Indian Revenge Thriller Breaks Records, Cracks US Top 10 Box Office
Image
Coolie has landed in the Top 10 in the United States. The new Tamil-language movie stars Rajinikanth as Deva, a man who is unwaveringly committed to revenge, no matter what it takes. It was directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, from a screenplay he co-wrote with Chandhru Anbazhagan.

After debuting on August 14, the movie has already become a global success. Worldwide, it has earned ₹404 crore (roughly $464.2 million), making it the highest-grossing Tamil-language movie of 2025 so far and the third highest-grossing Indian movie of the year in general, behind Saiyaara (₹561.90 crore) and Chhaava (~₹809 crore), which are both Hindi-language titles.

Per Deadline, Coolie earned a 3-day total of $2.45 million during its opening weekend at the domestic box office. This was more than enough for it to land at No. 10, making it the only non-English movie on the domestic chart alongside Hollywood titles such as F1 The Movie, Jurassic World Rebirth, Superman, The Naked Gun, Freakier Friday,...

He’s the Internet’s Favorite Leading Man. Can He Make It Happen In Real Life?
Image
Actors love spouting life lessons. Sometimes it’s about looking within, or being thankful, or being true to the spirit of the craft. The lesson Manny Jacinto takes with him to this day? It’s a lot more straightforward: “Don’t throw chairs.”

Nonsensical? Perhaps, but for Jacinto, the exhortation is literal. Born in Manila, Phillipines, but raised in British Columbia, Jacinto fell in love with showbiz when he took a dance class in college. After graduation, he began auditioning for various bit parts in Vancouver’s film community, which...

Internet Reacts To Disney Busting Out Jamie Lee Curtis Freakier Friday Ad
Image
Disney has managed to get their failing “Freakier Friday” movie some much needed internet attention this week after dropping an ad with Jamie Lee Curtis. The intention might have been pure, but the internet is not.

Now the internet is buzzing talking about Miss Curtis’s assets.

The ad was simply Jamie Lee Curtis talking about how excited she is to be working on “Freakier Friday” and how much joy and nostalgia the final product could bring.

The clip was apparently filmed at a recent screening of the film, where Curtis surprised the crowd.

It’s unclear why Disney thought this spot was a good idea, but they really do need all the publicity they can get to drive up the box office.

‘Weapons’ Stays No. 1 at U.K. and Ireland Box Office as ‘Materialists’ and Rajinikanth’s ‘Coolie’ Open Strong
Image
Warner Bros.’ “Weapons” held the No. 1 position at the U.K. and Ireland box office for a second weekend, adding £1.5 million ($2.1 million) and bringing its total to £6.2 million ($8.4 million), according to Comscore.

Sony Pictures launched Celine Song’s romantic drama “Materialists,” starring Dakota Johnson, Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal, straight into second place with $1.7 million. Indian release “Coolie,” with superstar Rajinikanth leading a galaxy of pan-India stars, distributed by Lights On Entertainment, followed closely at No. 3 with $1.27 million.

Disney’s body-swap comedy “Freakier Friday” dropped to No. 4 in its sophomore frame, grossing $1.24 million for a running total of $5.4 million. Rounding out the top five was Disney’s Marvel film “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” which earned $930,095 and now stands at $28.1 million after four weeks on release.

Outside the top five, Universal’s “The Bad Guys 2” was at No. 6 with $733,648, lifting its cume to $11.9 million. Paramount’s “The Naked Gun...

In Hollywood, timing is everything. For decades, sequels were expected to arrive within a couple of years — or not at all. But that rule has shifted dramatically in recent years, with studios revisiting long-dormant franchises and giving them a new life, including the much-anticipated Freaky Friday sequel.

From Top Gun: Maverick to the upcoming Gladiator II, audiences have proven they’re more than willing to return to beloved stories, no matter how much time has passed.

Now, Disney is bringing back one of its most successful live-action comedies. The Freaky Friday sequel reunites Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan more than 20 years after the 2003 hit became a family favorite.

Sydney Sweeney's New Movie Was Ignored At The Box Office - What Happened?
Image
One would be forgiven for not knowing about it, but Sydney Sweeney, one of the biggest rising stars in Hollywood, was in a new movie that opened in theaters over the weekend. The film in question is "Americana," which debuted to solid buzz coming out of SXSW in 2023. Yet, it's only just now hitting the big screen after being acquired by Lionsgate early last year. Sad to say, more than two years after its festival debut, the movie was all but ignored at the box office.

Debuting on just over 1,100 screens, director Tony Tost's "Americana" made just $500,000 on its opening weekend domestically, per Deadline. These numbers weren't even reported by Lionsgate and aren't available via online databases such as Box Office Mojo or The Numbers. In other words, the film is pretty much dead on arrival and will have to make the lion's share of its money on VOD and streaming.

Disney Releases Jamie Lee Curtis “Ad” For Freakier Friday That is Raising Eyebrows
Image
Freakier Friday debuted in theaters on August 8, 2025. Sadly, it isn’t doing well at $86.2 million worldwide. Currently, it’s getting beaten by the horror film “Weapons.”

Now Disney has released a clip of Jamie Lee Curtis talking about the film and why families should see it.

The post seems like it was filmed while in production, as Ms. Curtis is wearing her outfit from the movie. Honestly, this isn’t the outfit I would have used for the “ad,” as it puts the focus on her attire and away from what she’s saying.

What does Jamie Lee Curtis say?

She talks about how the film is sweet and a great way to end the summer saying,

“Hi, everybody. It’s Jamie Lee Curtis.

Freakier Friday Box Office Beat Three Major Movies This Sunday But Fell Short of ‘Weapons’
Image
With the Sunday box office numbers now pouring in, many would be surprised to see Jamie Lee Curtis’ Freakier Friday beating films like The Fantastic Four: First Steps and The Bad Guys 2. This Sunday, the film earned $4.2 million, in comparison to the MCU movie’s $2.7 million and the Universal animated film’s $2.29 million (via Box Office Mojo).

And while Bob Odenkirk’s Nobody 2 sits at last place with $2.27 million on Sunday, the supernatural horror film Weapons takes the top spot with a $7.79 million earning figure on the same day.

Despite the Marvel Studios film having a lot to ride on for Phase 6, a simple sequel and an original horror film were able to outdo it in cinemas. And when you learn what Freakier Friday and Weapons offer, you’ll understand how.

Box-Office Weekend: Weapons #1 for Two Weeks
Image
The first two films on the box-office weekend top ten maintained the status quo from last weekend as Weapons held onto first place by $10.5 million over second-place repeater Freakier Friday.

In its second weekend of release, the Warner Bros. release Weapons again finished in first place with $25.0 million, bringing the film’s overall total to $89.0 million. Meanwhile, Freakier Friday stood firm in second place where it made another $14.5 million for Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, bringing the film’s two-week total to $54.8 million. In third place, Universal Pictures International saw the release of the sequel Nobody 2 garner $9.3 million for the studio. That debut pushed The Fantastic Four: First Steps to fourth place where it made $8.8 million for Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, raising the film’s four-week total to $247.0 million. Also falling a spot was the Universal Pictures release The Bad Guys 2, which dropped to fifth place over...

Weapons box office results proved dominant for the second straight weekend. The R-rated thriller stayed in the top spot, while Disney’s Freakier Friday held firm in second. Universal’s Nobody 2 struggled to gain traction, and Marvel’s Fantastic Four: First Steps kept sliding. Rounding out the top five was DreamWorks’ The Bad Guys 2, which showed steady family appeal.

Weapons Box Office: Horror Hit Dominates Again

The R-rated horror film Weapons earned $25 million in its second weekend. That’s only a 43% drop from its debut. For horror, this is impressive, since many titles fall more than 55% after opening.

With $89 million domestic and $148 million worldwide against a $38 million budget, Weapons is already a hit. Strong word of mouth and solid reviews are helping it stay ahead of the competition.

Sydney Sweeney’s ‘Americana’ Bombs at Box Office After Her American Eagle Controversy
Image
Sydney Sweeney has gone from American Eagle flap to Americana flop. Weeks after the Euphoria actor’s Ae jeans ads sparked controversy, her film Americana has bombed at the box office. Americana opened to an estimated $500,000 from 1,123 theaters in its nationwide debut this weekend, ranking 16th in the domestic box office, per The Hollywood Reporter. By contrast, Sweeney’s 2023 rom-com, Anyone But You, opened to $6 million on its way to a domestic haul of more than $88 million, according to The Numbers. As for Americana’s competition, Weapons continued ruling the box office with an estimated $25 million from 3,450 theaters in its second weekend, THR adds. Freakier Friday came in second place in its second weekend with an estimated $14.5 million from 3,975 theaters. And Nobody 2 came in third with $9.3 million from 3,260 theaters in its box office debut. Written and directed by Tony Tost (Poker Face) in his film debut, Americana is a...

Weekend Box Office: Weapons easily takes the top spot in week 2
Image
Thank God for Weapons. Were it not for Zach Cregger’s word-of-mouth sleeper, August would be a deadly dull month at the box office, with nothing in these dog days capable of injecting life into multiplexes. However, Cregger’s movie has become a zeitgeist-catching film, similar to what happened with another Warner Bros. title earlier this year, Sinners, tapping into a market that’s tired of sequels. It’s a legitimately original hit, falling only 43% in its second week, with a $25 million weekend and an $89 million North American gross. It should easily top the box office next week as well.

What’s the lesson from this? Audiences are starved for original fare and tired of sequels. Will the lesson be learned? Probably not, as WB is already trying to franchise Weapons and Sinners, suggesting that the era of one-offs may be behind us. Meanwhile, Disney’s Freakier Friday, which hasn...

Weapons Box Office Dominance: Strong Week 2 for Horror Movie (Sunday Update)
Image
Update: 2025/08/17 08:08 Est By Brennan Klein

Weapons Holds Strong With Solid Week 2 Drop

This article was originally written Saturday Am and has been updated Sunday Am with up-to-date box office projections (in bold), a full chart, and further analysis.

Weapons has taken No. 1 at the domestic box office for the second weekend in a row. The Zach Cregger horror movie debuted on August 8, taking No. 1 over fellow new release Freakier Friday with a 3-day haul of $43.5 million. By the end of its first full week in theaters, it had surpassed the $100 million milestone worldwide.

Weapons had a great deal of competition during its sophomore weekend with the arrival of four major new releases. These include the Bob Odenkirk action sequel Nobody 2, Spike Lee's Kurosawa remake Highest 2 Lowest (his first time working with longtime collaborator Denzel Washington since 2006's Inside Man), the horror remake Witchboard, and the Sydney Sweeney crime thriller Americana.

‘Weapons’ Loads $25M Second Weekend, ‘Nobody 2’ Stuck At $9M+ Opening – Sunday Am Box Office Update
Image
Sunday Am Writethru: After Saturday post… Summer is heading into its August sleep with the overall weekend for all titles falling under $100M for the second time this season with an estimated $93M per ComScore. The last time this happened was during the second weekend of summer, May 9-11, when all movies grossed just over $84M per Box Office Mojo. While summer at $3.4 billion remains ahead of last year’s heat wave by +2%, as we mentioned last weekend, we’re unlikely to hit $4 billion (that last time we did that was pre-Covid).

As we said earlier this week, thank God Warner Bros moved Weapons into the late summer, or else we wouldn’t be feeling a pulse. The Zach Cregger pic’s hold for weekend 2 stands at -43% for a second frame of $25M after a $7.4M Friday and Saturday of $9.6M, +29%.

Box Office: ‘Weapons’ Slays ‘Nobody 2’ With $25M, Sydney Sweeney’s ‘Americana’ Drops $500K Bomb
Image
Bob Odenkirk’s modestly budgeted sequel Nobody 2 is having to settle for a third-place finish in its domestic box office debut as Zach Cregger’s Weapons continues to fire on all cylinders and stay atop the chart in its sophomore outing, followed by Disney’s family comedy Freakier Friday.

Nobody 2, about a seemingly average suburban dad who leads a double life as a stealth operative, is on course to open on the lower end of expectations with $9.3 million from 3,260 locations after receiving a B+ CinemaScore from audiences (its audience ranking on Rotten Tomatoes is more promising at 89 percent). Its early global total is $14.2 million.

The first Nobody opened amid the pandemic to $6.8 million on its way to grossing a pleasing $68 million domestically. The sequel cost a reported $25 million to make before marketing, so no one at Universal is losing sleep, since it is sure to make up ground...

Box Office: ‘Weapons’ Drops Just 43% in Bloody-Good Second Weekend
Image
“Weapons” crept back to the top of box office charts, collecting a significant $25 million in its second weekend of release. Ticket sales for the R-rated horror film declined just 43% from its $43 million debut, an impressive hold for a genre that’s known to drastically fall after opening weekend.

En route to sleeper hit status, “Weapons” has grossed $89 million domestically and $148 million worldwide after two weekends of release. The film, which cost a modest $38 million, is benefiting from great reviews and electric word-of-mouth. It’s the fifth consecutive hit for Warner Bros. following “A Minecraft Movie,” “Sinners,” “Final Destination Bloodlines” and “Superman.” Fortunes have reversed for the studio after starting the year with such financial misfires as “Mickey 17” and “The Alto Knights.”

This weekend’s only major new release, Universal’s action thriller “Nobody 2,” didn’t pack too strong a punch. The film, starring Bob Odenkirk as a seemingly...

‘Weapons’ Still Roaring at Box Office With $25 Million 2nd Weekend
Image
With the summer box office winding down, Warner Bros./New Line’s “Weapons” remains atop the charts with a very impressive $25 million second weekend.

While not the spectacular 3% second weekend drop of fellow Warner horror hit “Sinners” this past spring, it is still just a 43% drop from the $43.5 million opening for director Zach Cregger’s second feature film. It now stands with an $89 million domestic total and $148.8 million worldwide against a $38 million spend.

Last week, “Weapons” became the sixth straight Warner release to open above $40 million in North America, and this week it will become the sixth straight film to clear $100 million in domestic grosses.

While the studio had a weak first quarter of 2025 with box office duds like “Companion,” “Mickey 17,” and “Alto Knights,” Warner turned it around with the near-$1 billion box office run of Legendary’s “A Minecraft Movie.” The streak continued with “Sinners,” “Final Destination: Bloodlines,...

Since its July 11 release, Superman quickly became the top-grossing superhero film of 2025, leaving behind Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts, even as The Fantastic Four: First Steps arrived two weeks later.

Sydney Sweeney’s Great Jeans Can’t Save Americana From Weapons Box-Office Onslaught: Full Report
Image
Sydney Sweeney‘s Americana has finally opened in theatres, and the box-office reception has fallen short immensely. Although Sweeney’s American Eagle ad landed the Euphoria star in her career’s biggest controversy yet, the online traffic surrounding this discussion didn’t exactly translate into its box-office numbers (via The Hollywood Reporter).

Set to gross $25M in its second weekend, Zach Creggers‘ Weapons isn’t showing any signs of slowing down, whereas Sweeney’s Western tale might not even cross the million-dollar threshold upon its theatrical premiere.

Sydney Sweeney’s Americana Bombs Nationwide Amid Weapons’ Dominance

Despite debuting in 1100 theatres across the country, Americana is estimated to nab $840,000, which would bring its per-theatre average to $460, earning the movie a 16th-place finish. In comparison, Weapons has continued WB’s momentum when it comes to original movies, and other features, including Freakier Friday, and Nobody 2, are also doing pretty respectable.

Although...

Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga in Joker: Folie à Deux (2024)
Box Office Update: Weapons packing heat in second weekend, Nobody 2 does so-so
Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga in Joker: Folie à Deux (2024)
Remember a few months ago, when Joker: Folie à Deux and Mickey 17 bombed, and everyone thought Warner Bros. heads Pam Abdy and Mike De Luca were on the verge of being fired? Funny how a run of hit movies can change things. In recent weeks, risky bets like A Minecraft Movie, Sinners, and Final Destination: Bloodlines have all cleaned up at the box office, while Superman soared—at least relatively speaking. Now, Abdy and De Luca are looking more like geniuses than executives on the chopping block, with their latest gamble, Weapons, proving to be another smash. After a strong opening weekend, the film is now tracking for only about a 43% drop in its second frame, which would give it a $25 million weekend—exactly what we predicted earlier this week.

Meanwhile, Deadline reveals Freakier Friday is also holding on better than expected, likely benefiting from decent word-of-mouth. It’s...

Khalani Simon-Barrow and Luke Speakman in Weapons (2025)
Weapons heads for second straight No. 1 with $26 million weekend
Khalani Simon-Barrow and Luke Speakman in Weapons (2025)
Warner Bros./New Line’s Weapons is poised to repeat at No. 1 with an estimated $26 million second weekend, reflecting about a 40% drop from its $43.5 million debut and lifting the domestic total to roughly $88 million. Weekend rankings also show Disney’s Freakier Friday holding in second with about $14.2 million and Universal’s Nobody 2 opening in third around $9.4 million. The studio’s streak remains notable: Weapons followed a run of six straight $40 million-plus openings, with current estimates keeping the film on pace for the $100 million domestic club.

The sophomore frame underscores how the film is playing with audiences after a strong launch. Final opening figures were confirmed at $43.5 million, and weekday turnout pushed first-week domestic grosses to about $64 million before heading into this weekend. Early audience polling indicated an A– mark on CinemaScore, unusual for a late-summer horror release and a hint of staying power that helped narrow the second-weekend dip.

‘Weapons’ Stays Atop Box Office With Strong $26 Million Weekend
Image
Thanks to rave word-of-mouth from critics and audiences, Warner Bros./New Line’s “Weapons” is holding strong in its second weekend at the box office with $24 million.

That’s a 40% drop from the film’s impressive $43.5 million opening and, should it hold, give the film an $88 million two-weekend domestic total. Last weekend, “Weapons” made Warner Bros. the first studio ever to have $40 million-plus openings on six consecutive wide theatrical releases, and now the film is in prime position to join the likes of “Final Destination: Bloodlines” and “F1” in the $100 million-plus club.

Mark it down as a breakthrough sophomore title for director Zach Cregger, who first made a name for himself with the modestly successful but critically praised 2022 horror film “Barbarian.” He is next set to direct a reboot film for the “Resident Evil” franchise.

Meanwhile, Disney’s “Freakier Friday” is holding decently with a $14.2 million second weekend, roughly a 50% drop from its $28.5 million opening.

'Nobody’s Showing Up for Bob Odenkirk’s Action Sequel While ‘Weapons’ Continues to Wallop Competition
Image
Despite competition from the new release Nobody 2, director Zach Cregger’s horror hit Weapons is poised to retain its box office crown for the second weekend in a row. It didn’t drop like most other horror films, although it didn’t quite perform to the level of Jordan Peele’s Get Out or Ryan Coogler’s Sinners, either. Those movies made $33 million and $48 million in their respective opening weekends, and dropped by 15% and 5% in their sophomore frames. Weapons, on the other hand, grossed a fantastic $43 million last weekend, and is currently looking at a second-weekend drop of 43%.

It made around $7.5 million on its second Friday, as it heads towards a $25 million haul this weekend. This will be enough for it to hold on to its number one spot, after a tremendous opening week during which it cracked the $100 million mark worldwide. By Sunday, Weapons’ running domestic haul will have passed the $85 million mark,...

Box Office: ‘Weapons’ Still in Control of No. 1, ‘Nobody 2’ Opening in Third
Image
“Weapons” is still running around on top of box office charts in its second weekend, as Universal’s action sequel “Nobody 2” looks to debut in third place.

The Bob Odenkirk-led “Nobody 2” beat into $3.8 million across Friday and preview screenings from 3,260 locations. That’s a notch above its 2021 predecessor’s $2.5 million opening day, though that film debuted in a pandemic-hobbled domestic landscape as Covid vaccines were only beginning to roll out to the public.

The R-rated “Nobody 2” now looks on track for an opening weekend of $9.4 million, falling a touch behind pre-weekend projections for a bow north of $10 million. Even with reviews being about as good as they were for the first “Nobody” and audience survey firm CinemaScore polling a positive “B+” grade among ticketbuyers, that good reception isn’t translating to breakout sequel numbers. But at a production cost of $25 million (an uptick from $16 million on...

Freaky Friday Director Addresses the Cult Classic's Problematic Asian Representation
Image
In 2003, Mark Waters directed the future cult classic Freaky Friday. Now, 22 years later, Mark Waters is ready to acknowledge the Disney movie's one major criticism: the problematic Asian representation.

In a wide-ranging interview with Variety, Waters shared that he was "fully aware that [the asian representation] was over the top, and not in the way that I was trying to insult or make fun of any group." He explained, "We’re doing this just to be absurd. Rosalind Chao [(Pei-Pei)] is a friend and she was in on the joke. But stepping back from it, of course it’s absolutely absurd but not in a way that is mean-spirited. Not from my perspective, nor do I think most people who watch the movie think of as being mean-spirited."

In Freaky Friday, the main protagonists — mother Tess (Jamie Lee Curtis) and daughter Anna (Lindsay Lohan) — swap bodies after cracking open some fortune cookies given to...

27 Years Later, Dennis Quaid's 87% Rotten Tomatoes Critical Darling Is Back in the Streaming Charts
Image
Last weekend, the box office was graced by the introduction of two high-profile new entries, each entirely different from the other. Alongside director Zach Cregger’s new horror film, Weapons, Freakier Friday, Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis' long-awaited sequel to the beloved 2003 comedy, also made its opening splash, although it fell short of the former in total earnings. Nevertheless, the pair finished in positions #1 and #2 in the domestic rankings, even outperforming the latest MCU entry, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, which finished in position #3.

Thanks to the release of Freakier Friday, another of Lohan's classic family-friendly flicks is back in the streaming charts, one that saw the actress play a pair of twins, 27 years before Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan made it popular again. The film is 1998's The Parent Trap, which saw Lohan star alongside Dennis Quaid and Natasha Richardson. As of August 10, 2025,The Parent Trap is...

Original Freaky Friday Director Was Not Asked to Do the Sequel: 'I Was Not Invited to the Party'
Image
Freaky Friday premiered in 2003, starring Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis as a mother-daughter duo who switched bodies. Over two decades later, they switched again on Freakier Friday.

While both returned for the sequel, alongside several stars from the original, original director Mark Waters was not a part of it. Instead, the sequel has Nisha Ganatra at the helm, with Jordan Weiss penning the script. In a new interview with Variety, Waters admitted he is supportive of the sequel but that he wasn't invited to direct.

Waters admitted he never developed his own sequel to 2003's Freaky Friday, adding he wanted to be involved. "Yeah, unfortunately, I was not invited to the party. I did raise my hand and say I’d love to be involved somehow, even in a kind of godfather aspect or executive producer. But I was not extended an invitation."

He continued, "I’m very supportive...

Liam Neeson Comedy Reboot Hits $60M Box Office Milestone in 2 Weeks
Image
The Naked Gun has passed a major box office milestone after just two full weeks in theaters. The new movie is a legacy sequel to the comedy trilogy of the same name and stars Liam Neeson as Frank Drebin Jr., the son of Leslie Nielsen's original character, Frank Drebin.

The Naked Gun release kicked off on August 1 with a middling $16.5 million debut that saw it premiere at No. 3 behind the fellow new release The Bad Guys 2 at No. 2 and Marvel's The Fantastic Four: First Steps at No. 1. Nevertheless, the comedy quickly rose to become Liam Neeson's highest-grossing movie of the decade.

Per The Numbers, at the end of its 14th day in theaters, The Naked Gun reached a cumulative global box office total of $60.6 million, comprising $37.2 million at the domestic box office and $23.4 million from international markets. This makes it the 35th movie of the year to pass the $60 million milestone worldwide.

‘Weapons’ reloads for another box-office win, ‘Nobody 2’ shoots blanks
Image
The dog days of summer have settled in at the box office, and this weekend’s returns are expected to reflect the seasonal slowdown. Warner Bros.’ horror-thriller Weapons, which surprised with a strong $43.5 million debut last weekend, is on track to hold its lead, with a second weekend gross projected at $25 million. Supported by stellar reviews, an A-minus CinemaScore, and an expansion to 3,450 theaters, Weapons is expected to pass the $90 million domestic milestone by Sunday, having already surpassed $100 million worldwide.

Meanwhile, Universal’s action sequel Nobody 2, a follow-up to the 2021 sleeper hit starring Bob Odenkirk, is expected to make a modest splash with an opening between $9 million and $12 million. By comparison, the original Nobody debuted with $6.8 million during the pandemic's early recovery phase and went on to gross $27.5 million domestically. This time, Odenkirk’s Hutch Mansell is drawn back into his violent past after stopping a home invasion — igniting...

'Freaky Friday' Director Reacts to Not Being Invited to Work on the Sequel

'Freaky Friday's Og Director Unpacks Sequel Snub
Image
Amid the success of Freaky Friday’s Disney sequel, which saw the reappearance of many fan-favorites, fans may have noticed that a major player from the original film didn't return. That person is Mark Waters, who directed the 2003 movie, scoring a major career breakthrough and placing him in the limelight, as well as leading to similar hits: Mean Girls and Mr. Popper’s Penguins. Unfortunately, despite Waters’ pivotal role in Freaky Friday, he was snubbed from the 2025 sequel, which he recently discussed, while still maintaining his support for the film.

Freakier Friday was theatrically released on August 8, 2025, following a July premiere in LA. Disney initially announced the production in May 2023 with Elyse Hollander writing, while Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan were set to reprise their rolesas Tess and Anna Coleman, respectively. However, at the time, Waters wasn’t “invited to the party” as he confirmed this in an interview, saying:

‘Freaky Friday’ Director on the Film’s Legacy and Not Being Invited Back for the Sequel: ‘I Did Raise My Hand… It Would’ve Been Nice to Be Involved’
Image
Friday remains a beloved weekday thanks to the box office success of Disney’s sequel “Freakier Friday,” which reunites stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan for the first time since the 2003 “Freaky Friday.” The new film, written by Jordan Weiss and directed by Nisha Ganatra, has been praised for bringing a new take to the story while honoring the original. Fans have been particularly pleased to see so many actors returning for the sequel more than 20 years later. That includes not only the leads but actors like Chad Michael Murray, Stephen Tobolowsky and even Ryan Malgarini, who has since retired from acting but returned to reprise his role as Curtis’ son.

One person who did not return is Mark Waters, who scored a major career breakthrough after directing the 2003 version. Waters has fond memories of making the film, which helped put him on the map. While the director earned...

Avengers: Endgame Is Now an Unexpected Streaming Hit
Image
Marvel Studios' Avengers: Endgame continues to find success six years after its theatrical release. The culmination of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's Infinity Saga has unexpectedly returned to the streaming charts.

According to FlixPatrol, as of Aug. 15, Avengers: Endgame is ranked No. 7 on Disney+'s Top 10 Movies Worldwide list. The MCU movie's return to the streaming chart is a bit surprising. However, fans could simply be rewatching to get them hyped for its upcoming sequel, Avengers: Doomsday, which is currently filming and arrives in theaters in December 2026. Endgame does have a long way to go, though, if it wants to climb further up the streaming chart, with several beloved Disney movies currently ahead of it, including The Princess and the Frog, The Incredibles duology, and two fan-favorite Lindsay Lohan movies — The Parent Trap and Freaky Friday. The latter has been holding strong in the top spot for weeks now, as subscribers...

Streaming Platform Just Got a Game-Changing Update That Will Transform How You Watch Live Sports
Image
When it comes to VODplatforms, Prime Video is usually the first that comes to mind, but there’s another major digital release streamer that just got a huge update. Rivaling Prime Video in the VOD department is Fandango at Home, which also benefits from being the primary third-party source of ticket purchases in movie theaters. The streamer has now announced that, in addition to being able to rent and own movies on Fandango at Home, the service has also added pay-per-view capabilities and the ability to purchase cable TV on demand. Pay-per-view prices are expected to be the same as those charged by the source, and it remains unclear what the price point will be for cable TV. Still, this is a big win for Fandango, which is opening its doors to a much wider audience.

Fandango also released an official statement on the expansion, saying that “This strategic move...

Watch Out ‘Mean Girls,’ It Seems Oct. 3 Is Now Taylor Swift’s Day
Image
On Oct. 3, Taylor Swift asked me what day it was and I said…uhhh Mean Girls Day? Album release day?

For the past two decades, Oct. 3 has always been unofficially known as Mean Girls Day, referencing the iconic 2004 film starring Lindsay Lohan. However, Swift has decided to switch things up.

The pop superstar revealed Wednesday that her 12th album, The Life of a Showgirl, will also be released Oct. 3 — essentially claiming that day as her own this year. But she has a good reason.

The Grammy winners shared on a recent episode of the New Heights podcast, hosted by her boyfriend, Travis Kelce, and his brother, Jason Kelce, that the album’s release date, 10/3, adds up to 13, which has famously been Swift’s lucky number as she was born on Dec. 13, 1989.

“[It’s] never not annoying,” the “Cruel Summer” singer joked, regarding her references to the number 13 throughout her music career. “Always...

Khalani Simon-Barrow and Luke Speakman in Weapons (2025)
US Box Office Predictions: Weapons to top another weekend; Nobody 2 aims to best first film’s opening
Khalani Simon-Barrow and Luke Speakman in Weapons (2025)
After winning the box office battle against Freakier Friday last weekend, Weapons is poised to dominate again—possibly for the rest of the summer, with little major competition ahead. Normally, horror films drop 60% or more in their second weekend, but word of mouth on Weapons has been phenomenal, and midweek business has been strong. As a result, the film should easily top $25 million in its sophomore frame—potentially more.

The real battle this weekend looks to be for second place, with both Freakier Friday and Nobody 2 vying for position. Family audiences should keep Disney’s sequel in second with around $14 million, while Nobody 2 is likely to open in third with $10–12 million, which is right in line with Universal’s expectations.

While that opening might seem modest, it’s worth remembering that the first Nobody debuted to just $6.8 million in 2021 during the pandemic. It ultimately grossed $27 million domestically, but...

‘Wednesday’ Skyrockets to No. 1 on Streaming Top 10 — Netflix’s 10th Straight Week in the Top Spot | Chart
Image
The Samba TV Wrap report has spent all summer highlighting Netflix’s successes. This week, the streaming giant found a way to top itself.

“Wednesday,” one of Netflix’s all-time biggest hits, returned on Aug. 6. Following nearly three years between seasons, audiences were excited to see Jenna Ortega come back as the titular creepy, kooky, mysterious and spooky Addams family character. With 2.7 million U.S. households watching the first episode in the first five days it was available, it was more than enough to put the show at the top of the streaming chart this week.

It was the 10th consecutive week a Netflix title has held the top spot. It’s also one of seven Netflix entries this week, making it the second-straight week where the streamer has held seven of our Top 10 spots. With the second half of “Wednesday’s” second season coming on Sept. 3, all signs are...
