Movie had all the marking to be a cult. The suspense was really good, the bus chase sequence was of international quality, the babuetan today shop fight ( one vs 8)scene was insanely shot, and that brilliant climax when it all unravels.
The only point where the movie falters is the scene involving basil joseph in police station where it could have been written better with some witty dialogues. All the actors have played their part well. Overall it ends as a Good descent watch. But a big shout out to this movie's director who is technically very gifted. Will be keen to watch what he does next.

Pravinkoodu shappu:
an engaging murder mystery with top notch performances by Basil Joseph and Soubin Shahir
packed with good twists, light humor and pulse-pounding climax.
Bus chase and action scenes was a visual treat to see...deceiving elements really work well.
Basila and Soubin shines with all other supporting actors performing really well.
Made me laugh for some scenes and some dialogues were like natural and didn't feel they are acting at all..
short of words to say about this semi comedy thriller....
don't miss ...a must watch definitely .. Malyalam movie is at its peak since 2024.

I had a hard time figuring out how much I liked this film. This is one of those films that if I was watching with someone else, their opinion would have been pivotal to my final opinion of it. There's so much to like in this film, from the general quirkiness, the performances, the technical side with great cinematography and editing, etc. But at the same time, there's also a lot that doesn't work. It does feel like a try-hard most of the time. The plot itself is simple and lackluster but they have tried to make it interesting by making it a stylistic non linear comedy. The comedy was hit or miss. It's refreshing when it hits but a lot of times it misses and the misses are cringe at best and frustratingly annoying at worst. But towards the end, it kind of becomes a total tonal mess, and adding extensive exposition also didn't help. Overall it's kind of fun and the way it unfolds is certainly interesting but even with such a dream technical execution for a debutant director, the script lacks substance and shows the inexperience there. This really feels like people may love it if they get the vibe or they may just think it's another boring investigation movie.

Good story wasted by too many red herrings and a bad ending. Basil Joseph did try to carry it through. Chopping last 20 minutes could have improved it, but that may be the case when Bollywood remakes it.
I did like some long takes with stylized action and performance by all the actors. All OK barring some unrelated police station scenes and needless ending drama. A simple mystery with "who dunnit" could have been enough.
Although a predictable murder mystery with creative narration is always welcome. This is still far better than the junk cinema being churned out elsewhere. Too much confusion, not in story but in directing.

A satirical investigation drama on the backdrop of a countryside toddy shop in Thrissur.
The plot of the story is on a murder that happened inside the toddy shop and the hilarious events surrounding the investigation forms the base for the storyline.
Sreeraj has dealt the subject by blending light humour moments in the story. The story lost its grip in few areas in the first half and gets back on track after the intermission with some interesting developments. The detailing given to the modus-o-perandi in crime seems convincing but the way the entire story was layered felt wimpy.
Good performance by Basil Joseph as the investigative officer with his waggish mannerisms and witty laugh. Subtle performance of the character by Soubin. Impressive performances by Shivajith,Chemban Vinod,Chandini,Sabareesh Varma and few theatre artists who played the characters in the toddy shop.
Good Background score by Vishnu Vijay especially in the climax sequences.
A fair attempt by Sreeraj Sreenivasan with a distinctive narrative style.

While it may not stand out as one of the mentionable entries among Malayalam thrillers, it does have a few clever tricks up its sleeves, particularly the detailing went into the execution of the "murder," which will surely deliver some delightful surprises for the susceptible audience.
However, the primary issue in the script lies in its blunt predictability.
For those well accustomed to Malayalam cinema and its conventions specifically within the space of thrillers, the identity of the culprit becomes apparent long before the final reveal.
Not to mention, Integrating a renowned figure among the suspects tends to give away the outcome more often than not, making it an easy, calculated deduction, especially when other personalities on board lack adequate materials in terms of their narratives and backstories.

Joseph Basil's role could have been portrayed more effectively by a character with a more serious and grounded presence. While his performance had a few moments that came off as cringeworthy or overly exaggerated, it can still be overlooked when considering the broader context of the film and the strong performances delivered by the rest of the cast. His acting didn't entirely ruin the experience, but a better-suited actor might have elevated certain scenes. Despite that, the film as a whole was enjoyable and engaging. Overall, I loved it and would definitely recommend it to a wide range of audiences.
Watched this on OTT due to a Basil Joseph hangover whose brilliance in recent times has been overwhelming..Basil can still wear half pants and pass off as a school boy character or a frustrated young man who vents it out in his trademark comic fashion. But he has a long way to go before essaying a cop's role, funny or otherwise. In a nutshell, the movie shone in parts but simply failed to engage after 1 hour..Basil, pls make up for this in your next one, I'll continue to swear by Malayalam movies with the likes of you around..5 stars for you and some of the funny characters in the toddy shop and the cinematography.

A Tense and Twisty Ride Worth Every Minute.
This film effortlessly grips you from its opening scene and refuses to let go. From the eerie cinematography to the subtle, creeping score, every element works together to amplify the suspense. The cast delivers standout performances, especially the lead, whose nuanced portrayal keeps you guessing at every turn. While the plot initially seems straightforward, unexpected revelations constantly shift the narrative, making it almost impossible to predict the ending. The director deftly balances tension and intrigue, ensuring that every scene contributes to the overarching mystery rather than feeling like filler. Overall, this movie is a haunting puzzle that thriller enthusiasts will devour-it's clever, unpredictable, and deeply satisfying.

A film with no proper purpose, the sad part is that it had lots of potential to be great with that talented cast and they could have made the film focus more on comedy or just thriller, it tried to bind both of these genres together and it just didn't work. It's a great combo if done right but here the film falters due to an inconsistent screenplay, bad dialogues and poor direction.
One thing I have got to give credit for is the cinematography and the score done by Shyju Khalid and Vishnu Vijay respectively. Overall the film was very forgettable and a very below average experience for me.

Set up in the backdrop of a toddy shop, a crime happens & how the mystery gets unlocked is all about the movie. The movie turns out to a watchable flick because of its unique nature of crime pattern adapted in this story.
By the initial few minutes of the movie commencement, writer - director Sreeraj able to involve the audience into his world. He able to create an illusion towards his scripted crime thereby, not only to the characters but for the audience the thinking pattern was on the same track. Also as mentioned earlier the uniqueness in the crime pattern he adapted adds another positive factor to the film.
Basil Joseph as the investigative officer had done an astounding performance. The screenplay had his character development structure & at the required time, Basil brings out the transformation it requires thereon making the character worth watching at the big screen. Another notable performance was of Soubin Shahir, playing the character of a worker in a toddy shop. The character faces a lot of challenges and the character has its own shades which makes quite interesting to watch.
Shivajith playing as the toddy shop owner. This character had been portrayed as a terror as the description given by the fellow characters gives a feel to it & Shivajith able to set into the character very well thereby providing a notable performance.
Apart from the lead, artists Chandini Sreedharan, Chemban Vinod & also the characters surrounding the toddy shop had done a decent performance.
Talking about the technical aspect special mention to editor Shafique Mohamed Ali for his meticulous cuts thereon making the audience engaged into the world of mystery. Apart from the editing, Shyju Khalid cinematography is also top notch especially during the bike chase scenes, it is worth captivating.
Gokul Das production design & Vishnu Vijay's music accelerates the viewing interest.
Overall, a theatrical watch experience movie.

Pravinkoodushappu (2025)
Pathetic Thriller. Not up to the mark.
Directorial debut of writer, director Sreeraj Sreenivasan. The story follows the investigation of a death at a toddy shop named "Pravinkoodushappu". An investigation headed by young police officer, reveals the real hidden reason behind the murder.
The film stars Basil Joseph , Soubin Shahir, Chemban Vinod Jose, with Chandini Sreedharan and Shivajith.
A total misuse of "Rashomon" effects, an investigation story becomes a tragic revenge drama, but the tone of the movie is misplaced by the key departments of direction, editing, bgm.
Could have been a great movie if they had reworked the script.
Wasted movie deserve a 2/10.

Pravinkoodu Shappu presents a fresh and engaging theme that sets the tone for an entertaining ride through rustic Kerala life. The premise holds promise, and though the theme is noteworthy, the overall execution falls a bit short due to an average screenplay. The narrative could have been presented in a more refined manner to create a lasting impact.
One of the strong pillars of the movie lies in its technical aspects. The cinematography captures the earthy tones and village aesthetics beautifully, enhancing the immersive experience. Costumes and set design stay true to the local flavour, adding authenticity to the story. The art direction deserves special mention for staying grounded and believable.
The film smartly incorporates comedy, especially in scenes set at the police station and toddy shop. These lighter moments balance the high-octane action sequences that carry a raw, native flavor - the kind of traditional "naadan thallu" that fans of the genre would appreciate.
Performance-wise, Basil stands out with his unique screen presence and character portrayal. He handles his role with natural ease and charisma. Chemban Vinod Jose delivers a solid performance, even outshining Soubin Shahir at times, who remains largely average throughout the film. On the other hand, Chandini fails to impress, delivering a bland performance that adds little to the narrative. Her presence as the female lead feels underwhelming and miscast.
Overall, Pravinkoodu Shappu is a mixed bag - a film with great potential and a solid thematic base, but one that could have benefited from tighter writing and stronger performances in key roles. It's worth a watch for its cultural texture, action, and moments of rustic humour, even if it doesn't fully deliver on all fronts.

Recently watched movie with good expectations..due to high quality of malayalam movie in recent years this movie also started well but fall of till climax.... movie started with murder in toddy shop and then goes to investigation part.. movie also has some elements of dark humour..but movie failed to deliver in many aspects...first of all length of movie is worrying..it could have easily short to 40 minutes..and character development is poor ...Direction is also not up to mark..some portion are really interesting and even explain in end is also satisfied...one time watch movie..not have enough power to be great movie.
