Sports lover or not, it's a cute love story....

6.7/10 (Recommend)

While Hallmark films remain cheesy, and sometimes a little unrealistic in their love story capabilities, 2024 has proven to be a wonderful year for Christmas love. "A Chiefs Love Story" continues that trend.

I'm not a fan of football, and I'm a little sick of hearing about the Chiefs, but in complete honesty this film was amazing. It's emotionally driven (I may have teared up a few times) and it has a cast that works really well together. The chemistry between Hunter King and Tyler Hynes was noticeable right off the bat. As soon as they give those twinkle eyes I knew this movie would be good. Hunter especially puts in a spectacular performance. She takes on her role seriously. She gets visually shaken and upset when she needs to which sells the point being driven. Some Hallmark actresses don't do that and so for me she stands out.

The story is fantastic and tells as if it were a real family affair, but given the traditions and superstitions that sports families have, there's no doubt that this situation plays out in private lives year after year. This movie is slightly different in that it focuses on a families love rather two individuals so it makes more personable I find.

Overall, this movie is a must see for those Hallmark movie fans. You don't even have to like sports or football to understand what's going on. You just have to believe that love can show up in mysterious ways, and sometimes those mysterious ways are in the form of superstitions and Christmas magic.

That's it for now. Thanks for taking time to read my review. Happy watching and enjoy the show!

Cute, sports themed movie

I thought this was a cute movie. It's sports themed and I loved the little Easter eggs (Donna Kelce, Andy Reid, and older retired players) that showed up in the movie. It's definitely a hallmark movie with the over the top family always trying to butt in. This movie was a nice departure from the usual 'high powered executive woman comes to a small town to fix something ands falls for a small town guy'.

Overall though it was typical hallmark and still a cute Christmas themed movie, although that was not as big a theme as football was. I'd highly recommend watching the movie especially if you're a woman who likes sports and romance.

synergy

Alana Higman (Hunter King) is a die-hard Kansas City Chiefs fan. Her parents met as kids with their families sitting next to each other at the games. The family even runs a Chiefs shop in their hometown. They are up for the Fan of the Year contest. Director of fan engagement Derrick (Tyler Hynes) is doing the assessment. There is a magic hat.

The most compelling relationship in this movie is the one between Hallmark and the Kansas City Chiefs. The corporate world calls this synergy. I expected more actual Kansas City Chiefs. I was expecting a few high profile players to run into our couple. The players should want that too. As for the couple, I have always liked Hunter King's comedic timing and Tyler Hynes seems perfectly fine although they could try for Niall Cunningham. There are surprisingly a lot of familiar faces in the other roles. I guess everybody needs a paycheck. This is fine Hallmark and maybe more synergy to come.

Hit and miss plotting

I have to give the writers and producers some credit here, as they tried for something very different in a Christmas movie story, even if the Christmas did only involve wearing a Chiefs' toboggan any time the team has a game on Christmas day.

So they swung big, but only managed bunt single. Okay, wrong sports reference. Maybe I should say they went for a deep throw and only got pass interference, but not a bomb.

Hunter King and Tyler Hynes had decent chemistry here and we've liked Tyler in a few of these movies. He has a unique style that amuses us.

However, some things about this movie jerked us right out of the story, such as a mother and grandmother practically throwing Hunter into a stranger's lap the instant he walked through the door. Then, the whole trope of how upset Hunter got at the "not believing in the hat" was ridiculous, especially when it was the best the writers could come up with to put some late tension in the romance.

Much of the "best fan" story worked, and Ed Begley, Jr. Managed an emotional performance. Parkinsons has left him looking 15 years older than he should look at 75, and that's a shame, but not his fault.

Some of the movies this year have featured an annoying minor character who overacts in embarrassing fashion, and this movie is among them. The deli owner lady almost made me bag this movie in the first five minutes. Thankfully she only appeared once more, and briefly.

We're not sorry we saw this, despite a few plot issues, but we won't be going back for a repeat.

Cameos

There was far too much hype for this movie including "live" updates in every commercial break in the movie preceding this. Also, I am very much not a Chiefs fan. For me they are the current Evil Empire of the NFL. (Actually they have some very upstanding players and I use the term evil as hyperbole.) But once again I am faced with my obsession to watch every Christmas movie premiere on at least 5 channels.

I enjoyed this movie. It was enough different from the usual stuff and there may have been snow, but no snowball fights or many of the other checklist items for a Christmas movie. Tyler Hynes and Hunter King have very good chemistry, almost what I sometimes call sizzling. The story hooked me first with the quest to win the fan contest and then looking to the outcome of the obstacle near the end.

I thought the acting was a little mixed. Hynes was his usual steady but laid back self. King's character had attractive qualities but also some neurosis especially in her total obsession with the superstition. Given that, I had mixed feelings about the ending, especially after the buildup of the backstory. (I realize that these feelings are somewhat contradictory.)

As I said, not a Chiefs fan, so I didn't recognize many of the cameos, but there seemed to be a few.

Such a sweet and magical Christmas Love Story!

This movie was a pure, fun, heartwarming delight, and I am still smiling over it. This story was so sweet and fun. It was such a delightful love story and Christmas movie. This movie was just what I needed in my life right now-a sweet holiday escape. It spoke to me as a lover of rom-coms, but also to the sports fan in me who loves the excitement of supporting my teams-both my own team and my new adopted team. Go Chiefs! I also really enjoyed Derrick's story, as he was lonely and adrift and perhaps a little bit devoid of a full and tradition-filled family life, and this warm, welcoming, colorful family really drew him in. The writing was exquisite and sweet, gently and skillfully coaxing a few unexpected tears, delighted laughs, and the occasional audible "awwww" from my lips. And there was such believable chemistry between these two characters. Hunter King and Tyler Hynes' performances were flawless and genuine and fun, and we could feel such energy and connection from both as they brought their characters to life. This movie also was so beautifully enriched by the supporting cast, who really brought depth and color to this lovely story. The more I think about it the more I just want to watch it over and over and feel the happiness it brings.

Credit for honoring the locals

I will rarely give a Hallmark movie better than a 6, because they're designed to be predictable easy watching. And, that's great. But, as a person that grew up around the KC area, I felt the need to give credit to the writers and filmmakers for their efforts. They made a point, not just to shoot on location, but to include locals and mention major landmarks. I do wish that they'd used native talent, but they were believable Midwesterners, and it did a pretty good job of capturing that spirit. I'm not a football fan, but clearly they included celebrities from the team as well. A must watch for Chiefs fan, just for the cameos.

Loved the fun sports fan superstition premise, great lead actors chemistry

I loved the premise of this movie, diehard sports fans superstitions...with some love and nostalgia thrown in. The lead actors had great chemistry, supported by witty banter dialogue. The supporting cast were a hoot, especially the eggnog outside party scene...and the running joke regarding the questionable eggnog ingredient. I found myself laughing throughout the movie. I didn't recognize the real Chiefs players that made cameos, but I knew enough about the team to understand some of the inside winks such as Catrick. The love story aspect had all the good warm fuzzy feels you want in a Hallmark movie. This is a movie I will watch again for its genuine fun, story, actors, and to pickup on any inside jokes I missed!

A Kansas City Chiefs Christmas

Clearly the Chiefs poured a tonne of money into what is probably safely the most niche Hallmark Christmas movie of 2024. Probably means more if you're a Chiefs fan, but a slow start gave way to a sentimental finish centered around a beloved family football heirloom, and it's hard to argue that Tyler Hynes and Hunter King don't work well together.

What else? A Wes Brown cameo, some horrendous CGI and green screen work, a scene with people getting blotted on eggnog, Ed Begley Jr. In a touching role and a handful of cameos by Chiefs players and a cat that allegedly looks like Patrick Mahomes, who was himself absent from the film. As I said, quite a niche product.

Here's hoping Tyler Hynes and Hunter King star in something a little more mainstream next Christmas.

It was ok

I live in Kansas City and am a Chiefs fan but this was a little much.

It was unrealistic and cheesy at times. There were times the acting was bad. The movie seemed low budget as well.

Stores in the area hyped this movie up so much acting like they were in it and we should watch and it wasn't worth it.

There were times I wanted to turn it off and then kept watching thinking it would get better and it didn't. If the plot was better and it was a generic football team maybe it would have been better?!? Maybe. It just seemed like they were shoving the chiefs down everyone's throat like they need more bandwagon fans.

Bah Humbug to TOO much Chiefs

You got one of the All Time Patriots fans here. Who moved to the BUCS when Brady and my man Gronk moved-it didn't hurt I was living in Rotonda West Fl at the time. I now live in Matthews, NC. I am trying hard to find something to like with the Panthers. But this is about reviewing a movie. Come on Toooo Much- It's a Hallmark Movie. Hallmark is HQ'd where? So why not the Chiefs. I thought it had the right amount of Football Fan Stuff and Love Story. Actually was my fav Tyler Hynes in a while. I enjoyed the story line with skating stuff, cameos and Hallmark twists. I am glad that we don't have to wait until the end of a movie to see the leads have their first kiss. And you obviously didn't know about the pillow thing being good luck or eating a barbecue chicken wing at the right time at your favorite sports bar. Brought back so many memories with my husband and me being the sports enthusiast in my family. I can truly understand the family attachment to that hat- I have one for my 16-0 T-shirt. I found the movie fun and well done. But I am a romantic.

Honest review from a Bills fan

Die hard Bills Mafia here. The movie would have been perfect holiday fodder except for the constant reminders of the Chiefs going to the Super Bowl.

Everyone knows who they had to beat to get there. And it's all because of a magical hat? Jared Allen would be rolling in his grave if he weren't still alive and playing like an MVP.

In reality, the best part of the movie was perusing IMDB to sniff out all the 90's comedy sitcoms the rest of the cast was from. It was a nice little trip down memory lane and I highly recommend the practice.

Anyway would I watch this again? Absolutely not. Will my wife probably make me watch it again next year or maybe once more in the week between Christmas and new years? Probably. Let's hope it's the last time I have to see anything KC positive for a while.

Full of Football and Christmas Magic

Holiday Touchdown, A Chiefs Love Story is a delightful celebration of love, family, and football that perfectly embodies Hallmark's signature charm. This heartwarming story seamlessly blends the festive spirit of the holidays with the electrifying energy of Kansas City Chiefs football, showcasing how the sport has the power to bring families and communities closer together. From heartfelt moments to playful game-day traditions, the film highlights the vibrant culture of Kansas City and its love for the Chiefs. Fans of Hallmark's classic feel-good format will adore this uplifting tale of second chances, holiday magic, and the bond that football creates. A must-watch for Chiefs Kingdom and Hallmark enthusiasts alike!

Really sad!

Many great cast members (not a Hunter King or Chiefs fan) but a really quirky movie that just doesn't come together. Character development is poor, plot murky, and just not fun. The acting is stiff and seems like many actors are just going through the motions. The lone bright spot is Ed Begley Jr as his performance feels real. It seems like Hallmark tried to capitalize on the Chiefs popularity and failed miserably. The on field segment was not believable and the addition of. Jenna Bush Hager was a low point. I'm surprised they didn't try to put Tayor Swift in the movie. (Probably read the script and declined).

It was just DUMB

Usually these Hallmark Christmas movies are cheesy, but this one was so so BAD! The male lead we've seen in other movies and he's a pro. The female lead stressed me out!!!! She overplayed the part and always seemed panicked and hi-strung. Maybe her character was supposed to have some anxiety but goodness, this was stressful. I am from KC,MO (lived there for almost 43 years) and thus a Chiefs fan. The stadium shots of the crowd were dull. I mean this is CHIEFS STADIUM! THE LOUDEST STADIUM and the fans shown seemed on downers or something. It was nice to see some other familiar actors (Mr. Begley and Mr. Bader), and I REALLY enjoyed the performance of the actor who played Santa. Hello to K. C. Wolf and Andy Reid. But not even any of these were enough to pull this production out of the tank. The plot or dialog was just not good. Perhaps that left the actors with not much to work with. It's not like Hallmark movies are that great. That's why I stopped watching them as they were always YAWN predictable. But I tuned into this because of the Chiefs theme. I really hoped that Hallmark would do this right, but once again was disappointed. It's a hard PASS.

Review from a Hynie!

First of all! Insane chemistry w Alana and Derrick. The family is a hoot! And very meddling esp the mom and grandma. This town was cute n quaint, taken place In Independence KS. Such a sweet movie. Love people. The engagement of fans. And how they all come together. Love love the story as well. The cast has done a phenomenal job Anyone have been superstitious or have any rituals or superstitions for football seasons? It was good amount of family. Football fans. Love. And connections from the past. It was not "too much" Chiefs. Coming from a Packer fan here loved seeing Packers "whopping" KC on there but it was sweet. Lovedddddddddd how the story and movie wrapped up! Omg. I was nearly in tears!!! Omgggg perfect ending!! Wow wow wowwwww. And and and hats off to Catrick!!!!! The writer of this movie did great job making her script come to life. All from a tiny teaser promo last year where Hallmark meets NFL.... If not fan or football or hallmark. Then this movie is not for you. It was a sweet cute n funny one for me I enjoyed it...

Disappointed

Well...I am a Chiefs fan; I am a Hunter King fan, and I am a Tyler Hines fan.

But sorry, this was a dud.

I wish I could just stop there, but alas, I must elaborate.

If you're not a Chiefs fan, I don't know how you make it to the end of such a movie. They really laid it on thick.

I didn't find the chemistry between Hines and King very strong at all. The writing was so-so, and the general plot was a little strange.

I did like the supporting cast, and Ed Begley, Jr. Was pretty good as the crotchety old guy.

I thought it was interesting that there was a scene in which the entire family was all getting hammered on eggnog in a Hallmark movie.

I wish I had better things to say. But I don't.

Oh Boy Where to Start

Nope, nada, boring, silly... sorry but where the heck was Christmas??? I think this movie was dreadful!! Hallmark super hyped it up so we would all watch with anticipation- what a huge fumble! I know many people will roll their eyes with this review but hey, it's my opinion. I thought the actors did a good job with what they had to work with but what really threw me was very early on as the leads were sitting around the fire and at some point they stand up and suddenly hold hands.... Nah, it doesn't happen like that, there was very little build up to produce a hand holding at that point in time. The CGI or whatever it's called was so clearly fake. The fact the lead actress would put so much faith in a hat was nothing short of absurdity, she was ready to throw her potential life partner away over a hat- really? As another reviewer stated, it truly was a bumble and a super duper fumble! I gave it a 6 for the acting, some parts were ok especially with the grandfather, I did find him endearing. Sorry Hallmark, you missed your mark with this one.

I am not a Chief's fan but...

I adored this movie.

I am a football fan and understand the superstitious nature of games. It's a thing.

Grandpa Paul reminded me of my grandpa who I dearly miss. Their relationship was so sweet and I can relate. I definitely needed a tissue or two.

The family story is really neat and I enjoyed the backstory.

The chemistry between the entire cast was great. Alana & Derrick had awesome chemistry. I loved their interaction.

Some of the reviews of this movie seem like takedowns, either anti-Chiefs or just bombing it for ridiculous reasons. I've seen it with other popular Hallmark movies or specific actors. Look, I don't like the Chiefs but I enjoyed the movie. The family story is the focal point and it's lovely.

Have the Faith! Amazing movie

It's an absolutely beautiful story about family traditions and how sports can create so many more memories than just the sports. If you're looking for a Christmas movie that's more than just a normal hallmark movie this is the movie for you. There hasn't been a better Christmas movie out in years. Have faith and watch what can happen to you.

For somebody that's been going through a very rough year this was just the movie that my 4-year-old son and I needed to see. It made me open my heart to knowing that if I just continue to have the faith and continue to do whats right that may be one day something magical like this could happen to both of us.

Oh dear

A UK viewer here, so all the excitement and frantic passion about an American football team was lost on someone this side of the pond.

I watched purely because I love seeing Tyler Hynes in action. His previous work has always had cheeky humour with a twinkly eye - what girl wouldn't love that !

This film widely missed the mark. His on screen time was completely overwhelmed by the over acting of the most absurd family, and coupled with a ridiculous storyline you get to the point where you'd rather walk over hot coals than sit through to the end.

His co-star Hunter King never really cut the nustard as a romantic lead. Hynes had far better rapport with other actresses that was more believable in his previous films. It showed that there was no chemistry between these two.

Hopefully Hynes will get more films in the same vein as It Was Always You - because this movie did him no favours at all.
