It starts off strong, however....

I was looking forward to this series and couldn't wait to see what it had to offer due to the exciting trailers. At first I was not disappointed as there was a sizzling buildup- however sub plots began to develop which left me wondering where this was all going. The problem was the sub plots didn't really go anywhere or have anything to to with the main event. Then we had to make some huge leaps in suspension of disbelief as it soon becomes absurd. All in all a good start but it could have been much better if the plot had been focused and not all over the place. So I'm afraid I feel a little disappointed.

Had SUCH potential...

Man, with most of the cast this had so much potential. I knew Sam Heughan and Elinor Tomlinson from the few episodes of, "Outlander" that I have seen, so I was on board. Plus the title made it sound intriguing.

Jessica De Gouw is someone I have seen but, she didn't have that instant name recognizability to me, but funnily enough played the best character of this tale.

The story is basically a new couple moves in across the street, from De Gouw and Heughan who are married. They all become closer and "swinging" is in the mix.

Alfred Enoch plays "Pete" who is married to Tomlinson, and boy, is this the worst acting or character briefs he was given with the roll, but by minute seven of a 6 episode series, he is detestable. You couldn't root for him if you tried hard. Props to Hugh Dennis as the creepiest neighbor you've ever come in contact with.

This could been decent at 4 episodes. Still, not bad. It's a good one to watch if you have a lot of laundry to fold.

Writing this while watching - because I'm boooooored...

Aww, I so wanted this to be good!

The trailer looked great, but so far (just started episode 2) it's cheesy, lame and a bit - well, boring.

I love a good Harlan Coben, which I thought this had vibes of, but noooo....

The most entertaining thing so far , is that the neighbour guy bloke looks just like the geezer from Eastenders (don't know his name, just remember him from when my Grandma used to watch it - wish she was here so I could wind her up that it's him 😂) aside from that, yeah, I'm bored....

I'll stick with it, who knows, maybe it's a slow burner... I'll update later if it gets any better 😊

Passed the time

I notice there are some 10/10 reviews here. Well it's Hardly in the same league as Line Of Duty! It's a totally ridiculous story of a middle class suburban neighbourhood, that starts when a young attractive couple move in to one of the houses. They become friends with a couple across the road and this leads to a an affair and it all starts to kick off, especially when a creepy resident from across the road played nicely by Hugh Dennis starts spying on them through a telescope.

There are several other sub plots along the way including corrupt police, diamond smuggling and a local online paper trying to catch a major criminal.

To be fair they cram hell of a lot in these six episodes and it moves along at such a fast pace you don't stop to think how daft the plot is. 6/10.

Atrocious

It's difficult to imagine a drama with a poorer script, direction and acting.

The storyline was ludicrous in the extreme, the characterisation paper thin and the acting so unconvincing that it would fail a first year student at any drama school. The dialogue was laughably weak.

It's amazing that whoever commissioned the series allowed it to be broadcast as it will damage their reputation and that of all of those involved.

I've tried hard to think of any redeeming features and I've been unable to do so.

It's shameful that this gets broadcast when there are talented writers and directors around.

Must see TV

I wasn't sure about the subject matter at the center of THE COUPLE NEXT DOOR,however, as soon as I started watching it was clear this story is about much more than non monogamous couples. It's tender, compelling, intense and complex. Danny, played by Outlander star Sam Heughan, is a fascinating character, at times so much more then so much less than he appears on the surface. Eleanor Tomlinson, as Evy, Alfred Enoch as Pete and Jessica De Gouw as Becka, are equally complex and compelling characters and the story line twists and turns and offers multiple surprises.

The entire cast is spot on perfect but it was so refreshing seeing Heughan, who plays Outlanders Jamie Fraser with such skill, break out his full range of acting chops in this role. Well done Sam!

This is one not to miss as Dries Vos brings his unique directorial sense to the story line making it at once a thrilling, e empathetic and very sexy drama.

... don't be thinking of who they played before.. this a very different genre

... it's the Danny-Evie-show... from the moment both first meet locking-gazes, there's palpable chemistry between them, which heightened when she learns about his extra-curricular activities... that physical attraction building across early episodes, reaching an intensely sexual crescendo which will leave you extremely hot under the collar... this pair feels heat together not far short of a-'hard-core' quality-variety

... besides the sex, and there's enough of that, there's a very-creepy-neighbor & his unknowing-wife, a school-teacher-story, a cop-caper along with numerous-bad-guys, yoga-time, pregnancies, a-second-family, mothers-fathers in-law, et al ... there's no want for scene-changes

... you might tune in to watch alluring-Tomlinson-Heughan... this guilty-pleasure-series no-doubt is addictive... one critic writing.. "With its intriguing characters, nuanced dynamics and surfeit of narrative dominoes just waiting to topple, Channel 4's latest is a sexy, surprising success - suburbia never looked so much fun" ... another saying.. "The Couple Next Door isn't just about sex, but that strand of the story is by far the most entertaining... interplay between the two couples makes for addictive viewing, most viewers won't be able to look away as that dynamic continues to evolve.. The Couple Next Door won't sweep the board during awards season, but it's an incredibly moreish series that will keep you coming back."

It's bad, very bad

The only reason I don't give this one star is because it's so bad it's almost entertaining.

Slow boring story with terrible acting set in an eternally warm, sunny, tropical location that's apparently in Leeds.

There is one attempt at a Yorkshire accent but Joey Tribiani could do a better job.

It also seemed to be filmed with 80s soap opera effect.

Nothing erotic about it and a very strange time scale, days, weeks and months seem totally interchangeable.

The more I write the more I wonder if this is in fact actually a very clever comedy that I just don't get

Hugh Dennis was the only saving grace but even that was touch and go - non pun intended.

Watch something else, this is a major dud

I only finished this show because maybe, maybe it will take a turn for the better. No. It actually takes a turn for the worse. Really bad script, all over the place direction and poor production values. Acting? Not so great either. Eleanor Tomlinson is greatly miscast. Sam Heughan takes his shirt off so I guess he'd done the part he was hired for. Jessica De Gouw and Alfred Enoch are adequate, though not sure why they accepted to be in this.

Instead of airing this atrocity maybe Starz should have bought the original Dutch series Nieuwe Buren. This one is a big fail. Save your time and watch something else.

Interesting miniseries

To be honest, it's not my type of series, although I decided to watch it because the English ones are usually pretty good. To start, the location confused me a lot, it seems like a good suburban neighborhood in America because of the materialism and the manners of the neighbors. Don't get me wrong, I'm just saying it as a compliment, for the English of course.

The first episode left me wanting more, and I just watched it until the end, it has something that hooks you. It is entertaining and exciting at various times, the police investigation and the religious theme kept me very intrigued. And just to make things a little more interesting, Becka is being stalked by Alan, a neighbour, the actor Hugh Denis, whom I mention and highlight for his excellent work, is the best performance in the series.

I didn't see any type of betrayal or secrets between the couples, the two participate in the sexy game, and later the psychopathic evolution of Evi, who is always laughing, is well done, but the continuous and annoying smile almost becomes a pantomime of a diabolical doll.

Like many other series, many of the decisions made are not at all realistic, and the ending, even so being very exciting, exceeds psychopathy and radical religious positions that never lead to anything good.

This short series may not be epic, but it remains watchable and exciting, offering a mix of entertainment and moments that really engage.

Started so well.

I thought this series was very well done for the first four episodes. It was interesting and intriguing with a great array of characters and various elements to the drama which ticked along nicely in the first four episodes. The blonde guy Sam was very attractive and Pete was a sweet charismatic person and then by the end of the drama part five and six everything started to fall apart. In that I mean the story, the characters, pretty much everything which is a shame as I believe a better more twisty realistic ending would have made this drama much more memorable and popular than it will be. That's my take on this.

Weak and unimpressive remake of the 2014 Dutch original

I watched the original Dutch TV version of this show which ran for 4 series 10x40m from 2014-2019. It was a bit cheesy at times but enjoyable with well-grounded characters and a dramatic storyline full of unexpected twists and some pretty raunchy scenes.

The remake seems to have been drained of drama and toned down and as a consequence comes a distant second to the original (Which was titled 'New Neighbours' but can still be found on C4 Catchup with subtitles as 'The Swingers'. If you haven't watched either definitely seek out the original.

The remake didn't feel authentic if felt tepid with a lot of one-dimensional performances, Hugh Dennis aside. For some reason it was shot in Leeds and The Netherlands and Belgium but meant to be set in Yorkshire, so a lot of it just looked plain wrong.

I'm afraid I very quickly lost all interest, it was naffly made in all respects, including acting, writing and direction.

Finale let down

It seems my review from s1 has been removed let's just say if was much better than season 2. The review of which is here.

The first 4 episodes had been quite watchable as long as you rake away thd fact that thd show blatantly wasn't filmed in Leeds or even the UK.

There has been less humour this second series but had been quite raunchy even if thd leading actresses kept their bras firmly on while seducing thd show's leading man but, then, as with all modern shows the PC rules take over and all white men are either weak or evil, ethnic minorities can do no wrong and women are beyond reproach (it dies see that white men can turn good as long as it is with an ethnic woman it seems).

I have been a fan of eagle eye drama despite them taking quality euro shows and ruining the and they manage to do the same here.

There should be no need for s3. S1 was enough.

Surprising, compelling TV

I actually don't like "sexy thrillers" and I expected this one to be as predictable and boring as many others before. What I didn't expect to see was such a surprising and exciting story and such wonderful acting. The whole cast is incredible and the twist and turns are fantastic. I went into it, believing we would see a nice couple and their creepy neighbours and in a way we did, but in the end it turned to be all upside down. Neither the sweet innocent, the nerd nor the stupid but hot af cop turned out to be what they seemed at the beginning. Only the swinging hippie Becka stayed actually true to herself. I was glued to the TV and many layers, many surprising character developments later I was afraid to start the last episode, because I rooted so much for my favourites and didn't want them hurt. Great show and compliments to all.

Slow and confusing

The actors as a whole are phenomenal but I don't think that is reflected in this show. It seems very over dramatised rather than it being 'realistic' and the storyline is very hard to follow. Also, is it not a British show? Because it is very Americanised from the town, home, decor, mannerisms. It seems very set like too, the homes were like show homes straight from ikea, everything was a little too 'perfect'. Maybe I was so bored of the show itself that I started noticing things outside of the actual storyline - but this show had potential yet past the first episode it was slow and dragged. The side characters had more realistic, better acting than the main characters.

One of the worst dramas I've seen in some time

Poorly directed with extreme overacting and total predictability

By the end of episode three I had grown to detest the main four characters. The acting was over-the-top from start to finish, and it was just too easy to see what was coming next. Hugh Dennis played a good part, as did his wife. Even the nosey neighbour who was one of the swingers in 'Benidorm' was reasonable, but I found everybody else to be quite wooden

There were decent side-plots throughout, but it was so badly directed, and so predictable, that it ruined what could have been a decent drama

I only watched it through to the end because I'd invested time in it and I felt it owed me.

Nothing original....best thing is Alfred Enoch!!

I watched this hoping it would be good and the first couple of episodes were OK. It starts off fine but then loses its way with some unconvincing acting by everyone except Alfred Enoch. Why he agreed to make this series is beyond me as he is a superb actor of great strength (take a look at his work in USA) Alfred Enoch simmers under the shock behaviour of his wayward wife and I am surprised they were even together as they seemed so ill matched Make your own mind up but if I was given a choice I would have given this a miss! There are plenty of great shows and this just misses the mark as it's predictable and nothing new.....

Good...until the last episode

I likened "The Couple Next Door" to a Lifetime movie, in that there are a few people behaving badly with some credulity-stretching plot lines, but ultimately are entertaining when you want to watch something uncomplicated.

Sam Heughan and Eleanor Tomlinson have great chemistry. The rest of the cast is mostly attractive or at least interesting. There are a few good sub-plots bubbling along.

Then we get to the sixth and final episode, after the fifth one nicely worked everything up to a crescendo, and...wow, flat.

What a waste of a series finale and, as a result, the series itself.

The main plot had kind of a cop-out ending, the sub plots definitely had what you would call surprising endings - and they came with precisely zero in the way of explanation or on-screen consequence, which was a let down.

Also, it ended far too abruptly for my liking. Literally three or four extra minutes could have answered some of the lingering questions.

I'm disappointed.

Couldn't give the series more than six stars overall because of the way it ended.
