A Clever Parody Of Hallmark Itself

This Hallmark holiday film is very meta: a gently self-mocking send-up of the formulaic Hallmark romances that concern the Christmas season. Good for Hallmark!

Emily (Maggie Lawson) is determined to achieve a "perfect" Christmas, using the five rules her mother gave her. Her family, however, has other plans, due to their focus on other personal issues, like a pressure-filled job (with a Scrooge-like boss), a desire to create music, and coping with peer pressure. Just when Emily is about to give up, she finds a star with an inscription that promises to fulfill a wish, and her life is visited by Sugar Plum, an iconic character on the Harmony Home Channel, which is a Hallmark-like television network.

Sugar Plum (Janel Parrish) is an excessively cheerful character with a Pollyannish outlook on life. Being a fictitious character, she has only known success, mostly by following her "Book of Rules". Hallmark viewers will recognize most of the rules; it's a clever, funny contrivance. Not surprisingly, Emily learns some lessons about relationships, ideals, and happiness.

Janel Parrish is perfect as Sugar Plum, embodying a fairy tale personality. She's one can-do gal. As the story develops, Maggie Lawson settles into her role, and the duo is great fun together.

Hallmark hits a homerun with this comedic tale that tweaks its own memes and plot conventions.

Delightfully fun

Something different for a change, a very fun and spirited movie. They Christmas rules and magic and essentially making fun of so many Christmas movies. Gently but definitively poking fun at Hallmark movies such a refreshing blast of lighthearted fun and sorely needed this time of year.

This movie will truly make you laugh and the actress who plays Sugar Plummed plays her part so well I have a new actress to look forward to in the future.

I hope they come up with more movies like this that they continue to keep from getting to serious about themselves all the time. A true breath of fresh air this Christmas season.

Actually Pretty funny

Ok. So I didn't know what to expect from this movie. But what I definitely didn't expect was for Hallmark to be this self-aware. It was funny and charming. Maggie Lawson was her usual amazing self and I loved the acting choices made by Janel Parrish, she gave her character real life and I love the vocal choices.

She made her seem just cartoonish enough without becoming annoying. But gave her a few layers that made her likeable and real.

The meta was especially hilarious. Hallmark knew exactly what they were doing. So major kudos to them for this delightfully silly and heartwarming movie. Would definitely watch again.

Delightful

As others mentioned, Sugarplummed parodies the general slate of Hallmark Christmas movies (and others, because many Hallmark romances throughout the year use the same tropes, just without the snow or decorations.

Here, the Christmas magic, which happens sometimes, is a hyper-competent and hyper-perky character coming out of a series of Christmas movies about a small town's Christmases. Janel Parrish's high-pitched voice is a BIT grating, but you'll get over that.

We've liked Maggie Lawson since Psych, so that gave us a bias toward the movie before it even started.

The gags used in the movie to accomplish Maggie's Christmas Wish List are fun, and follow along with the same sense of good-spirited send up of their movies over the years.

This one will be rewatchable. Recommended, and I didn't even have to finish the movie to give it the stars.

I loved Janel Parrish who played Sugarplum...she was infectious!

I loved the engaging positivity of Sugar Plum with her rules for the town of Perfection.

When stressed career woman, mother and wife Emily makes a wish to have one perfect Christmas that brings her family together...the fictional character and star of a series of Christmas movies named Sugar Plum shows up. Emily originally thinks she is loosing her mind until she discovers other people can see Sugar Plum, but they don't recognize her. Adopting the pseudonym Sue Garplum, she stays with Emily and her family trying to use the rules to help Emily complete her Christmas list in time for Christmas.

I loved the first 2/3 of this film. I thought the premise was fun and unique. It did devolve a bit at the end into a more traditional Hallmark holiday film, but then it was a quick trip to the happy ending. I think Hsllmark holiday film fans will appreciate the uniqueness and the infectious happiness of the sugar plum character.

Surprisingly good...

When I sat down to watch the 2024 movie "Sugarplummed", I have to admit that I wasn't really harboring the biggest of expectations to the movie, as the movie's cover was sort of plain and boring. But still, it was a Hallmark Christmas movie, and I hadn't already seen it, so of course I added it to my 2024 Christmas movie marathon.

And color me impressed. Writer and director Ryan Landels delivered quite a surprisingly nice and entertaining movie. I was genuinely entertained by the story in the movie, and it was a rather enjoyable Christmas movie to sit through. Sure, it was crammed with archetypical Hallmark Christmas formula, but it worked quite nicely.

The only face on the screen that I was familiar with was actress Janel Parrish, whom played Sugarplum. And she was phenomenally cast for the movie and put on a fantastic performance; she really brought a lot of charm and color to the movie. Actually, the entire cast in the movie put on good performances, but Janel Parrish really stood out quite remarkably.

If you enjoy sappy Christmas movies, then you definitely should sit down to watch "Sugarplummed". I was genuinely and wholeheartedly surprised and entertained by this movie.

Sure, the movie is not going to be a Christmas classic for me, but it is certainly a Christmas movie that I would warmly recommend you to sit down and watch.

I will go as far as to saying if you're only going to watch one Christmas movie this year, and if it isn't going to be "National Lampoons Christmas Vacation" or "The Muppet Christmas Carol", then "Sugarplummed" is a worthy contender.

My rating of writer and director Ryan Landels's 2024 movie "Sugarplummed" lands on a six out of ten stars.

There are rules

I am pretty sure this movie is what you call a parody. It is a Hallmark movie making fun of Hallmark Christmas movies. And the first thing you need to know is that there are rules. Sugarplum keeps sounding them off a little like Gibb's rules in NCIS but much more fun. Janel Parrish is like a Christmas fairy on steroids. Way overacted. But it works because it is supposed to be way too much.

Maggie Lawson's Emily is kind of a Christmas fairy wannabe, that is a Sugarplum wannabe. She has Christmas lists and aspirations but her family just isn't into it. There are Christmas movies where Emily would be put into the TV movie world of Perfection, but this movie switches that and Sugarplum from the movies appears in Emily's world and brings lots of fun chaos with her. The Christmas movie cliches come through like a tidal wave. Even my favorite Christmas movie cliche - a snowball fight.

The acting is what it needs to be where, or who, it needs to be. The dialogue is sizzling.

Something interesting to me is Rule 39. I've noticed it in countless movies but didn't realize it reached the status of a Christmas rule. The endless wardrobes in too small a bag.

Lest you think that Sugarplum's assertions that her rules only have positive outcomes, that changes. The movie even starts to get into real life family issues.

One of the last scenes is a musical performance of an original song by Kyra Leroux as Nina.

About priorities

7.2 stars.

While I don't fully share the super positive sentiments of most reviewers, I still see the point, and the theme, which is to get your priorities straight. This is a family film, there is no romance. If you are expecting any romance, 'Sugarplummed' is not the choice.

This is the story about a career driven mother/lawyer, who always wants to have the perfect Christmas. But her perfect Christmas is a perfectionist's fiasco.

As she begins to lose her grip on accomplishing her usual list of Christmas tasks (she never finishes her list, but this year she's dead-set on it). She makes a Christmas wish for her desires to become reality, but unfortunately, her desires of a perfectionistic Christmas are not aligned with fate and the universe.

She is granted her wish, partially, when she receives a fairy, a special Christmas magical visitor in the form of a beautiful and seemingly naive female (the usual formula), who comes right out of a Christmas movie.

Her agendas become the source of a chain of unfortunate events and she and the visitor need to fix the problem. Of course, the problem is her. Her character is flawed. She is an absentee mother.

We know the formula which dictates to the audience that her wish can't be fulfilled until she is transformed into a better person. Tale as old as time.

There is a very, very light touch of 'Mary Poppins' meets 'It's a Wonderful Life'. It's an enjoyable film just not one that I will rewatch often, thus the 7.2. Right on the cusp of my return-in-five-years list. I may watch it again in five, but I doubt it.

This is primarily a family movie, to be enjoyed by the less worldly, more innocent sort of conservative demographic (who doesn't have an issue with magic and fairies and such, even though it's metaphorical).

That pretty much explains it. If you like Christmas movies that teach a lesson about balance and not taking our loved ones for granted, this is for you.

2 Leading Ladies, Twice the Fun

This Hallmark holiday movie turned out to be one of its best, largely due to treating the audience to two watchable leading ladies, Maggie Lawson and Janel Parrish. Lawson is wonderful at playing busy, harried professional Emily, who longs to create the perfect Christmas for her family. Parrish is hilarious pure joy as Sugarplum, an over-the-top character who comes straight out of a Hallmark-type movie franchise and into Emily's life via a Christmas wish by Emily, of course. Sugarplum is there to help Emily achieve "the perfect Christmas," but will she be able to? It truly is most enjoyable to watch it for yourself to find out because it could go either way.

Lots to enjoy about this movie. I loved the basic premise of Hallmark poking fun at its holiday romcoms and all the usual tropes. There are unexpected, fun cameos by a few other fave Hallmark leads too, and I wish they had more. Rounding out the cast was Emily's family, all well cast and very capable. Nice to see the actor who portrayed her husband, Brendon Zub, in a more prominent role. The actress who portrayed her daughter has a terrific singing voice. This one is a must-see this holiday season.

it's Buddy from Elf

Emily (Maggie Lawson) is struggling to make a perfect Christmas like her late mother. Her husband and two teenage kids are not helpful. With her daughter eager to move far away for college, this may be her last chance. She makes a wish for a Sugarplum Christmas. Sugarplum is a series of TV movies where everything comes together. Sugarplum (Janel Parrish) shows up with her book of rules.

Hallmark tries to parody itself. The problem is that there is no such series to be found. Sugarplum is an insipid idea. It's not a parody if it is parodying something that doesn't exist. So I kept thinking and thinking and thinking. Oh! She's Buddy from Elf. There's no problem with copying from someone else and Elf is great copying material. This is not as fun, but it's enough.

Impossible Camp for Hallmark

I believe this to be the best Hallmark Christmas movie of 2024, maybe ever actually. The level of campiness and outrageousness while at the same time honoring the tropes of the holiday movie genre were impressively balanced. Sometimes, when Hallmark tries to be tongue in cheek, it can be cheesy but this one was hilarious, I was chuckling the whole time. I hope they make more movies like this, tons of interesting plot and emotional development for all the characters plus an ending that isn't rushed and scrambled in the last five minutes. And more Janel Parrish! She needs to be at Lacey Chabert level, I would love to see her lead more movies!

Delightful insight into the rules that make the movies we love

Hallmark has done some new things this year that deserve applause, but nothing more so than this not-so-tongue-in-cheek movie about the rules of Hallmark movies. I actually laughed out loud-at the spot on rules and wild results-so many times that I lost count. Sugarplummed is well-crafted and sure to be a favorite of Hallmark movie aficionados.

Happily married mother of two, Emily (Maggie Lawson) wants a perfect Christmas, but things aren't going according to her checklisted plan. Her family isn't exactly onboard with her version of the holiday. They are busy and have more important things on their minds. Thankfully Emily makes a wish on a magical Christmas tree star, bringing Sugarplum (Janel Parrish) to life-straight out of a Hallmark-type movie franchise where everything is perfect and follows very defined Christmas movie rules.

The rules (and I won't spoil them here) are the unique levity that seems like we're breaking the fourth wall and getting an inside look into the Hallmark-movie production factory where our favorites are cranked out each season. The rules about big time jobs, Christmas tree farms, small towns, high school loves, contests and so many other things are spot on and familiar, but charming nonetheless.

Sugarplum's use of the rules in the real world are a big hit, until they aren't. And that's where the lessons come from. This tale is really about lessons and learning to love what you have. Ironically, in a movie about Hallmark rules, there is no love story driving or dragging the action to conclusion. The movie is centered on Emily and her learning what it really means to have a perfect Christmas. She isn't meeting a new fella. She's married to Ben, who is just a hardworking husband who learns some lessons himself. It's refreshing to see that you don't need a 1+1 love story to tell a great Hallmark story. The family love was enough.

I think this just might be a Hallmark classic, because it didn't follow the formula, but seemed familiar all the same. Simply a joy to watch and highly recommended.

Cast Kudos: Janel Parrish as Sugarplum. She's a bit Mrs. Miracle, Mary Poppins and Buddy the Elf all rolled into one delightful package.

Measuring Christmas Magic: Oh, yeah. It was magic. Come for the snowglobe/ indoor snowball fight and stay for the ski lodge/condo story, or the jailbird songs.

Alternative movie titles: The Rules of Christmas Movies; Sugarplum saves Christmas; Sugarplum comes to Seattle.

A funny Hallmark movie that mocks Hallmark movies

I know people justifiably mock Hallmark Christmas movies but what about a Hallmark movie that mocks Hallmark movies? Sugarplummed is just that movie. It's funny and (unlike many of them) really smartly written.

Sugarplummed is about a mom that wishes for the perfect Christmas (which she always wishes for). But this time, Sugarplum, a character in a series of Christmas movies magically shows up to help the mom get her wish. She comes with a book of hard and fast rules like Flannel is a Natural Aphrodisiac and When a Big City Girl Meets a Small Town Bachelor, They're Guaranteed to Fall in Love and Get Married.

The kids are not perfect and they're not annoying. This time they're sarcastically funny. In what Hallmark movie does a kid walk in to the perfectly decorated room and say, "Why does it look like the North Pole threw up in here?"

I highly recommend this one!

Finally a fun magical 2024 Hallmark Christmas movie

Finally a fun, magical, and enjoyable 2024 Hallmark Christmas movie! Sugarplummed takes a tongue-in-cheek approach to all the common Christmas movie tropes from both the big and little screens. It pokes fun at other movies and at the same time laughs at itself, and by doing so makes this movie a lot of fun to watch. This story totally embraces the magic and whimsy of Christmas, it doesn't tip toe around the magical elements like some other Hallmark 2024 Christmas entries have. The actress who plays Sugarplum hit it out of the park with her performance. I have bee harsh in my reviews on the bulk of this year's Hallmark Christmas releases, but this one gets 10 stars from me!

Delightful!

Good, bad, or indifferent, I've watched every Hallmark movie that's been released in the last seven or eight years. This is one of the best.

I came for Maggie Lawson and stayed for Janel Parish. Maggie is a terrific actress and one of my favorites. Her delivery saves even the most cheesy lines because it sounds real.

Janel Parish was the prize. She played Sue Garplum like she was born for the role. I know her mainly from more serious shows so it was a treat and surprise to see her play such a delightful character. (I've never used that word out loud before, but it's the closest I can think of!) She was flipping adorable.

Well worth a watch!

What a Gem!

What a gem! Hallmark has another winner with Sugarplummed. This movie had a fantastic cast and the story flowed really well. Upbeat and filled with fun, Sugarplummed made us feel good and that's the whole point of a really good Christmas movie. Each cast member was natural and you felt like you were watching the character and not an actor in a role (hope that makes sense). They did a great job! And the setting and scenes were really well done and felt very Christmasy. Watch Sugarplummed and I'm confident you'll love and enjoy it as much as we did. I hope Hallmark makes more like this one, because it's a winner!

Sweet and Funny

I watched this because I really like Maggie Lawson and Janel Parrish. I'll say up front, the movie is not your typical rom-com. The story is fresh and unusual for Hallmark. The movie is about a women's (Maggie Lawson) desire for the perfect Christmas with family. She makes a wish and Sugarplum (Janel Parrish), a movie character appears to help. Sugarplum has rules and and expects everything to follow the rules, when it doesn't happen as planned, chaos occurs.

Sugarplum, aka Sue Gar Plum, is highly amusing. The movie was unexpected and hilarious.

I really enjoyed the added characters played by Victor Webster and Fiiona Gubelmann.

Surpassed non-existent expectations by a wide margin

My wife and I watch all the Hallmark Channel Countdown to Christmas movies every year. The ones we can't catch live, we record and watch later. This is one we watched after Christmas. I must admit I almost deleted it without watching it because I was burned out on the usual syrupy, poorly developed stories, but we decided to watch this one anyway. And boy, was I glad I did.

This was the most surprising movie of the year and one of the best. Janel Parrish was delightful. Her Sugar Plum character was funny, and Hallmark threw in just the right amount of self-deprecating humor to make it worth the watch. Hallmark spent a lot of effort this year in making fun of itself, but this was the only movie that understood how to do it. I laughed out loud many times. Will watch again.
