Weird and woeful.

English teacher Claire starts to hear a humming noise, a sound that nobody else can hear. The hum starts to affect her life, she finds some comfort when a student, Kyle, also hears the same noise, the pair explore the noise, and are drawn to a group.

I've heaped praise on the drama output of both ITV and The BBC during 2024, both organisations have put out some wonderful content. This however, this is the low point, a total dud.

Excruciatingly slow to start, it should have been half the running time, the only time the series offers anything, is in the third episode, which I enjoyed. Episode four is truly one of the most painfully, terrible things I've ever watched, there are no words for how awful it is.

We get such a feeble explanation, we don't even get to glimpse the sound, we should have been given the hum very early on, it made it impossible to empathise with Claire. There's weird, and then there's plain old incomprehensible, and this I'm afraid is that, it leaves the viewer cold.

It's diversity on steroids, as you'd expect, The BBC's world view on things continues to patronise.

Some decent performances however, Amr Waked stands out, the guy has some real presence.

Avoid.

4/10.

The sound of 6 out of 10

While there's nothing particularly deep here, there are some strong and very measured performances. It did make me think about things as I was watching it and it certainly wasn't predictable. The conclusion was also reasonably satisfying.

Rebecca Hall was very believable as Claire. I also particularly liked the performance of Amr Waked as Omar.

Without giving any spoilers, I think it is possible to say this is "about" people who are suffering (hearing the "hum" that most cannot) and trying to find someone who can help them. It strikes me it is also "about" the way the brain can construct both helpful and unhelpful explanations.

Well worth a watch, so long as you're not looking for anything deep and meaningful. (I enjoyed this enough to binge watch it last night.)

Really not worth your time

It's hard to put this show into words. It doesn't seem to know what it wants to be, part psychological drama, part sci-fi, part cult thriller, yet no real substance at all.

The acting has been criticised on other reviews, but I don't feel the acting is the problem. It's everything else. It's a real "meh" progrramme that is just disjointed, flat and bland. I really don't get what it was trying to do. There is potential in the concept which is interesting, they could have made a good sci-fi show, or an apocalyptic type show, or they could have just focused on the cult angle and made a good thriller there. Yet you don't feel like you get to the bottom of any of that.

Somehow I've made it through all four episodes just to try and see what in the world was actually going on, and it really was not worth bothering with. I would rather have spent the 3 hours waiting for a train.

An engaging watch!

The premise of Listeners - people who can hear a mysterious low humming sound - might feel familiar, but this drama finds a way to make it feel fresh. Rather than focusing on the mystery of the hum itself, Listeners takes a deeper, more emotional approach, exploring how this strange phenomenon changes the lives of those who hear it.

What really works is how the story leans into the human side of the concept. It's not just about the sound; it's about what it does to people, which makes it far more engaging than you might expect.

The acting is solid, with performances that draw you in without overplaying the drama. And the sound design is just subtle enough to make the hum feel like another character in the story, ever-present and unsettling.

Listeners strikes a balance between eerie and intimate, making it more than just another mystery. It's a thought-provoking exploration of how the unexplainable can shape our lives - and well worth a watch.

Lordy, what rubbish

I have a keen eye for drama. Usually in the first 15 minutes I can work out the quality. This one took me all of 5 minutes. Rebecca Hall is getting far too many duds to be now considered a reliable actress.

As soon as the woke-ness, over-acting and general typical suburbia came to the fore I knew there is only one way this is gonna go, and I wasn't wrong.

Unbelievably predictable the drama offers nothing. BBC has lost its way. Commissioning far too many of these humdrum, no-one will watch dramas which sink without trace.

Where is the grittiness, the pushing of the tension boundaries, the realism in delivery? All is absent. Nothing to see here. Move on.

Thought-provoking and eerie

Short series about a woman who starts hearing a sound no one else around her appears to be able to hear, and how it deeply affects her public and personal life - shifting her allegiances and tearing holes in her reality.

Rebecca Hall puts in a great performance, and there are some nice details, too - both in cinematography and not least the sound design.

I was mainly drawn to The Listeners by its title and theme, and while the storyline doesn't always evolve in a pleasant way, I did find it interesting in relation to subjective experiences of life and the impact they can have on our relationships to others - both in terms of closeness and alienation.

The eerie aspect is to do with the fact that hearing is subjective - no one essentially experiences the world in the same way - and how this opens up questions around empathy, trust, understanding, support, exploitation, and mental health.

Background noise

Having read the synopsis for this before starting to watch it I thought this would be really interesting. The overall rating for this was around 5/10, so it had very mixed reviews.

The idea for the story is good. The story starts off quite well and had potential. Unfortunately it just got really weird and creepy.

This is ok to have on in the background but not to waste four hours of your life.

The story had too many plot holes and just got more irritating the more you watched.

Overall it's a poor storyline with poor script, dialogue and acting.

Such a shame because this story could have been so much better. A wasted opportunity.

Beautiful, smart study of discontent

This show is an extremely well observed, nuanced portrayal of someone who feels lost and is seeking a different way of life. Suffocated by her choices, Claire (played by the exceptionally talented Rebecca Hall) begins hearing a sound she can't escape while living a life defined by her role as a teacher and mother.

The 'hum' leads her down a dark path, away from those she loves to find connection elsewhere, amongst other lost people struggling to cope in mainstream society. All in all I found this a very poignant study that brings up questions around mental illness, reality, convention and the drive that makes someone abandon those they love.

Missing the point?

I think this was possibly about awakening/consciousness which, judging by some of the comments left here, is sadly missing in a lot of people's lives and they can sadly only relate to conventional dramas, pc plod, crime etc. I think there were a lot of plot holes/nonsense like the police shooting towards the end and agree about over-reactions of family members mentioned in other reviews. Not nearly as bad as I was expecting from some of the reviews - thanks for lowering my expectations! Seems I need to add another 100 odd characters to post this review so just filling it up with some random words.

Weird in a good way. Maybe.

This is certainly an odd little series, kind of like the ever present hum. It doesn't matter if you can hear the annoying hum or not, its repercussions are far reaching.

I enjoyed this. It had a few strands to lead you down, but not so many to confuse. It's creepy but not too overbearing and I liked the pacing.

What I liked most about this, was the focus on the people and all of their relationships. How something invisible, lurking in the background, growing ever more present, can tear reality apart.

Is it a little self indulgent? Absolutely.

Is it beautiful to watch? Absolutely.

Is the hum real? Now that would be telling!

Started off mildly interesting and went rapidly downhill

Was hoping this would be some kind of Sci-fi/urban legend type of plot. So many people around the world report hearing a low hum I thought it might be an interesting story around it. I was irritated by a low level night time humming sound up until recently. Turned out to be from major roadworks over 4 miles away. Road works finished, humming has stopped and now I miss it. Strange how noise carries especially at night. I digress, Rebecca Hall plays a teacher who hears a humming noise. One of her pupils, a spotty hormonal teenage lad, also hears it. The inevitable happens and they form a very inappropriate relationship. It all gets a bit yuk from there onwards. Teacher loses her job, and her marriage as a result. Good. Gave me the collywobbles just thinking about it. It all drags on for another couple of episodes, by then I hated all the characters so much I was hoping for a War of the Worlds style invasion to end it all. Skip ep 3, nothing happens, it could have been an email. It all looks beautiful though, as if IKEA/Next/Waitrose and The Guardian made a TV series it would be this. Don't waste your time watching, its really awful.

A portrait of people disconnected from one another.

You have to be in the right frame of mind to tackle this series. If you enjoy portraits of relationships and what binds people together as well as what splits them apart then this is for you. If you're looking for something that's more in the sci-fi/thriller genre then you have to look elsewhere. As for the acting, that other people have commented on, then all I can say is that it fits perfectly the directoral style. Rebecca Hall is an outstanding actor and plays the role she is given to perfection and so do the other actors. It's a slow but intriguing portrait of dysfunctional relationships and how they evolve. The plot device is intriguing but not really the central premise.

Seriously ?

Anybody giving this tripe praise have been sucked in for the wrong reasons, perfectly indicative of what the exceptionally poor plot is about . Rachel Hall , in my honest opinion , would normally be as sound as a row of houses , but this is utterly lamentable ? Turning tinnitus ( and yes I am being deliberately obtuse ) into a David Koresh love in is utterly absurd . The acting , in the first episode , by the whole ensemble is nothing short of bringing the whole " equity card " house of cards down upon the lot of them ! The irony being , part of the plot is watching a school piece of Am Dram . Don't waste your time on this . I can categorically state , that it won't win any gongs and it will be forgotten at the end of it's scheduled timings.

Beautiful

This series is beautifully shot and deserves your full attention. It's neither obvious nor linear and it's not sexual or sordid. The people criticising this show are no different to the characters doubting Claire in the story. Is it perfect or life-changing? Maybe not, but it's absolutely fascinating and the cinematography is absolutely stunning. From the title card to the abstract sequences, it's a thriller with a very subtle supernatural undertone. If you enjoyed The Leftovers or The OA this one is for you. There's a lot to chew on and it's worth a rewatch as well. It'll go down as a cult classic.

Complete and utter drivel

Don't waste your time with this complete and utter rubbish. The "plot" hardly develops at all. . Dull and plodding with a ludicrous final episode. I'm just sorry I wasted my time bearing with it in the hope it would develop into a worthwhile story. The acting is good at times although the actors struggle to make something out of the unimaginative script and overact to simulate their moments of "ecstacy". Can the BBC really not produce something better than this? I haven't read the book but perhaps the storyline works better in written form, I certainly hope so. I will be very wary of spending my time in future dramas such as this. Avoid.

The concept sounded interesting but no

To be fair, I quite enjoyed the first episode. I thought it was going to move into a sort of sci-fi but done well programme. It looked good, and the sound track was well put together but then it just fell off a cliff.

I started to have doubts with "the hum effect on my mental health", circling incredulity around whether the could be learned to love and any moment I expected the guitar to be got out with a few rounds of kum-by-ar.

There was definitely potential with the premise but it descended into a wallowing pit goodness only knows what. I couldn't take any more so bailed after two episodes - maybe it will have transformed in the last two but I doubt it.

Destined for the Blaze channel

This was hyped up by the media in advance and started off promisingly enough, although with the rather dodgy premise of an inappropriate teacher-pupil relationship.

I was intrigued, because for almost two years I also heard this kind of almost subsonic hum, which hardly anybody else could hear. In the end it seemed mst likely to have come from the seemingly never-ending contruction of a housing development over a mile away.

So episode one started off well enough, so much that I broke my usual rule against binge watching and went straight to episode 2 on the iPlayer. Then only a few minutes in, as soon as the cult was introduced its credibility plummeted off the scale. From being a seemingly intelligent and genuinely creepy drama, it instantly turned into the kind of rubbish consigned to Blaze TV alongside other insults to the intelligence such as pseudo-documentaries about Bigfoot and alien abduction.

I felt let down by the sheer waste of time and effort by all concerned, switching off after a few minutes of episode 2 and cancelling series record.

Do yourself a favour and avoid this rubbish at all costs.

Subtle, experimental drama

I sort of understand why many people don't like this. It is slow and absurd (but no more so than a Batman or Marvel film) and a lot of it depends on a sort of engagement with acting and the visual experience which is not mediated by spectacle or the usual viewer manipulation. Shooting on film makes an important difference I think - not only to the look of it (the colours are amazing, the choices of textures, subtly unnerving angles etc) but also perhaps in the way that space and movement are captured. There is something about how film captures matter and bodies and faces in space and time which is noticeably different to digital.

One gets the feeling that every directorial choice made here is beautifully done. The acting is often on the edge of uncomfortable theatricality (I think they were trying to do this with Disclaimer but it didn't work there) but just amazing too on a technical level. The colour palette - from clothes to the different spaces - is chosen with a painter's eye for contrasts and complementarity. I even kept looking at the hair cuts - the way the hair related to the ears (perhaps the stars of the show?) was something I have never had a director make me focus on before.

This reminded me of those surreal half forgotten one off TV dramas of the 1970s. Dramatic ideas and intentions just slightly too ambitious for TV, slightly pretentious, slightly Brechtian, but utterly hypnotic and confident too. Can't wait to see more from this director.
