Nice attempt

The core concept of Coherence with unnecessary songs and too much spoonfeeding after intentionally messing up the narrative because the makers aren't smart enough to actually make it as tight as Coherence. But the middle portion of the movie did feel compelling and keeping it more of a time loop would have worked better with respect to that portion because it clearly also got some inspiration from Timecrimes. It made the atmosphere of a proper horror movie in those portions. However, the unnecessary first act and the confused third act drag the movie down. The very end would've worked more if they had taken a different route in the middle. Nonetheless, it is a nice attempt at making a mind-bending movie within the realm of commercial Tamil films and the compelling middle portion of the movie makes it a worthwhile big screen watch.

A Mind-Bending Masterpiece: Black (2024)

Black (2024) isn't just a movie; it's a thrilling journey through time, love, and fate. This film takes us on a rollercoaster as a couple finds themselves trapped in a relentless loop, desperately seeking a way out while wrestling with the question of destiny and choices. Each loop reveals new layers of their past and future, pulling us deeper into their love, fears, and unresolved mysteries.

The direction is exceptional, blending intense emotions with stunning visuals that keep you guessing till the last second. The storytelling grips you, leaving you in awe as it explores the complexities of relationships within the boundless dimensions of time. Every moment is an edge-of-your-seat thrill, balancing suspense with profound emotional moments.

A must-watch for fans of psychological thrillers and time-travel mysteries. Black (2024) is a cinematic experience that lingers long after the credits roll, reminding us that sometimes, love defies even time itself.

Similar experience is unfolded in Stock Market with BankNifty Index forming similar loops & mostly unfolding an Elliott wave triangle.

Lost opportunity

I wasn't going to watch Black but the plot of Coherence had me eager to see how this had been adopted for the Tamil audience. I'd heard GOOD reviews, but I was fairly certain they'd take at least 20 mins to get the plot started but.....this, while a bold attempt at sci-fi in Kollywood, is a far cry from the original. You may find it worth your time if you have not watched Coherence, but boy was this a mess in comparison. The plot takes about 40 mins to get started, there are elements in the film that feel unnecessary, not sure about the creative decisions but the writer might have had reasons.

From a plot standpoint, this film throws very many scientific terms in the climax and hopes we're like "Oh, i see what happened" and I don't know if that was....convincing.

The original has 8 people central to the plot and you'd think this adds to the complexity but they surprisingly did a good job. In Black, the plot revolves around just the two leads and even that is needlessly convoluted.

Just by itself, it was..an OK movie at best. Keta "Hollywood la yedutha OK nu sollunvinga" nu dialogue viduvanungo. When you take into account that it was an official remake, this was an opportunity wasted.

Watch Coherence regardless, you can then watch Black or skip it.

Mind Blown

I've watched this movie, one of the finest in recent days! If you're a sci-fi movie lover, you can definitely check it out. It's a low-budget movie, but the sound effects and visuals feel like those of a high-end horror film. With only two main characters and a few side actors, Jeeva and Priya nail their screen presence. Every scene builds anxiety . Initially, you're unsure what's happening but as the movie progresses, all questions are answered . The climax is brilliantly executed, and the director's decision to film from the audience's POV is a tactical move. This movie deserves an award in Tamil Nadu ; it's a proud moment for Tamil cinema!

Rating: 5/5 Recommendation: Must Watch!

Above average attempt

If it would have been an original attempt, this was definitely 8+. But there are tons of movies out there that had already covered this topic multiple times and that's why, I can't rate it beyond average. Movies like Triangle, Vivarium, Coherence and such are well made movies with really good script.

What I liked in this movie was the thrill, with a pinch of mystery, that creator and director didn't fall short and which kept me sometimes at the edge of my seat. Inspite of the fact about its inspiration from other movies, still it caught my attention. And this is the reason for some justice in its rating.

What I didn't like were unnecessary songs, some overstretched scenes, and a bit of hurry to reveal climax. There are some scenes that didn't make sense to me but I don't want to reveal them here and reveal spoilers. I am not shrinking any points for this.

I think you can give this movie a try. A one time watch for sure.

Rare Satisfying Scifi in Tamil

Having not seen "Coherence" but knowing it's some kind of time travel movie, had some expectations. Black started to intrigue right from the start. There are a couple of cheesy songs that doesn't exactly match the movie's dark tone but is fun to watch Jeeva in a good form after a long time. But once the movie gets serious it keeps us hooked till the end.

Thankfully the movie avoided spoon feeding information and kept the suspense unravel on its own. There are mentions of some conspiracy theories but there's some ambiguity for the events in the movie. Jeeva and Priya carried their roles well. Kudos to the director for a brave attempt in Kollywood.

An Interesting Film with a Confusing Ending

This movie is about an interesting concept, like the multiverse or black hole theory. First of all, congratulations to the director and the whole team for their effort. The movie stars Jeeva and Priya Bhavani Shankar, and both did a great job in their roles. Music director Sam CS also did a good job with the music.

The best part of the movie is the writing. It's not easy to come up with and execute such a complex idea, but they did it well. Even though it's not a big-budget movie, the story is well thought out and written. The first hour focuses on setting up the story, giving hints about what's to come, and adding details. The movie moves slowly and is fully driven by the story. Before the climax, the film explains why everything is happening, and it's easy to understand and connect the theories to some scenes.

The downside of the movie is the ending. Until the climax, the writing was strong, but the climax felt rushed, and the ending was confusing. Other than that, the director and team did justice to the idea.

I personally liked the movie. If you enjoy films with unique concepts like this, you will like it, at least until the ending. It's a good movie to watch with your family.

Great Sci-fi Thriller Movie

"Black," directed by KG Balasubramani, is a captivating Tamil sci-fi thriller that brilliantly intertwines mystery and suspense. The film follows Vasanth (Jiiva) and Aaranya (Priya Bhavani Shankar) as they escape to a remote villa, only to encounter bizarre occurrences during a supermoon.

Jiiva delivers a top-notch performance, showcasing a range of emotions from vulnerability to determination, while PBS adds depth with her compelling portrayal. The direction and screenplay are exceptional, keeping audiences on the edge of their seats with unexpected twists. The background music enhances the eerie atmosphere, making "Black" a must-watch for thriller enthusiasts. A solid 10/10!

Feel of maanadu and lights out.

Good execution. Last 50 mins is the strongest segment of the movie.

Too many sequences spent to establish the theory behind the strange events, also in its completion by reverse tracking.

A Clean screenwriting just serves for a foolproof establishment and development of events, no serious effort is actually needed to know what's happening.

The setting of the story is very realistic and true to certain basic factors like the actual time period and follow up of events within.

This is a completely script driven movie and is fully engrossed into it's world, and does not depend on any additional effort by its actors and only demands a lot from the technicians, especially the editor of the movie.

In Overall, this movie is for a casual outing in theaters or ott.

The timeline you are in is your reality.

It's 1964, Manohar is helping his friends elope and marry despite being in love with the girl. He takes them to his holiday home and soon, finds them both dead, shocking the bejesus out of him. Years later, Vasanth and Aranya are a couple who are happily married but small strain is showing in their relationship. To make up for it, they plan a vacation and land up in the holiday home. It's the night of red moon and both start feeling strong deja vu. They are further shocked to see similar houses which are occupied despite being not sold. What do they uncover on that night while being stuck in a loop? How does Aranya go missing, turning Vasanth into a suspect? Will Vasanth be able to prove his innocence and find his wife? The film tries to answer them all.

I have not seen the film that acts as inspiration to this one. It is commendable to see a film outside the usual Tamil cinema and 2024 has been the year where this has been tried a few times especially in Kannada films. The story deals with parallel universes theory and the director takes his sweet time to get to the point i.e. Good 40 odd minutes which would be my major complaint. Once the couple settle in the house, it gets interesting and the director is able to keep the mystery alive for the next one hour. The explanation does get oversimplified in the third act and I wish the director had explored the 1964 plot a bit more. The final twist is decent and again, it could have been executed a lot better if the climax had maintained the tense moment. I would still recommend Black to all, just for the attempt.

Black (Tamil) - A Bold and Intriguing Sci-Fi Thriller

I walked into Black with a bit of hesitation, mostly due to the mixed feedback from friends. Usually, I go into movies with little to no knowledge, relying on one simple metric: "Is it good or bad?" This time, however, I was given a small spoiler that the movie revolves around quantum computing. Strangely, instead of dampening my interest, it piqued my curiosity-even though I know very little about quantum computing myself.

To my surprise, I actually enjoyed it! Black felt like a bold, experimental attempt, with a storytelling style that reminded me of English-language sci-fi movies. Jeeva's natural acting stood out, and the heroine's stoic expressions added a unique layer of intrigue to the plot. There was no over-the-top melodrama-just a realistic portrayal of confusion and curiosity as the characters navigated through the story's twists. The narrative felt like a blend of inspiration from several iconic films (Harry Potter, Interstellar, Back to the Future, Edge of Tomorrow, Premonition, and more), yet it managed to retain its originality.

As the plot's complexity reached its peak, I found myself wondering how the movie would wrap everything up. To my relief, it concluded with a logical and satisfying ending that tied the story together neatly.

This film falls under the Horror and Science Fiction genres, though it serves as a great entry point for those who might be hesitant about traditional horror movies. The elements of suspense and intrigue are enough to scratch the surface of the horror genre without diving too deeply into gore or fear.

Interestingly, this experience reminded me of GOAT, Vijay's movie. I had heard overwhelmingly negative reviews about it, but going in with low expectations actually made me appreciate it more. On the other hand, Ganguva, which I approached with similarly low expectations, left me with a headache and regret by the end.

Overall, Black is worth a watch, especially for those who enjoy movies that challenge conventional storytelling while exploring unique sci-fi concepts. It's a bold attempt that deserves credit for its originality and execution.

Black (2024): A Thrilling Tamil Sci-Fi Worth Watching

It is a mind-blowing Tamil sci-fi film that completely exceeded my expectations! As a big fan of sci-fi, I've seen films like Coherence, Vivarium, and Dark Matter, and let me tell you, Black brings its own unique twist to the genre. While the premise might seem familiar, the way this film tells the story is absolutely gripping, fresh, and thrilling from start to finish.

Jeeva (Vasanth) and Priya Bhavani Shankar (Aaranya). Their performances added emotional depth, making the suspenseful moments engaging.

I went into the movie with no expectations, and it completely surprised me. The pacing and the way the plot unfolds. It's a rare Tamil sci-fi that manages to not just entertain but also keep you thinking long after the movie ends.

As a sci-fi enthusiast, I can confidently say this is definitely the second-best Tamil sci-fi film after Indru Netru Naalai. The film is so engaging, and it's bound to spark some interesting conversations among Tamil sci-fi fans. Black is a solid entry in the genre, and if you love sci-fi, it's definitely worth watching!

Worth a watch

Movie started off with a great start but ended up not hitting the mark with unnecessary sub plots that failed to align with the main plot.

Whatever that was missed in the plot was made up with the acting of both actors, Jeeva and Priya. Both played their roles well especially the character of Jeeva as he struggles to understand the confusion and mystery of his surroundings.

That being said, credit has to be given to production team that filled the set with the theme of mystery in the crucial parts. This gave the opportunity for editing to turn put better and honestly, even though the movie could have been better, it is still worth a watch if you are into mystery movies.

One of the simple and gripping story

Less character and sleek story. Very natural dialogues and the romance is easily felt. It feels like real life and story is not overwhelming. Good watch if could watch with dedication and no mobile distraction. People expecting from the movie are depressed ones. The way jiva and heroine acted is really well. Other side characters gel well.

1964, under the glow of a supermoon on a rainy night, three people-a couple who have eloped to marry and their friend, Manohar -travel together by car. Manohar appears to support their union, but in reality, he harbors sinister intentions and is secretly in love with the bride-to-be, Lalitha. Along the way, they encounter a mud-stuck cart, blocking their path carrying a heavy angel statue, far too weighty for a single person to move. After maneuvering past it, they reach Manohar's guesthouse and settle in for the night.

A good thread which lost in screenplay - Watch it only for change

Science fiction movies are relatively rare in Indian cinema, so when I find one, I have to give it a try. It's a tricky genre, and just because you have a basic storyline you can't make a feature film if you don't develop that thread-unfortunately, that's the issue here.

The film follows a couple who travel to their newly bought house in a community for a vacation, only to realize they're skipping timelines. Do they try to break the loop and save themselves, or do they remain trapped? That's for the viewers to discover.

The plot is interesting, and you start a guessing game with questions like what, why, and how it's happening to the couple. It takes a while to piece everything together, and the story makes sense up to that point. But once your questions are answered, the explanations are sloppy and unsatisfactory, leaving you disappointed. There are multiple sequences that feel like filler, adding no value and making you question their place in the narrative.

Jiiva does well in the lead, and he still has that charm; he definitely deserves more roles. Priyanka Bhavani Shankar provides solid support as his wife, with an earnest performance. However, the chemistry between them is lacking, largely due to the screenplay.

This film had a good premise but fell short in developing it. The suspense elements work in the movie's favor, making it worth a watch for a change, but don't expect anything extraordinary.

Vivarium Vibes; But Way Better

An Awesome Mind-Bending Movie Like 'Vivarium', But Way Better.

This one caught my attention only because of some review on YouTube. When I watched the trailer, I felt the Vivarium movie vibes and jump right in. The first flashback of the movie was great, but the unnecessarily cringey song in the first 15 minutes made me skip few minutes. But once the thrill started, we will be in the Mind-Bending Rollercoaster. It was way better than my expectations and love to see the Comeback of Jiiva after a long time. Acting was great by the main characters, Background Sounds & Scenes were Awesome.

I Love It.

Great potential

Movie was really good, a true thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat for most of the movie. The only problem with the movie is the lack of explanations. Towards the end you wonder how, and why everything happened, with a simple 5 second explanation that has no effect to the overall story. A nice backstory on why everything is happening, a better connection to the beginning of the movie would be really good. Other than this it was a perfectly shot thriller movie that was more unique compared to other Tamil horror/thriller genre movies. This movie is similar to Yavarum Nalam, but in execution falls short.

Perfect Script

A must watch movie for science fiction and time loop fans.

A very well written script with very good execution from the directors.

Everything was portrayed clearly with no confusion.

People will find this concept similar to that of "Coherence", but "Black" is good on its own way.

There were some instances where some scenes were not perfectly accurate, so could not give a full 10 on 10, otherwise a neat experience.

Every element of the movie has been perfectly balanced and the connection between all instances were suprisingly well portrayed in a non confusing manner.

Do not miss this movie.

Excellent remake

Kudos to the director, for making such a great sci-fi. His intelligence reflects from the fact that even though it's supposed to be a remake, he has developed the plot independently, only with the core idea of the original film. Since sci-fi movies are very rare in Tamil, it is very enjoyable to watch such a clever sci-fi movie. I watched this only reluctantly, as I had already watched Coherence, the original movie. To my surprise, this remake movie is far more superior than the original movie, which is a rare phenomenon. The original movie offered no solid explanation, whereas this movie offered certain explanation for what was happening in the movie, which is definitely acceptable. The only drawback I felt was, the minimal cast in the remake movie. If there were more characters in the movie, as in the original, it would have been more fun. Otherwise, the movie is completely enjoyable.
