Well.. I am wondering if there will come a time, when Netflix movie will be more high quality?
It seems to me most of the movies made are made to have it as a backdrop while cooking, which is too bad. Probably we are to blame cause we watch them and create demand.
This one in particular is actually a nice plot with a lot of potential due to popular romanticised reality of foreigners buying 1 euro houses in Italia, but it is again made so cheesy and corny and lacks depth or quality acting. Feels very superficial. Don't get me wrong, it still is a nice backdrop, mostly due to surroundings and location, but otherwise lacks depth heavily. It is too bad, cause all these films seem half-done, and like my parents used to tell me my whole life, getting things half done is worse than not doing them. I must agree.

Step into Italy with warm scenic beauty, golden sunshine, and charming Edwardian-era architecture. La Dolce Villa is the most relaxing escape you can indulge in right now-it's sweet, tender, and as aromatic as an authentic Italian café.
I have to appreciate the film's underlying social message about Italian village properties being auctioned for just one euro. It adds a layer of depth to the story, making it more than just a picturesque getaway.
Story-wise, it's fine, but I really admire the craftsmanship and construction makeover that went into bringing the old villa back to life. Imagine giving a story to those satisfying room makeover videos on youtube. If you're looking for a decent film to enjoy while preparing a cozy meal, this is it.
I'll go with a 7/10 for this one-it's like a warm hug.

Kinda feel like they just follow a recipe of how to make a romantic comedy. It's a nice movie, but maybe too many stereotypes of what could be a romantic comedy. Like, they could be more subtle.
Also, do they have issues with the camera? Why are some can characters shaded in some scenes? Like the grandmas waving? They didn't see that in post-editing?
At least, you see beautiful sceneries of Italy. It made me want to buy one house for 1 euro and move there today.
Italy definitely has the vibe they portray.
Overall, it is a good movie to pass the time on Valentine's day with your significant other.

Overall, it was a sweet family movie. First of all cinematography is very good, like all Italian movies it makes you fall in love with Italy. The main focus in this movie for me was the relationship between father and daughter, I love how they showed their dynamics and the development of their relationship and trust between them during the movie. The movie looks like the very good advertisement for Italy, its food and people, they really focused on those aspects. This is movie is also about the second love story in the middle ages, also Giovanni and Olivia were soo cute together such a cute chemistry between them.
Easy film to watch with spectacular scenery. The cast gelled well and although a little formulaic the story ran well. Nice to hear the native Italian tongue in amongst the English too.
Scott Foley carries the main lead well and Violante Placido is perfect in her role as town mayor. Some scenes are poignant, without too much schmaltz and there are essences of comedy thrown in too, with the three ladies who sit in the town square. But it is the scenery that really steals the show and makes the movie very watchable.
I would definitely watch this film again and would put it in my "easy watching" category.

From the trailer you can already tell the story and feeling you will get from this movie. It is a cute charming movie for the whole 'familia'. Sure, with a foreseeable storyline and few bumps on the path of realism or logic, but overall the story checks out. The characters and actors fit quite well and manage to attract interest, they are a bit cliché - ok a lot of cliché, still, they are charming. This feels like a short and sweet Italian vacation at the countryside. Dont watch if you feel already grumpy before watching - let the grumpy character be the mysterious man that left the villa. This is a movie to relax and feel a bit of dolce far niente. And I typically avoid spoilers in my reviews at all cost but... here I will make a tiny exception to the rule: make sure to have a warm pizza ready for the end of this cute movie. Buon appetito!
Pretty formulaic Hallmark movie kind of vibe, but it's jolly to watch on a relaxing day. If you familiar with rom-coms, then you can pretty well predict where this story goes, there aren't much surprises. At the same time, the movie is rightly phased and doesn't make you to feel bored.
All the lead actors, Scott Foley, Violante Placido, Maia Reficco were good, and fit in pretty well in this Rom-Com. They are well complimented by the Italian supporting actors.
Location and cinematography are excellent, and landscape can be counted as an actor as well, so lively and refreshing.
Delivered without fail, perhaps even better than expected. If you are a familiar rom-com viewer, then this one will NOT fail you.

The Italians welcome and support productions, like this one, that advertise their place in the best way. Landscapes, Villages, Food, Warm human relationships, at their best. Foreign visitors, usually busy businessmen and cut off from the warmth of everyday life, finally find their love in the cinematic representation of a country's excellence and its people. As for the film, it was a pleasant and comforting entertainment that also included the whole recipe; the daughter with the worried-ready-for-love father, the local grandmothers at the fountain, the handsome young cook (Italian food and wine is a must) and the local beautiful Italian mayor available for love. I admit the Italians and bow to their timeless skill in attracting scripts that advertise their country in the best way. !!

Let's begin with Scott Foley, the lead actor. His performance is drier and more wooden than an old door in a clapped out one-euro Italian villa. He seems like he's in a hurry to catch a plane in every scene, so, trying to get through his lines as quickly as possible, with the only expression he can muster, that of a surprised deer in the headlights. Violante Placido, the stunning Italian actress that plays Eric's love interest, was woefully directed, and the same goes for Maia Reficco, who plays his daughter. They seem to be capable of much more.
The script and dialogue is painfully predictable, formulaic and cringefully cheesy. On more than once occasion, I blurted out the dialogue almost word-for-word just before it was delivered. Eric's (Scott Foley) character is underdeveloped, touching a bit on the hackneyed stereotype of the culturally insensitive and arrogant American abroad.
The pacing is all wrong, and never changes, always feeling hurried and never allowing time for any of the character's emotions to absorb, much like a commercial. This is especially ironic for a movie about leaving the big city behind for the slow paced life of the Italian countryside.
The warm organic beauty of the scenery and sets were the only thing that kept me from fast forwarding through the film.
This genre was done a hundreds types better 22 years ago by Diane Lane in 'Under The Tuscan Sun'.
Scott Foley should find another line of work.

Ok it's not perfect & never got above 8/10 - it spent most of the time at 6/10 but a couple of tear jerking scenes took it up to 8/10 bit overall it's a 7/10 at best
Great afternoon movie , romance , a tiny bit of comedy , a bit of will they won't they & then the inevitable obvious scene
Interesting sub plots to keep the story going
Was it a happy ever after ending ? - well you'll just have to watch it to see
What did I like about it? Farther daughter relationship , it was a film about the question what is success is it monetary or is it what's in your heart ? The scenery was beautiful who couldn't love Italy !?
Definitely worth a watch with low expectations, some scenes were too cheesy & predictable to make it a film you'd want to watch again & again
7/10 Pad. A.

Being Italian myself I was excited earlier this week seeing that Netflix was Releasing it. While the story has many holes in it, it did keep me very interested. Tuscany is so beautiful and it shows itself off throughout the film. A bit of a surprise ending worked well. The actresses playing the mayor and daughter were perfect for their parts. The Italian language spoken by all was perfect along with the closed captions. The script holes weren't a problem sine the story did keep me interested. I will probably watch it again soon just to enjoy the Tuscan scenery. My parents immigrated from Tuscany and I was lucky enough to visit there 3 years ago.
This movie follows the formula for romantic movie. Successful businessman moves to romantic place, is reluctant to get involved, wants to keep a safe distance, starts to like the place..... You know the drill. You can predict the story and ending within 20 minutes. Some acting is a bit wooden while some tend to overact, but overall not too bad.
End result is pretty fine. It's not a great movie, it's pretty average for the genre. It is good enough to spend 1 and 1/2 hour watching it without feeling you've wasted your time, even if you'll promptly forget the plot and will have no desire to watch it again.

I started watching this, but couldn't stomach seeing it to the end. I'm American living in Europe for 55 years. I speak Italian and other languages, and visit Italy frequently. This movie is typical naive American cliché kitsch. The dialogue is full of American "New Speak" slang and cultural references that hardly anyone in Italy understands - I have trouble with it too. The protagonist is not there to admire and embrace millennia of culture, but rather, to spread the American obsession with turning everything into a business enterprise. I can't imagine any European giving this movie the thumbs-up. I can't.

As it is being touted as #1 choice on Netflix, and we had been bummed by choosing "Our Little Secret" on Valentine's Day (see my review elsewhere) we decided to give this movie a try in replacement of a romantic, pleasurable little movie. And we weren't disappointed: It is a cute little movie, not only romantic, but also having Tuscany play a great character in it (It was actually filmed in Italy.) The actors are mostly obscure, with the exception of Scott Foley, who plays the middle-aged hottie with ease. The plot is pleasant, with no tortuous twists to disturb our pleasant visit to the Italian countryside. The only discordant note is having Eric's daughter (Maia Reffico) play a 24-old girl who had been bouncing around Italy babysitting, incongruously deciding to spend her inheritance to buy and restore a house... not believable!
The plot proceeds smoothly to lead all characters (except one) to a happy place, as a good formula romantic movie should.
The director (Mark Waters) does better here than in a recent movie of his (the dubious "Mother of the Bride") so all ends well. It won't win any Oscars, but is good enough.

Easy watching romance movie - food, l'amore, familia, beautiful Italian countryside - really enjoyed it and pretty solidly plotted too which they aren't always - only thing not to like was the American renovation efforts. Eric the Dad's contribution was to sit at his computer for 80 days - he ticked them off on a chart, that was all he got off his bum to do, never saw him lift a finger for the reno - just once feebly sawed at a pipe for 30 seconds and then gave up. Daughter's supposed to be keen on the huge Italian garden, wants to get into sustainability - all we saw her do was transplant store bought pots into a small raised bed suitable for a New York balcony - with a massive space around going to waste, laid to lawn. Didn't see her doing any actual renovating either, all she did was choose a tile.
Is it directors, writers or what? They haven't got a clue what hard graft looks like. Much more comfortable with tripping off to Rome to be an interior designer (and that would be a stretch on what we saw).
Still very enjoyable though - just wish the main two hadn't been so lazy/useless - how hard is it to show a reno like it is?

Clearly inspired by Under the Tuscan Sun, La Dolce Villa borrows several plot points and even its soundtrack evokes the earlier film.
The story follows a father (Scott Foley) who travels to Italy to convince his daughter (Maia Reficco) not to buy a Tuscan villa for a dollar, but both end up finding much more in a beautiful Italian town. With a sweet and light Hallmark-style aesthetic, the film relies more on its scenic beauty than on its script or characters, which are underdeveloped and filled with clichés.
The motivations and obstacles are handled with little depth. The romance is barely noticeable-Eric and Francesca have little chemistry, and their relationship never manages to be engaging. Yet, despite these flaws and lack of depth, La Dolce Villa remains enjoyable to watch, offering visual appeal and a light story with minimal emotional weight.

Eric drops everything and rushes off to stop his daughter, Olivia, from buying a villa in a small Italian village. When he cannot convince her otherwise, they embark on an unexpected journey that brings them closer together and helps Eric find love again.
This Netflix-exclusive romcom is what should be expected. The story is predictable and straightforward. With a runtime of one hour and thirty-nine minutes, that movie does not require a lot of thought or attention but will provide you with some laughs, feels, and entertainment. Stream it if you are in the mood for a romantic comedy and a home makeover show set in Italy.

Standard 2025 Netflix movie with a script that has no salt and pepper, with cringe dialogues and with actors that seem to be embarassed that are playing. The only reason to watch it is to get a bit of the italian feel and to enjoy some beautiful tuscan landscapes.
This guy goes to Italy to convince his daughter to not buy an old villa. She buys the villa, he stays to help, giving up his business, falls for a nice italian lady and probably stays there happy ever after. Couldn't make it until the end because - see the title of the review. The acting and dialog made this film impossible to watch, crazy how bad they all are.
If you want 90 minutes of brain death go for it.

I had to turn it off in the middle, because I got stomach pain from all the predictable dialogues and cheesy romantic scenes. I think Scott Foley might be the worst american actor I've ever seen.
And that script! A mediocre elementary school kid could write a more realistic and less predictable story. What disappointed me the most was the poor renovation work' they did, what initially attracted me to watch the movie. All they did was finding hidden gems and choosing tiles! Oh and potting bought plants in raised beds for sustainability, wtf.
I really think I've never seen a movie that bad. Please trust me and don't watch that 99 min of painful bs.

7.5 stars.
Although this is not in my top tier favorites for romances and such, it is akin to most Hallmark movies and they did a good job on this one.
The Italian landscape was breathtaking, and the renovations and transformation of the villa was fun to watch. For anyone who loves real estate and renovating old classic buildings, you'll probably love this film for that aspect alone.
The romance was nice, the interactions between the different characters was genuine and rich. There are a few budding relationships. I think the lead female mayor and love interest for the lead male is quite alluring. She has a simplistic beauty, a girl-next-door vibe.
Most of the dialogue flowed nicely, and there is a decent amount of Italian spoken, so we rely on subtitles for some of it, but not too much as to discourage people who don't enjoy subtitles. Personally, I tolerate them, but I don't prefer them. So take it from me it was just about at the threshold of excess, but not quite.
This is definitely a good one-time watch. Will I watch this again in the future? Probably in about 5 to 10 years. Enjoy.

There are some qualities that put this above the average filmed in Europe Netflix rom com. We have all seen this cheap villas in Italy for sale on the news. So it is interesting to see what happens if someone buys one. There is a fantasy element to the way things play out. The interactions with the locals is pleasant. Everyone is so fluent in English. Also the renovation seems so easily done. The scenery was ok and the Villa wasn't that great but what do you expect for a euro anyway. There is a little plausible crisis at the end that is quite cleverly solved.
I like the Italian actress she was classy looking and her English was easy to understand. Couple of flaws. Scott Foley could have done without the grizzly beard. The daughter was annoying and bratty after taking the $$ from her father she still had this attitude. The results of the makeover are glossed over to quickly.

So, Netflix raised our subscription price to make movies like THIS?!
The script felt like it was written by AI. Pacing was off and characters just spawn out of nowhere when it's convenient to the plot.
I thought Scott Foley was a decent actor in Scandal, but he's horrible in this. As are all the other actors. The Father daughter relationship feels disingenuous. The daughter is what you'd get if you asked ChatGPT to write a gen-z character.
The storyline had potential, but it ended up feeling like a ripoff of Under the Tuscan Sun, except 1000x worse. When I finished watching Under the Tuscan Sun, it felt like a lesson on life and I was truly inspired. This movie left me feeling nothing. When I watch a movie that's based in another country, I expect to be transported to that place. This movie did not do that for me.
