and was easy to follow without becoming confusing. I thought the acting was superb, totally believable, engaging, and professional. The actors seemed well-cast and were attractive, with appearances that were mostly excellently matched to their characters. The "crackhead" and violent criminal characters were perhaps a little too clean-cut, attractive and their teeth too white and cared for, but did make watching them more pleasant, if slightly less authentic. But not enough to detract from my enjoyment of the movie. The soundtrack and background music added positive dramatic emphasis, rather than being jarring, annoying or used to camouflage a weak script, direction or acting. The audio was excellent, and didn't overpower the dialog or make me grab the remote to lower or raise the volume, as is the case with so many movies, whether blockbuster or low- budget B. I liked that there was a clear moral to the story. I'm streaming this for the first time in 2023, I don't know anyone connected with the production of this movie, and am not personally in need of a cautionary tale, as I have two toddler grandchildren. I watch purely for entertainment and escapism, which I feel was provided, and recommend it, 7/10 stars.

It's rare that I don't finish watching a movie...

But in this case, I made an exception. It's not that it was particularly bad, it just wasn't that good. Mediocre acting, combined with so-so-writing, and a predictable storyline all added up to a big, fat nothing. I quit after 30 minutes or so. Don't waste your time with this one.

Mixed feelings

I felt the beginning of the movie started out strong, with a real feel of authenticity. The poor neighborhood, the drugs and easier to get a gun than a job. And Lerrez's parents were both crackheads. So she slipped in the world of pot and crime, especially after her being assaulted. The thing is the movie fast forwarded, and it seemed to lose a great deal of the gritty feeling the first half imparted. Probably because a movie showing reality would not 'sell'. So the actors were simply too perfect. Tats, but not the scars that one would expect from living, or have lived, in a rough and tumble neighborhood growing up. And the gun fire simply sounded fake. Lerrez did harbor a secret, and that came back hard in the third act when blackmail became part of the scene. It shows that no matter what, one cannot walk away from the past. So the producers probably faced a real problem. Show reality, and limit your market. Tone it down and spruce it up, and one loses the impact of their reality.
