Saba nayagan is a very nice feel good movie that you can enjoy with your family and friends. Crisp screenplay, lively characters, excellent organic comedy and a very interesting twist in the end for a love story. Excellent production value, nice music and uniformly well acted. Ashok Selvan is moving from strength to strength with his choice of movies. All 3 female leads have registered strong performances. The comedy works big time. First time director C. S. Karthikeyan has done a neat job and looks like one director we can watch for in the future. Must watch if you love Rom com. Definitely one of the top 10 movies of 2023.
Why more people aren't talking about this film, I don't know. Underrated, IMO. Don't watch the trailer if you haven't. I went into this film with no prior idea of what this was about, and about half way through, I thought "there's nothing new in this film, but it's really enjoyable". Boy was I wrong...about the first part, which we'll get to.
I'm not a fan of the RomCom genre but I thought Thiruchitrambalam was a fun movie. Most romance movies are sappy or too commercial, hardly relatable. This, however, you have (or somebody you know has) lived through about 90% of plot of this film. It will take you on a nostalgia trip (not the easy-way-out kind) like most movies haven't in a long time.
The cinematography deserves a special mention, not for showing scenic locations well, but for showing certain characters a certain way that you can hear your childhood friend go "Kavithai da. Kavithai!" I didn't care for the songs in Thiru'balam, and I didn't care for the ones in this film either. Regardless of how old the plot is it was FUN! Relatable, humorous. And then, the part that I DID NOT except.
One of Ashok Selvan's best works. What a 2023/24 he's had! Everybody else was great at what they were given.
What I saw in this film, I have NOT seen in any other film before. Mindblowing? No. But maaaybe, yes? That last part changed how I viewed the entire movie. Credit to the writing team. How wrong was I about the "There's nothing new in this film" part!? XD But hey, glad to be wrong this time.
Don't miss out on this one. Hardly anybody is talking about it, I don't know why. 90's bois, you'll LOVE it.

The director of this movie cs kartikeyan cleverly uses several callbacks from classic films and manages to perfectly hit the nostalgia felling which all men would be able to feel. This movie is a perfect blend of romance, comedy and emotions. The crew does an Expectional job, especially the lead, Ashok Selvan as saba he is nearly in every other frame of the film but never makes you fell saturated and he is great in romantic portions. The female leads also do their job exceptionally well but kartika muralidaranhan is a standout among all the girls viviya(not sure about the spelling) as saba s sister is perfect, and the girl who played riya is has done the job but doesn't match the charm of ashok selvan she clearly is a mismatch in the song where the dance together. Megha akash also doesnt fail to impress us with her brief presence on screen. Jaiselan and arun fill the void for comic and are natural on the screen. This is films is so underrated. This film is for all men, clearly and cleverly depicts the struggles of a boy in getting his girl. This movie surely deserves tour time and attention.
(+2) Ashok Selvan is an excellent actor and has also become a skilled dancer. He is truly captivating on screen, and his dialogue delivery and expressions add depth to his character, 'Saba'.
(-1) Unfortunately, Karthika's acting is subpar. Although her character has limited scope, she fails to make an impression.
(+2) The dance choreography in this movie is both unique and creative. It'll leave you amazed and impressed. Kudos to the masters Raju Sundaram, Leela, and Brinda.
(-1) The songs in the movie were not up to the mark. The lyrics were outdated and failed to blend well with the overall theme of the film. They were forgettable.
(+3) The movie's concept is brilliant - the lead character is arrested and begins narrating his love stories to the police. The credit goes to C. S. Karthikeyan.
(+2) The screenplay is refreshingly different from the usual romantic movies that idealize fairy tales. It's commendable that it remains grounded in reality, with the lead character falling in love multiple times and not sticking up to one girl.
(-2) However, the ending is clichéd, and the director could have avoided it altogether. It's unrealistic and doesn't fit with the rest of the movie, which tries to be as realistic as possible. The climax seems like a fantasy and was included just to wrap up the story.
(-1) The movie feels a bit too long after a while. It's exhausting to see the lead character's heart being broken multiple times, and the viewer starts wishing for the movie to end.
(+4) The movie's humor is its strong point. It's been a while since I watched a movie that made me laugh so much. The comedy isn't overdone, with the tone of the dialogues and the background music being perfectly balanced. The jokes are on point and relatable.
(-1) Some dialogues in the movie are derogatory towards women, with the word 'figure' being used to objectify them. For example, the dialogue 'Our boys do not leave out a single 'figure,' they 'correct' them all' is disgusting and should have been avoided. Credit goes to C. S. Karthikeyan.
Overall, Sabanayakan is an enjoyable, lighthearted comedy that's perfect for a weekend watch. Although there are some negative aspects to the movie, the positive ones outweigh them. You can watch it with your friends, family, and loved ones without any worries. It won't disappoint you.

Rom-coms in any language are a light watch, and thus, this seemed like a good choice, especially since Ashok Selvan mostly delivers good movies. But boy, I didn't know I was about to be proven wrong.
Saba narrates his love life from his school days to the present to appease the police officers after being arrested for causing a nuisance in a public place.
The story takes you through various stages of Saba's love life-how he fell in and out of love each time. But despite multiple love angles, none are interesting or unique enough to stick with you. If an emotional route wasn't the goal, the film could have at least been funny, but it fails there too. The entire movie meanders toward nothing, and the suspense factor introduced at the end makes no sense, leaving you even more disappointed.
The saving grace is Ashok Selvan, who delivers a solid performance and keeps your interest, but even he can't salvage a shallow script like this. A series of good-looking actresses have been cast, and while they are all decent, none leave a lasting impression.
The jokes land in places but, overall, feel bland. The songs are hummable yet forgettable-nothing that would make it to your playlist. The cinematography is a plus, keeping the movie light and breezy to watch.
You're definitely not recommended to watch this one, even if you're an Ashok Selvan fan. Save your time and energy by skipping it.
