This is one of those films that stays with you for a while after the credits roll. It's a deeply emotional and beautifully crafted story about gay filmmakers in post-WWII Yugoslavia, fighting not only for their art but for their right to exist in a society that tried to silence them.
The story is bold and unapologetic, tackling heavy themes with heart and nuance. It's not just about oppression-it's about resilience, creativity, and the enduring power of art. The performances are outstanding, with every actor bringing raw emotion and authenticity to their roles. You really feel the weight of their struggles and the quiet moments of joy that keep them going.
The music, composed by Michael Brook and Ozren Glaser, is absolutely stunning. It perfectly captures the mood of the film, blending sadness and hope in a way that hits you right in the feels. The score feels like it's telling its own story alongside the characters.
Visually, the film is gorgeous. The black-and white cinematography uses muted tones and stark contrasts to reflect the oppressive environment, while the period details in the sets and costumes pull you completely into the world of the film.
All in all, Beautiful Evening, Beautiful Day is a powerful and moving film that deserves all the recognition it's getting. It's not just a history lesson-it's a reminder of why art and freedom of expression matter so much, even today.
This is a must-watch for anyone who loves bold, meaningful cinema.

Beautiful Evening, Beautiful Morning has a dense but well-achieved narrative. It discusses the LGBTQA+ prosecution in old Yugoslavia, which is still a current theme today. The raw images and emotions portrayed by a great cast and direction have a consistent rhythm that grip you to the screen. It is a well-deserved Official Oscar Submission for Best International Feature Film by Croatia. Totally recommend everyone to watch it and reflect on the impact of such conservative governments that promote opression rather than respectful expression - it is so on topic for US, European and worldwide audiences nowadays.
"Beautiful Day, Beautiful Night" is a film that highlights the eternal struggle of love for survival through a story set in post-war Yugoslavia. It is striking how, throughout history, regardless of the era, love always faces obstacles, defies norms, and fights for its right to exist.
Directior manages to shed light on delicate aspects of personal and collective freedom while prompting viewers to question how far societal boundaries go in trying to suppress diversity. Although the film faces criticism for historical inaccuracies, its core message remains clear - love is what, regardless of the time period or social order, never stops fighting for its place in the world.

One of my viewing suprises this year in the INTERNATIONAL OSCAR SUBMISSIONS is the truly superb Croatian entry, BEAUTIFUL EVENING, BEAUTIFUL DAY from director Ivona Juka. A film about a group of four film makers, who are best friends, war heros and gay, battle for freedom of speech, as well as their own freedoms in 1950's communist Yugoslavia. The film, scrumptiously shot in black and white, is raw, shocking and beautiful at the same time. Both Intense and emotionally gripping. Aligned with what is going on in the country now, you can see, through these characters, the hopes and dreams of many gay men being destroyed in the name of a corrupt and unjust system of government. I recommend you see this one.
This film is a compelling portrayal of resilience, friendship, and the courage to stand against oppression, set against the backdrop of post-WWII Yugoslavia. The narrative deftly combines the tension of a politically charged era with the intimate journey of four brave artists, Lovro, Nenad, Stevan, and Ivan, who face the harsh consequences of their beliefs and identities under the scrutiny of the regime. Each character is richly developed, and the nuanced performances bring authenticity to their struggles, showcasing the courage they embody as both fighters and artists.
The plot offers a unique perspective on censorship and propaganda through the character of Emir Servar, an agent whose transformation over the course of the film is both moving and thought-provoking. His journey from a rigid Party hardliner to a man torn between loyalty to the state and his newfound understanding of artists' power is beautifully captured. The film brilliantly balances Emir's internal conflict with the broader historical context, presenting a gripping story that resonates with universal themes of freedom, identity, and sacrifice.
Visually and emotionally powerful, this film stands as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. The scenes are meticulously crafted, and the cinematography brings out the stark reality of the era. The story's unexpected twists and the deepening relationships between the characters make it a deeply engaging watch, culminating in an unforgettable finale that speaks to the sacrifices made in the pursuit of truth.
In all, this film is not only a tribute to the artistic spirit but also a poignant reminder of the cost of standing up against injustice, making it a must-watch for anyone interested in historical dramas with heart and substance.
