‘It’s church with butt jokes’: Kevin Smith looks back as ‘Dogma’ turns 25
Image
More than a quarter of a century after its release, Kevin Smith’s Dogma remains one of the most ambitious and inventive films about spirituality Hollywood ever made.

Smith’s fourth film, it took the signature, wisecracking verbosity of Clerks, Mallrats, and Chasing Amy and combined it with the filmmaker’s interpretation of the Catholic beliefs by which he’d been raised. “Woke” before the term existed, Dogma featured a female God, a Black Jesus, and a series of increasingly unconventional portrayals of other divine figures. Yet armed with a killer cast that includes Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Linda Fiorentino, Alan Rickman, Chris Rock, Salma Hayek, and Alanis Morrissette, today the film has endured as a surprisingly reverent — and to many viewers, relatable — portrait of religious faith, interrogated and restored in a journey that culminates in the filmmaker’s hometown of Red Bank, N.J.

For better or worse, it...

"F--k Buying An Old Movie": Harvey Weinstein Turned Down Kevin Smith's Multiple Offers To Buy The Rights To His Long-Out-Of-Print Movie
Image
Kevin Smith has finally secured the rights to his long out-of-print classic from 1999, and he explains the complicated process of dealing with disgraced movie executive, Harvey Weinstein. Smith was one of the handful of independent filmmakers from the 1990s who helped revolutionize the small-budget movie. Following his breakout film, Clerks, with a string of irreverent and poignant comedies, Smith captured the zeitgeist of the final years of the decade. However, one of his most popular films was tied up in rights issues for years, but the director has finally resolved them over 25 years later.

In an exclusive interview with ScreenRant, Smith discussed the complicated process of securing the rights to Dogma, and revealed that Weinstein was reluctant to give the movie back. Due to a pre-streaming deal signed by Smith, the 1999 spoof on religion was held up in limbo and allowed to go out of print. When the director attempted...

When Ben Affleck Regretted His Same-Sex Kiss In Chasing Amy & Said He Would’ve Handled It Differently
Image
When Ben Affleck Reflected On Same-Sex Kiss Scene (Photo Credit – YouTube)

Ben Affleck is getting real about a scene stuck in his head since the late ’90s. It’s that same-sex kiss from Chasing Amy, and he’s finally opening up about the discomfort he felt during filming. Affleck admitted that his awkwardness back then wasn’t just nerves. It came from a place he now recognizes as internalized homophobia. And if given the chance, he says he’d absolutely do things differently.

The topic popped up again during the 20th anniversary screening of Chasing Amy at Outfest in Los Angeles. Director Kevin Smith recalled a moment from the set that aged like milk. “A man kissing another man is the greatest acting challenge an actor can ever face,” Ben Affleck reportedly said before and after the scene. He added, “Now, I’m a serious actor.” Safe to say, those words haven’t aged well.

A24 Scales Back Documentary Division and Lays Off 5 Employees
Image
A24 is scaling back its documentary division, laying off five employees from its nonfiction branch, IndieWire has learned. It’s potentially the sign of a shift away from documentary films at the indie distributor.

A24 in recent years has backed docs that have been or will be released theatrically by A24 itself, like the upcoming “André Is an Idiot,” which made its premiere at Sundance 2025, or last year’s “Look Into My Eyes.” Other recent A24 docs include some licensed films for streaming, including “The Last of the Sea Women,” the two-part Steve Martin documentary “Steve!,” and other bio-docs like “Amy,” “Val,” “Stephen Curry: Underrated,” and “The Deepest Breath.”

Nicole Stott, who leads the division, is remaining at A24, as is Emily Osborne, the head of documentary production. They will stay on to work on other documentary projects already in the works, including Victor Kossakovsky’s doc “Architecton” about concrete,...

A24 Scales Back Documentary Division, Lays Off Five

A24 is shutting down its documentary filmmaking department with five people departing from that division, Variety has confirmed.

Headed by Nicole Stott, the division has produced recent docs including “Look Into My Eyes,” “The Last of the Sea Women,” “The Sixth” and Morgan Neville’s Steve Martin documentary “Steve!”

Stott and Emily Osborne, head of documentary production, will remain at A24 long enough to complete work on ongoing projects.

Non-fiction projects that are already finished or in production, such as “André Is an Idiot” and “Architecton” will continue to be handled by A24. The same goes for other projects still in production such as the Philippou brothers’ wrestling doc “Deathmatch” and “The Yogurt Shop Murders.”

The company is not ruling out working with filmmakers on further documentary projects, but the market has become too challenging to support an entire division, sources indicated.

Why Penny Was The Only Big Bang Theory Character Name-Dropped In Young Sheldon's Series Finale
Image
In the series finale of "Young Sheldon" — the first major spin-off of "The Big Bang Theory" that wonders "what if Sheldon, but young?" — we see the on-screen return of "old Sheldon" as played by original "Big Bang Theory" star Jim Parsons. We also hear about one of Sheldon's dearest friends, Penny Hofstadter, played on Chuck Lorre's massively popular CBS sitcom "The Big Bang Theory," by Kaley Cuoco. Specifically, we learn that Penny babysits Sheldon and Amy's kids.

Executive producer Steve Holland spoke to Variety after the episode aired to discuss why they chose to mention Penny over Sheldon's other friends from "The Big Bang Theory," including Howard Wolowitz (Simon Helberg), Raj Koothrappali (Kunal Nayyar), or even Penny's husband (and Sheldon's best friend) Leonard Hofstadter, played by Johnny Galecki. "We didn't want to go with the whole cast," Holland explained. "And we also wanted to keep it on Sheldon and Amy and their kids' relationship,...

Who Killed Amy Winehouse? Asif Kapadia on the Case of the Dead Singer, and the ‘Really Heavy’ Version of ‘Amy’ His Wife Preferred
Image
British filmmaker Asif Kapadia approached Oscar-winning documentary “Amy,” which was released 10 years ago, as if he were a detective investigating a crime, he told an audience of documentary professionals this week at Visions du Réel, a film festival in Nyon, Switzerland. So, who killed Amy Winehouse?

As he was making the film, Kapadia was conscious that it was “really dark.” “A friend said to me, ‘If you tell the truth, this film’s never going to come out.’ I thought: ‘What’s the truth? I don’t know what the story is.’ And then once I learned the story, I thought, ‘My God, this thing will never come out. It’s really heavy.’ There’s a version of this film that is 15 minutes longer, which is like really heavy, and my wife is still annoyed that we didn’t release that one, but it’s just a bit too much.

Oscar-winning British director Asif Kapadia has spoken of the difficulties of both making and distributing his end-of-days doc/fiction feature2073.

Told from a future perspective after the collapse of society, it utilises real-life footage to point to global tragedy to come. But Kapadia says that the “tipping point into authoritarian rule” has already arrived.

Speaking during a wide-ranging masterclass at Visions du Reel, Kapadia described 2073, which premiered in Venice last September,as “a documentary set in the future that hasn’t happened yet. The film is a warning, which I think even one of the financiers didn’t get – until...

Days of Our Lives spoilers reveal that Ej Dimera (Dan Feuerriegel) gets shot on Thursday, April 3, 2025. There are a long list of suspects, but the real shooter could be someone totally unexpected.

There are likely to be a few false leads and arrests, as well as one glaring red herring. However, could the shooter actually be super-religious and super-strict mama bear Amy Choi (Shi Ne Nielson)? Keep reading and let’s talk about what could happen with this storyline.

Ej Dimera’s Shooting

This Thursday, Ej will get shot. In a preview clip, Ej casually turns to look at someone and then is struck with a bullet. Ej doesn’t seem nervous, on guard, scared, or even angry before the shot is fired.

So, Ej certainly doesn’t expect this person to shoot him. In fact, this person could be a total non-threat to Ej – at least, until that trigger is pulled.

Young and the Restless Fan Theory: Amy’s Faking Her Illness
Image
Amy returned to The Young and the Restless four months ago. The distressed mother sought Nate’s help with an urgent family matter. However, some fans think Nate shouldn’t be so trusting of Miss Lewis.

Is Nate Being Lied To?

Amy (Valarie Pettiford) was a prominent Y&R character back in the ’80s. She was a colleague of Paul’s (Doug Davidson) and had a romance with Nathan (Nathan Purdee). After leaving Genoa City in 1988, it seemed that was the last of Amy.

However, in 2024, she made her surprising return. Amy tracked down Nathan’s son, Nate (Sean Dominic), to drop two huge bombshells. He had a half-brother named Damian (Jermaine Rivers), who’s missing. Amy then revealed she was dying of cancer and wanted to reunite with Damian before she died. Nate agreed to help Amy, and the two bonded as they searched for Damian. Doc Season 1 Episode 5 Review: He Ain’t Heavy
Image
The Doc characters are wonderfully human, which often results in messy, emotional, and infuriating moments.

There wasn’t a single character on this series who didn’t drive me absolutely mad during Doc Season 1 Episode 5, except Jake. Jake is pretty consistently great.

I am intrigued by the combination of compelling medical cases and personal drama, and as the season progresses, Doc is finding its footing with this.

(Courtesy of Fox) Sonya versus Amy: The Sequel

We’ve been trying to figure out what’s at the heart of the beef between Sonya and Amy.

As it stands now, it’s been entirely one-sided. Pre-Amnesia Amy didn’t think of Sonya at all, and Amy now had no idea what was happening.

It’s resulted in Sonya coming off as one of the series’ most unfavorable characters because we didn’t have a lot of context for her attitude and...

9-1-1: Lone Star’s Rob Lowe Pitched a Much Darker Series Finale Ending
Image
If you enjoyed the happy, full-circle ending of 9-1-1: Lone Star‘s series finale, you have Rob Lowe to not thank for it. If the star and executive producer had his way, the Fox procedural would have ended on a very different, much darker note.

As it is, the finale ended with Lowe’s character, Captain Owen Strand, successfully preventing a nuclear reactor from melting down after being hit by an asteroid. The episode really wanted us to think that Owen sacrificed himself to save the city, but after several gratuitous fake-outs, we learned that he actually moved to New York,...

Asif Kapadia, an Oscar Winner With ‘Amy,’ to Open Visions du Réel Industry Program
Image
British filmmaker Asif Kapadia, an Oscar winner with “Amy,” will be the opening speaker of the 23rd edition of the industry program of documentary festival Visions du Réel in Nyon, Switzerland.

The director, screenwriter and producer will give a masterclass on April 6, officially launching the industry program.

The festival said Kapadia has “continued to develop an innovative cinematographic language that combines the use of a rich corpus of personal archives, often previously unpublished, with extensive investigative work and a psychological approach to the life of his characters.”

He is the author of a trilogy of films centered on the tragic destinies of extraordinary talents from different backgrounds and generations: “Senna” (2010), “Amy” and “Diego Maradona” (2019) are among his critically acclaimed films.

“His body of work blurs the contours of the documentary genre by freely intersecting the emotional and narrative punch of fiction and the more rigorous veins of investigative filmmaking, shedding...

Doc Season 1, Episode 3 Review: One Big Change - For Better and Worse
Image
Quick Links Doc Lets Amy Make Mistakes - Albeit Predictably Doc Season 1, Episode 3 Finally Fleshes Out Jake Heller Doc Doesn't Know How to Write Its Other Characters Yet

The following contains major spoilers from Doc Season 1, Episode 3, "Day One," which debuted Tuesday, Jan. 22 on Fox.

Doc Season 1, Episode 3, "Day One" feels like the first real episode of the Fox drama. With all of the explanation about Dr. Amy Larsen's condition and how she returns to work out of the way, this is the first script that's more focused on the goings-on at Westside Hospital and the people who work there. The supporting characters come alive for the first time -- although in some cases, highlighting them proves how flawed the writing for them is.

"Day One" sees Amy taking on her first shift alongside Dr. Tj Coleman, whom she had previously pushed too hard when she was Chief of Internal Medicine.

High Potential Season 1 Episode 9 Finally Gets Some Traction on Its Biggest Unsolved Case
Image
If there is one thing every fan of High Potential can expect, it’s that every episode ends on an emotional note, and “The Rams” was no different. Raise your hand if you were floored by the revelation of what the episode title meant.

Another thing viewers should expect is that every episode features a case that could easily receive a part two. If you’re anything like this TV Fanatic, you likely noticed that the case in this episode felt like it could’ve been fleshed out into quite a few parts.

Maybe it was for the best because even with Morgan’s High Potential, she struggled in this episode. Then again, I have a feeling all that baseball knowledge will come in handy down the road, as does every other random fact floating in her big brain.

Also, it has to be said that Karadec is clearly developing feelings for Morgan,...

Cast Your Vote: Which Witch Show Cast a Spell Over You?
Image
My last article about genre shows got me thinking: what were the best TV shows about witches? I’m not talking about shows containing witches but those where witches are the focus.

After all, witches have always cast a spell on TV fans, bringing magic, mystery, and mayhem to our screens.

Whether it’s the charming chaos of Bewitched, where Samantha Stephens tried to blend her magical powers with suburban life, or the dark, broody drama of Charmed, where the Halliwell sisters used their powers to fight evil and protect their family legacy, there’s something captivating about witches.

(The WB/Screenshot)

These shows invite us into worlds where anything feels possible, where spells can fix problems or create even bigger ones, and where characters grapple with the power and responsibility of their gifts.

From lighthearted humor to dark, atmospheric thrills, witches on TV show us a little bit of everything: the joy of magic,...

Taylor Sheridan Boldly Tells Stories Others Overlook
Image
Taylor Sheridan tells stories that stick with you.

His shows take us into parts of American life that don’t usually make it to TV.

From Yellowstone to Lioness, he doesn’t just entertain — he shows us struggles and realities we might not see otherwise.

(Paramount+/Screenshot) Giving Voice to Unseen Worlds

Sheridan’s stories feel real because they’re rooted in truth. Yellowstone is a perfect example: the Dutton family fights to hold onto their Montana ranch, but it’s about more than just land.

It’s about identity, heritage, and keeping a way of life alive as the world changes around them. The prequels, 1883 and 1923, go back to show how that legacy was built through grit and sacrifice.

Then there’s Landman. Sheridan takes on the oil business, digging into the complicated lives of the people who keep the world running.

(Emerson Miller / Paramount)

It’s not a pretty picture,...
