O Abhagi (2024) is a haunting social drama set in 1970s rural Bengal, adapting Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's Abhagir Swargo. Rafiath Rashid Mithila delivers a raw, award-winning performance as Abhagi, a downtrodden lower-caste woman yearning for a dignified, fire-lit death-only to be denied due to caste discrimination . Director Anirban Chakraborty expands the original tale with vivid visuals, caste critique, and a melancholic score, though added subplots slightly dilute its emotional quotient. In under 100 words: a powerful, moving film anchored by Mithila's superb lead role-rough edges and all, it's a poignant exploration of dignity, death, and social injustice.
