Memoir Seorang Guru

It is too 'heavy' and depressing for a movie...

The storyline is about a hot-tempered teacher who was transferred to a rural school, from his initial resistance to students' struggles to his eventual dedication to their success.

The pacing is uneven at times, especially when the middle part dips into melodrama, it goes slow and draggy.

I love the kids in the movie - Alias, Mihad, Mat, Sakinah and Halim. They act naturally and lead the movie well! It's also good to see multi-racial kids and teachers play a role in the movie, and how Mr Sunan (Guru) shows concerns and deals with them.

I also like the message by Mr Sunan that reminds the rural kids about the transformative power of education, shapes the young minds, and inspires them for a better future!

However, personally, I do not like movies that are overly emotional and involve too many deaths. It is depressing, and the feeling is too "negatively strong" & upsetting. Killing a monkey with blood splashing on Alias' face is shocking to me!! With the continuous deaths one by one in the movie,.. it's just too depressing! Although it is touching, somehow I found it overly sentimental and manipulative.

I love the relationship development between the teacher and students. BUT again, I found it too 'heavy' and emotionally down.

Amazing performance by my most favourite Malaysian actor Rosyham Nor Sir

This movie brings us to our school day memories, the classroom, the lessons and class teacher who travel with us. Very good casting, Rosyham Nor Sir as the teacher and all the supporting cast, the school students really performed well. You will get teary eyed at the ending.....please make more movies like this and thanks Netflix for showcasing this. Music was so emotional and touching, visuals of the province really so good and I really like how they decided to show us some memorable moments in the movie. There is no need to spoonfeed audience with many scenes. That's life, accidents happen and the message of the story is to forgive someone's mistake. Respect the teacher and cherish those beautiful moments in school.

Heart warming..Go watch it.

Sunan, an urban primary school teacher left the comfort of his town and headed to a kampung (rural) school, hoping to find peace after losing his wife. Little to be known, his daugher and him would be embarking on a emotional roller coaster from day 1 of their time there.

A hard headed teacher, Sunan always seen criticizing the education system. His temper was always his biggest issue and in order to keep everything in check, he had to change everything. From his teaching ways, his approach to life iteself and how he dealt with those kampung boys, Sunan was taught some valuable life lessons.

A story that hits very close to your heart if you ever went to school in Malaysia or if you ever went to school at all. A story that recalls the ups and downs of teachers, the harsh reality of kampung education and most importantly the student-teacher connection that will always stand the test of time.

This is no Hollywood stuff. Just a run of the sawah padi mill of true Malaysian life.

A lost potential

The premise of this story is good.

However, the pacing is too slow, and the acting is bad. At times, it was just too awkward how unnecessarily dramatic some scenes are, to the point that they don't make sense. Such as the teacher and his daughter suddenly looking around dramatically at the school gate and then just sitting there unprovoked. I don't even know what the scene wants to convey.

This is a shame because if done correctly, this story could be inspiring. The story should have been executed more naturally in every way. The acting could be more natural, and the scenes don't have to be too dramatic.
