Empty, expressionless, unintentionally comical from start to finish, a constant useless waste, terrible. A test of endurance against the embarrassment it provokes. The underlying idea could probably have been interesting, but it remains an undeveloped trace. Of the entire feature film, I would only save a few scenes in the clubs, which are still immersed in rough acting, with poorly characterized characters except for accumulations of clichés. The scenes where they pretend to sing so clumsily in moments full of pathos made me laugh heartily; I strongly doubt it was an artistic choice, and for something better executed with a little more care, it would have taken very little.
This was part of the 2024 competition at the BUT Film Festival in Breda and won the Feature Film Award. After a somewhat overlong intro in grainy black and white, the film tightens it´s grip as latex-masked drug courier Eris (Alyona Konstantinova) seduces criminal club owner Chemkar (Malik Blumenthal) into his first trip with the wonder drug "Flashback".
Flashback brings memories back to life, and not just the beautiful ones. From then on, a black journey of the soul unfolds in a stylish alternation between delirious colors and atmospheric black and white, and a score between percussive electronics and a kind of "Satan's opera". Along the way, fetish eroticism and science fiction lie alongside horror and pulp elements.
Guided by the shape-shifting Eris, Chemkar wanders through an unreal, dazzling Russian nightlife in which he becomes entangled in his criminal intrigues and is driven by visions of his childhood. The loose narrative is constantly interwoven with coded references to Russia's war.
For me, the highlight was the incredible opera scene with a "battle of the divas" that leads to the finale, in which the loose strands of the dreamlike narrative are cruelly interwoven.
Misogynistic Chemkar is not a sympathetic character, but his childhood alter ego radiates enough innocent charisma to put his cold brutality into perspective. And don´t worry: finally, at the end, Chemkar gets what he deserves.

From the first second, my attention was captivated by the multi-genre and unusual musical soundtrack and visuals. It can even be called a very long and beautiful video clip that hypnotizes and surprises. Revived memories and dreams like from the Akashic records. I also enjoyed the well-crafted Tarantino's style dialogues, but shorter and without the use of of jerk off metaphysic.
The film is an excellent example of how to create a unique atmosphere with the help of music, visual effects, and dialogue. The club and ritual scenes are convincing. The director, actors and the team did a great job. I recommend this movie to anyone who appreciates originality and creativity in cinema.

- QuizPart of the studio sets were built in disused rooms of the legendary Wawilov Institute of Optics in Saint-Petersburg, where research on optical systems had been carried out since World War I. On the floor of the abandoned laboratories, the team found shards of experimental glass filters that cinematographer Sven Jakob-Engelmann attached in front of his lenses to enhance the dreamlike atmosphere of the film. Professor Igor Plaksin, a veteran VFX-artist who worked in the Lenfilm Studios since the 1980s, made special analog trick lenses at the director's request because Andreas Marschall wanted to use as few digital effects as possible.
