Exclusive: Luis Gerardo Méndez and Adriana Paz are the latest to join the cast of the Netflix crime thriller Animals. Ben Affleck will star and direct with Kerry Washington, Steven Yeun and Gillian Anderson also on board. The plan is for the film to shoot in Los Angeles from a script by Connor McIntyre and Billy Ray.

Plot details are being kept under wraps other than the film revolving around a kidnapping.

Affleck, Matt Damon and Dani Bernfeld will produce through their Artists Equity banner, the artist-led studio founded by Affleck, Damon and Gerry Cardinale/RedBird Capital Partners. Brad Weston and Collin Creighton are also producing for Makeready, which developed the project in partnership with Fifth Season. Artists Equity’s Michael Joe, Kevin Halloran and Lucy Damon will serve as executive producers alongside Fifth Season.

For Mendez, the role is a huge get for one of Mexico’s biggest stars.

Netflix’s Technoboys is a comedic look at what happens when boy band dreams crash into midlife reality. It is messy but funny, and it takes a comedic look at the world of failed pop stars. For the first time, Luis Gerardo Méndez directs this Mexican comedy. He also stars as Alan, the desperate former lead singer of the hugely famous band Technoboys.

The movie takes place after the boy band era and is about Alan’s silly quest to find his lost teammates and get back to his former glory. Imagine a reunion in pop music that is less of a triumphant return and more of a funny train wreck. Alan finds out that the Technoboys have changed over the years: Babyface is now balding, Leo has become a mysterious teacher who seems to be able to teleport people, Freddy lives in a wheelchair, and Charlie has changed his name to Charlis.

I know I’m a bit of an oddball when it comes to comedies because it takes a lot for me to enjoy something that’s absurd for purely comedic purposes. This is not to say I have anything against the genre as such; it’s just that when things start to feel forced, I find myself getting lost. Technoboys is especially bad because it tries to deliver a somewhat heartfelt message through comedy, which it hopes comes across as “black comedy,” but only ends up giving us cringe-worthy nothing. I’m not the kind of person who easily tears a movie down; in fact, I’m sure everything has a purpose, but to me, Technoboys is just not it. Under the facade of being self-aware, the film goes full ham on its unironic inclusivity jokes and then hopes for us to believe that there’s an actual message in the whole thing.

September means networks are rolling out the good stuff following the summer blahs, and Netflix’s September offerings are no exception.

In addition to “The Perfect Couple” (see below) the streamer’s September offerings include “Emily in Paris” Season 4 Part 2, starring Lily Collins, as well as the downright charming “Nobody Wants This,” a unique rom-com starring millennial aughts TV gods Adam Brody and Kristen Bell — this one will be all over your social media feed, so make sure to binge it the second it drops.

On the movie front, in addition to a slew of old favorites, film fanatics’ best bet is likely “His Three Daughters,” a festival fave starring Elisabeth Olsen, Carrie Coon, and Natasha Lyonne. The film, about three very different siblings coming together in their father’s dying days, is expected to be a major awards contender after premiering at TIFF last year.
