Why do nearly all narrators of documentaries describing past events have the infuriating habit of talking about them in the present tense rather than the past tense?

Are they illiterate or is it some pathetic attempt to make "stuffy old history" seem more current and appealing to the uninitiated?

Thankfully most of the educated contributors manage to avoid this annoying trait.

It is a great shame because once you notice it this technique ruins the enjoyment of the programme completely.

Ben Fogle is an intelligent educated man so I can only assume that he is reading from a script written by someone with an agenda or without a clue.

Prepare to hear Ben Fogle say Nucular about 490 times in 3 hours.

If you can cope with that you'll be fine.

Doesn't really add anything you won't get from other series or a 10 minute read of the Wikipedia page or the Sky series which is much much better and actually the way they build the drama in this in such an artificial way, which sounds stupid when you think about what it's about, but somehow they manage it. It is still a very interesting watch though, which is why it gets 3 stars from me for that alone, but actually just the nucular thing is enough to knock 7 points off. You wouldn't get a man to perform Hamlet if he insisted on prouncing it the kingdom of Danmork.
