Gabe Polsky’s Wild New Doc ‘The Man Who Saves the World?’ Sets Unusual Rollout, Awards-Qualifying Run (Exclusive)
Image
A most unusual documentary from a most unusual filmmaker is set to receive, appropriately enough, a most unusual release, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The Man Who Saves the World?, the latest doc from award-winning filmmaker Gabe Polsky (2014’s Red Army, 2018’s In Search of Greatness and 2022’s Butcher’s Crossing), follows an eccentric American peace activist, Patrick McCollum, who believes that he has been chosen to fulfill an ancient prophecy — that one man will unite the indigenous tribes of South America and save the Amazon — and who then goes to extreme measures to do just that.

In this stranger-than-fiction film, which I have seen and loved, Polsky, a Werner Herzog protege who has made a film no less wild, crazy and captivating than Herzog’s best, treks all over the world with McCollum, like Sancho Panza with Don Quixote. He seems to waver — as I think most audiences will — between...

Tales of the Jedi: Why Raxus is important
Image
This article has spoilers for the Tales of the Jedi short “Choices.”

In the Tales of the Jedi short “Choices,” Dooku teams up with Mace Windu to retrieve the body of a fallen Jedi. As they arrive on Raxus, Dooku can’t shake the feeling that something is wrong. It leads them to investigate and uncover a much larger plot.

Two years prior to the outbreak of the Clone Wars and after he has left the Jedi Order to become a Sith Lord, Dooku makes a declaration against the corruption of the Republic. Ian Somerhalder on Why He Walked Away From Acting

Ian Somerhalder is reflecting on walking away from acting.

In an interview with People published Monday, the Vampire Diaries star explained why he stepped away from the screen to pursue various passion projects. The actor’s comments come amid the CW show’s 15th anniversary and the 20th anniversary of Lost, both shows on which he starred.

“Aug. 19 makes five years since I was professionally on camera as an actor/producer,” Somerhalder said. “I stepped away from that after V Wars to build these companies, launch films like Kiss the Ground, Common Ground and Ground Swell and raise my kids. I remember sitting with my management talking about this, saying, ‘Hey, this is the only thing I’ve ever known that’s ever sustained my family, and I’m walking away from it,’ at this sort of peak, could have gone and done anything, but these partnerships mean way more to me.

‘This Is Upside Down World’: Fox News’ Bret Baier And Martha MacCallum Talk About Covering The Chaotic 2024 Race & The Rise Of Kamala Harris
Image
Fox News was the most watched network for the Republican National Convention last month, drawing an overwhelming share of the viewers throughout the week, including an average of 9.43 million on the final night.

The question is whether the Democratic National Convention will be a far different story — a big if given that leaders in the party have at times chided or shunned the network.

That said, figures such as Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Sen. Chris Coons (D-de) have made recent appearances, while Kamala Harris’ campaign announced over the weekend that part of a mega ad buy would be on the network’s daytime programming, “particularly during day-time programming which reaches a more moderate audience.”

In separate interviews, Deadline spoke to Special Report‘s Bret Baier and The Story‘s Martha MacCallum, who are lead anchors of Fox News’ coverage, about what they expect this week, whether it’s a...

Kensuke’s Kingdom Review: A Poignant Tale of Unlikely Bonds
Image
Kensuke’s Kingdom brings to life Michael Morpurgo’s 1999 story in a beautifully animated adaptation. Directed by Neil Boyle and Kirk Hendry, this 2023 British film tells the tale of an 11-year-old boy named Michael who is shipwrecked on a remote island. There he encounters the island’s sole inhabitant, Kensuke, an elderly Japanese man living alone since World War II.

The film is adapted from Morpurgo’s novel by Frank Cottrell Boyce, known for works like Treasure Island and The Moses Expedition. Cottrell Boyce’s screenplay captures the heart of the original story while making some smart changes. Notably, Kensuke speaks no English in the film, creating an unexpected bond between the castaways that must overcome a language barrier. This shifts the dynamic in an impactful way.

Through traditional hand-drawn animation, Kensuke’s Kingdom brings Morpurgo’s touching story of friendship to life. The visuals are beautifully paired with sound design and...

“Hirayama clearly derives enjoyment from performing his work well,” the New York Times wrote in a rave review, “but there’s more to his life than labor, and more to this movie than a simplistic celebration of manual toil.”

A Climate-Focused Film Studio Takes Root in Ojai
Image
Two llamas are bounding up a small hill in Ojai, drawn to the sounds of filmmaker Rebecca Tickell yelling in a high-pitched voice, “Rama! Yoda!” Tickell has in her hand a bucket full of feed, and the two shaggy, snow-colored mammals are ready to eat.

“When the chickens got to an excessive number, they started getting picked off by coyotes,” explains Rebecca’s husband and collaborator, Josh. “These guys, they probably get rid of about 60, 70 percent of the coyotes.” What about the other 30 to 40 percent? “What happens is when you run a farm, you begin the cycle of predator and prey,” Josh says. He adds, “Most people have a bucolic fairy tale [image] of what sustainability in farming looks like. And then you get into it and you realize, ‘Wow, this is really hard.’”

At their all-encompassing home, film studio and farm in Ojai, the Tickells are working to practice what they preach.

‘Common Ground’ Review: Well-Intentioned Doc About Regenerative Farming Offers Limited Insights Into an American Environmental Crisis
Image
A well-meaning yet generic environmental activism documentary with sporadic insights, “Common Ground” opens with a series of stars including Laura Dern, Jason Momoa, Donald Glover, Woody Harrelson and Rosario Dawson as they write apologetic letters to future generations. Their words claim to reveal harsh truths that boil down to, “We have failed you” and “We should have done better.” This parade of famous voices is a curiously trite start for a film driven by facts and stats for the most part. It’s as if co-directors Joshua and Rebecca Harrell Tickell (“Kiss The Ground”) seek instant credibility through empty-calorie celebrity activism, when they should just let the experts speak about the film’s main focus: ethical regenerative farming. And once they do, “Common Ground” proves it has some meaty arguments to offer, despite feeling like a sunny infomercial on occasion.

The most fundamental of those arguments goes like this: In...

After Retiring From Acting, Ian Somerhalder Fights For The Environment In New Documentary ‘Common Ground’
Image
It’s been four years since Ian Somerhalder’s last acting role, but that doesn’t mean he’ll no longer be around film screenings.

The Vampire Diaries actor attended the premiere of the documentary Common Ground. He posed for the cameras at the event in a simple white dress shirt, black pants and a Common Ground ballcap while holding a cardboard sign with the words “Common Ground” written on it.

Asked about his decision to retire from acting, he told E! News that he did so to “raise [his] kids, build [his] companies and get these films launched.

The films Somerhalder spoke of are Common Ground and its prequel, Kiss the Ground, in which Somerhalder serves as executive producer. Both films center around saving the climate and providing a better environment to enable healthy farming and appease world hunger. Ian Somerhalder Explains the Reason Why He Isn't Acting Anymore

Sequels 2, Original 0 at Box Office: ‘Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie’ and ‘Saw X’ Hit, ‘The Creator’ Doesn’t
Image
“Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie” (Paramount) topped “Saw X” (Lionsgate) by a healthy $5 million ($23 million to $18 million) on a weekend when either seemed feasible at #1. However, the order here isn’t the real story.

While a “Paw”/”Saw” convergence isn’t exactly the second coming of “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer,” it’s still two films with very different appeal that clicked on the same weekend and will end up in profit.

“The Creator” (Disney) ranked as #3 with $14 million, which isn’t the problem so much as its expense. The Gareth Edwards-directed sci-fi actioner in which humans battle AI drew praise for its visual design at a price, but a modest debut for the New Regency production is a setback for those hoping creativity and originality might launch this higher.

Still, that does mean three films grossed over $14 million in September, which is by no means a sure thing. The total gross looks like around $86 million,...
