For me, Sherlock Holmes should notice all the small details, leave nothing to chance, and in the end you get an explanation of how how Holmes' conclusion was made.
Sherlock & Daughter did try to do all these things, but it felt like the writing used for the series was in iteration 2, when it needed to be iterated 10 times to be proper Sherlock Holmes.
It was entertaining, well paced and all that. Impressive how they can nail costumes and environment to the time period. A nick pick would be a lack of a realistic amount of bystanders / crowds, due to what I only can imagine to be budget costs.

This series is taken from the Charles Veley books "Lucy James Mystery" series. Without credit of course. Anyone who has read all the books can't miss the almost total reproduction, with only trivial changes in names and plot changes. The plot line and circumstances that happen are all in the books, not in one book but from the series in total. There are two things missing in the show that the books excel at, the smartness in the writing, that's where the tv series missed the mark, it's also what makes the difference between a great show, and a just an ok show. Also missing in the show is that they really failed at showing the intellect of Sherlock Holmes, both in dialogue and in storyline, something the books excel at.

David Thewliss is a fantastic Sherlock, Surly, moody, cerebral and is generally true to the character we all know and love but without some of his (as yet) more destructive traits and quirks. Blue Hunt promises to be a match for his intelect, albeit more positive personality, the role is hers to mould and this first outing suggests she is doing just that.
The first episode promises good things, it grabs your attention, the costumes and settings are more than appropriate for the time period and the initial plot promises a longer running story with the opportunity to have episodal stories.
While some opinions are very negative, i fail to see why. Simply put there is nothing not likeable about this drama.

I was expecting to be mildly amused but I ended up enjoying quite a bit. I used to to dislike Thewlis a while back but I've learned to appreciate some of the characters he's played though his Holmes here is a bit smug and annoying. Of course he's dealing with some loss and personal issues so he gets a pass for now. The daughter which could have been a waste of character is actually charming and interesting. I've seen untold movies and shows featuring Holmes as well as read dozens of novels and this is quite refreshing though somewhat reminiscent of Miss Scarlett and the Duke ( another good show ). This could have had dumb, unfunny jokes but while not overly dramatic it's mercifully not whimsical or campy ( two things I abhor ). Anyway give it a shot and you too might be surprisingly entertained.

Sherlock & Daughter (Season 1, 2025, 7.3/10) is an attempt to reinterpret the Sherlock Holmes universe through the lens of family drama - an idea that sounds intriguing on paper but ultimately leaves mixed feelings. Introducing a sudden "daughter" into Holmes's life is a risky move, and while the series tries to balance classic elements with new themes, the execution doesn't always withstand the tension between them.
The show's main strength lies in its acting. David Thewlis is perfectly cast as Holmes: his portrayal of the detective is more weathered by time, more human, yet still retains the familiar cold sharpness. Blu Hunt as Amelia brings a refreshing energy: her character is independent, determined, and provides a good contrast to Sherlock's detached nature. Their dynamic is one of the main reasons the series manages to hold the viewer's interest.
Visually, the production is solid: London is depicted with atmosphere - without excessive gloss, tinged with a slight grayness and an attentive eye for period details. In terms of staging, the series looks robust and at times even impressive.
However, the main weakness lies in the script. Storylines often feel simplified: the mysteries are not particularly complex, some plot twists can be guessed long before the reveal, and themes that could have added emotional weight (such as generational conflict, trust, redemption) remain superficial hints rather than fully developed arcs. The pacing is also uneven: there are lively moments, but also noticeable lulls, especially in the middle of the season.
Conclusion: Sherlock & Daughter is a project with a good concept, solid performances, and a pleasant atmosphere, but it lacks depth in storytelling. It's more of an interesting side note in the world of Sherlock rather than a new pinnacle of the genre. As an easy evening watch, it works well enough. But if you're looking for the wit and complexity of the original Holmes, they are noticeably scarcer here.

One of the endless iterations of Sherlock Holmes, this one comes with a young woman who may be his daughter. The story begins with Holmes mid-drama, trying to save persons at risk while feeling that greater risk may come from his efforts. Meanwhile, a young woman makes her way from New York City to London, hoping to meet Holmes, whom she regards as a personal hero.
The atmosphere of London, 1896, is convincing, so the viewer can relax into the story, which wastes no time developing. Holmes (David Thewlis) and the young woman, Amelia Rojas (Blu Hunt), begin the series as fully-developed characters. Their back stories and personality traits are quickly established. Holmes is self-important and surly, though considerations might be made due to his current situation. Amelia is bright, cordial, and eager to learn. When she makes her way to 221B Baker Street, her hopes are briefly dashed, but she finds a place in Holmes' situation.
Before long, the two are working together to solve a case, but not as equals. And the disparate duo competes with Scotland Yard and the Pinkertons.
The production is filled with graphics, which some viewers may like; others may find them distracting.
But the first two episodes are enjoyable, and there is potential for much more enjoyment if the script allows the main characters to grow into a relationship of depth and warmth, if only grudgingly.

I'll admit my expectations for a CW production are somewhat reduced compared to HBO, but Sherlock & Daughter is definitely a decent show worth watching.
There are a lot of little things done properly that show care and attention to detail. The little animation showing when characters move about London is simple and effective.
The sets and scenes in London and environs are top notch, particularly when I compare them to Miss Scarlett. The set designers performed excellent work here.
Where there is a bit of a letdown is the reliance on coincidence to further the plot. Amelia is definitely too much of a Mary Sue but I've seen far worse. The acting, other than Thewlis, is average at best. The actors read their lines rather than saying them, but, again, for a CW production this is not unexpected.
All in all, I'm enjoying this and I'd recommend it. Must see television, perhaps not, but if you're a Sherlock Holmes fan, this is worth giving a shot.

I think most books, movies and some TV shows could be improved with maps. This one uses maps to illustrate old London and even a carriage chase. Well done.
I'm very forgiving with Sherlock stories. I was able to enjoy Sherlock and Elementary at the same time, but I can't stomach the Will Ferrell abomination. I suggest "Smarter Brother" and "Without a Clue" for a humorous Holmes. And I still miss Houdini and Doyle, but I digress.
This Holmes is older but still rude, egocentric and logical. I like that he does not accept the young American as his daughter ('You are not the first to make this claim") but finds her useful to investigate his case. Also we work with the same clues as Holmes. The main problem is extending the mystery across 8 episodes. The middle does bog down a bit. It would be better to have 2 four episode arcs. This is still an entertaining effort that I can recommend to a Holmes fan.

Preposterous, hammily acted, the script often clunky as well, but suspend serious critical faculties and what you've got is a compelling entertainment.
David Thewlis of course steals the acting prize as Sherlock, well matched by Dougray Scott's Moriarty. Blu Hunt's wide eyed enthusiasm as his maybe daughter added plenty of fire to the tale and Ivana Milicevic wasn't given enough to do but had an authoritative presence which rooted the scenes at the US Ambassador's residence. Fiona Glascott was too stilted to carry off the Lady Bracknell accent as intended but that aside all the actors did their best to season the ham.

This a complete miss. The Holmes character is so unlikeable and disrespectful that its hard to give him any credit.
The young actress playing his daughter is not a good representation of an indigenous woman from that era from the west coast of the US. She's more like a college student from the 90's-- the 1990's.
I had high hopes for this edition, but the casting of Holmes, the daughter, and some of the rest-- with the exception of some of the street characters, don't make sense.
The story involves an international crime syndicate, but its far-fetched and contrived. Its not really a mystery that it relates to Holmes somehow. Its simply not an enjoyable experience watching this Holmes bluster about.

An extremely exciting series in the Victorian era. Thewlis embodies Scherlock Holms very well and is ideal for this role. The other characters are also interestingly chosen and contribute to the entertainment. The series starts slowly with several puzzles arising and the tension increases from episode to episode (I've only seen 6 episodes). The focus is on the investigative work and uses various techniques (flashbacks, analyses, notes, etc.) which are clearly presented to the viewer. The character development is also nice to see and gives the series more depth. The locations and costumes are very realistic and are based on the settings of Holm's books, which creates a fantastic atmosphere. A very great series!
As a big Sherlock Holmes fan, I've always loved how smart he is and how he keeps his distance. To me, the original stories are great because he's all about logic, not feelings or family. So, when this new series introduces a daughter, it feels a bit off. It just doesn't seem like the Sherlock I know, the one who cares most about solving a good mystery.
It feels wrong because the original Holmes was so focused on his work, with no wife or kids. Adding a daughter brings in a lot of emotion, which I think changes what makes him unique. It might make him seem more like any other detective with family problems, instead of the special character he is. For me, the old stories are important, and big changes to the main character can be tough to accept.
But, I also see why the series creators did it. Giving Holmes a daughter adds something new. The idea of a "lonely genius" can feel old-fashioned now. A daughter pushes him to deal with feelings and relationships, which makes him seem more human. This can open up new kinds of stories, not just about solving crimes, but about family and what kind of parent Holmes would be. It helps keep the character fresh and interesting for today's audiences.
So, while my first thought is often "that's not the real Sherlock," I understand that a daughter can enliven and modernize him, making him more relatable and giving creators new ways to tell his story. It's a different take, but it does bring him to life for a new generation.

From the very beginning, I was not sold on this concept of Holmes working in tandem with a newly discovered daughter. It was not written well and the execution was clumsy. I was confused over how old she was supposed to be. In the story it seemed like she was supposed be in her late teens or early 20's, but the actress playing her is in her 30's. I think because the actress is very petite, they thought that she could pass for someone much younger but they kept showing closeups of her face and she clearly looked like an older woman. I feel that this hurt the story quite a bit because I think the story works if she's young and vulnerable, sort of over her head, though very bright and observant. Millie Bobby Brown did this perfectly in the Enola Holmes films, but Blu Hunt doesn't have the charm and appeal That's needed to pull this off. David Thewlis is quite good as Holmes but not as contemplative as I wished. The production is fine and the rest of the cast was very good.
It just work overall, and I lost interest.

As far as I can tell, the negative reviews come from those who get offended whenever a woman is one of the main characters, and not a love interest.
Sherlock Holmes is one of the most adapted characters in the world. With over 300 screen appearances with around 100 actors portraying the legendary character. Thewlis effortlessly steps into the iconic shoes of the worlds greatest detective, and captivates you from the first! Blu Hunt shows off her own talent and shows that she should, by all rights, be just as large of a house hold name as her co-star. Sherlock and Daughter (Though we must all make an effort forgive them for the title) is living up to be one of the best Sherlock Holmes adaptations of the 21st century, Thewlis is already proving himself to rightfully stand beside Rathbone, Brett, Cushing, Lee and Miller as one of the all time greats.

Sherlock & Daughter is a CW series created and written by Brandon Foley. The story begins with a young American girl named Amelia Rojas (Blu Hunt) who leaves her home in California after her mother's murder. Amelia makes her way across the pond to England to find her father Sherlock Holmes (David Twelis) who plays quite a convincing role as Doyle's fictional character. In all of the books, comics, movies and any other shows there was never any mention of Sherlock ever having a family or an affair with anyone to convince us that he would be a father. The series tries to solve a conspiracy that stretches to the highest government level and to solve Amelia's mother's murder. The fortunate part of the script was the smart use of clues, the maps, the costumes for the time period. The one thing I didn't like was the idea of American character being the daughter of the famous detective and they couldn't come up with a better title. We also learn Professor Moriarty (Dougray Scott) is spending time in prison and his son Michael Wylie (Joe Klocek) has become the leader of the red ribbon gang. Michael and Amelia do have a connection but doesn't pan out. The series is ok, nothing great, doesn't really compare to the movies but for CW I guess it fits. I would continue to watch it if there are going to future seasons.
"Sherlock & Daughter" offers a refreshing twist on the classic detective narrative, blending the sharp intellect of Sherlock Holmes with a new, emotional dimension through the introduction of a young woman who may be his daughter. The film balances mystery with personal discovery, offering clever plot developments and engaging character dynamics. While it respects the traditional spirit of Sherlock, it also modernizes the tone with warmth and humor. The chemistry between the leads adds depth, making the investigation more than just a puzzle-it's also a journey of connection and identity. A smart and enjoyable reimagining of the Holmes legacy.

Sherlock Holmes has been done again and again.
Hrs a fictional character penned by Arthur Conan Doyle.
We've had Basil, Jeremy, Benidict, Robert Downey, Johnny Lee etc etc.
Spin offs and so on etc.
Watson is the newest and this followed.
I'm liking this, well cannot get any worse than Watson ( insert laughing emoji here ).
Give it time but I think this will be better than all the rest apart from Elementary. Nothing can beat that exceptional quality of TV series.
Give it a chance but its not elementary or anything close
I mean Conan Doyle gave us a specialist in deduction and yes we need more.

Sherlock and Daughter is hard to review it's not massively original as most of the story's history is based around the amazing Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes memoirs. However the alterations and additions are handled with a deft touch and add to the narrative in a positive manner. The underlying plot that runs the full 8 episodes is complex, twisty and highly enjoyable with the inevitable final twist.
With a great cast and the clever plot devices, of using a map of London, some amazing scenery, and listing of plot points and observations, to move the story rapidly along, this is a clever, well acted Sherlock adaptation with its own spin and a interesting perspective. Well worth a watch.

Sherlock Holmes is a work of fiction which will always remain popular though right now it is very over used.
So along comes CW, throws in a daughter for the gender diversity, gives her agency and attitude of modern times, and throws in some historical customs and you have this.
This would have worked way better if they had embraced the time period or modernised to modern times instead we have this lite version of all these themes.
The script is pretty dire, and I think the actors would have been ok if they had a decent fun script instead this feels like one of those fictional movie/documentaries and incredibly boring.

A scattered review that feels very appropriate.
We're Sherlock fans for several decades and incarnations, film and tv. If this sounds like you, read on. If it doesn't, this is probably not the show or review for you.
Objections: What is up with the handheld camera during conversation scenes. There's no building of tension or other need for it. Wondering if this is filmed on an iPhone at this point. I'm getting seasick watching it.
The animations are very 1980 b movie quality. Think Allan Quartermain. I don't mind them and they seem to get marginally better. Just a little lower rent. The music choices are plain obvious in parts and ridiculous in others.
Points in favor: As for Sherlock - nice choice. Very capable. I'm reading about how others don't like the daughter's casting but I think it's also a good choice. And really, given the storyline, who else would you choose?
The storyline is decent and the pace keeps moving. It's an easy watch all told, I just wish the production quality and choices were less amateur.
The chop shop for buggies made us laugh.
All in all, it's a decently fun ride but will get tired if the producers don't spend some cash and please leave the Bourne Identity filming for where it's needed.

To paraphrase Sheldon ("Aishwarya Rai is a poor man's Madhuri Dixit") - Sherlock and Daughter is a poor man's ... any of numerous series that have Sherlock theme.
Some is maybe due to a not so big budget on which it was made, but mostly it's lack of any real spark characters were given, shoddy direction and editing, total shambles they made in casting and lack of creativity in writing.
David Thewlis is great actor, but he shines as a character actor, and would probably be a superb Sherlock if creators and writers had allowed him some leeway - and some, at least semi decent script. But alas, no, they kept their paint-by-numbers approach, which resulted in badly colored product.
Still, Thewlis is at least trying to do something with what's he been given, the rest of the cast is just irritable to watch.

David Thewlis makes an Amazing Sherlock Holmes, the Mystery is Actually Interesting, and Twisty and Turning enough to keep me Interested Week to Week. Blu Hunt is doing a great job as his protege/possible daughter. And, I was Pleasantly Surprised and Enjoyed the Great Dougray Scott as Moriarty. I love the way they took Watson out of the picture to make way for the character of Amelia, and While I Love CBS' "Watson" it is very refreshing to have an adaptation of Sherlock Holmes set in the original Time and Place of the original novels and short stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I do have the usual complaints about British and Canadian Productions, which the New Masters at the CW are currently working with. TOO SHORT SEASONS.

Although the story of Sherlock may not be new, this is an excellent fresh new take for a scripted series. The relationship between Sherlock and his (possible) daughter is fantastic! They bounce right off eachother. I am excited to see where this journey takes us and all the adventures they get up to. Thewlis has taken this character and add an element to him that I haven't seen before in a Sherlock performance. The daughter has a charm to her that draws you in and you're rooting for her. She holds her own next to Sherlock which can be hard to do with that type of character. Also, fantastic casting with Moriarty. Staying hopeful they will continue this series for more seasons to come!
