El Festival Internacional de Cine de Toronto, que celebra su 50.ª edición del 4 al 14 de septiembre, ha anunciado los primeros títulos que integrarán sus dos secciones principales: Galas y Proyecciones Especiales. The directorial debuts of comedian Aziz Ansari, “Euphoria” breakout Maude Apatow, “Succession” star Brian Cox and “Split” actor James McAvoy will world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival.

Ansari’s action comedy “Good Fortune,” Apatow’s coming-of-age comedy “Poetic License,” Cox’s British drama “Glenrothan” and McAvoy’s musical biopic “California Schemin'” are among the new additions to the TIFF lineup. Other films that will host world premieres at the annual Canadian-based gathering include Alex Winter’s “Adulthood” and Bobby Farrelly’s “Driver’s Ed.”

Meanwhile Benny Safdie’s “The Smashing Machine,” a wrestling drama starring Dwayne the Rock Johnson and Emily Blunt, and Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein” will have their North American premieres at TIFF. Those movies have yet to announce where the world premieres will take place, though it’s likely the Venice Film Festival.

Guillermo del Toro’s “Frankenstein,” Edward Berger’s “Ballad of a Small Player,” Bobby Farrelly’s “Driver’s Ed,” Brian Cox’s “Glenrothan,” Gus Van Sant’s “Dead Man’s Wire,” Richard Linklater’s “Nouvelle Vague” and Baz Luhrmann’s “EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert” will screen in the Galas and Special Presentations sections of the 2025 Toronto international Film Festival, TIFF organizers announced on Monday.

Those films were among the more than 50 new movies that were added to the robust TIFF lineup. Previously, the festival had announced 17 other galas and special premieres, including Chloé Zhao’s “Hamnet,” Derek Cianfrance’s “Roofman,” Steven Soderbergh’s “The Christophers,” Agnieszka Holland’s “Franz,” Paul Greengrass’ “The Lost Bus” and Rian Johnson’s “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery.” The festival will open with Colin Hanks’ documentary “John Candy: I Like Me.”

A Dr. Seuss classic is getting a feature film adaptation. On Tuesday, Warner Bros. Pictures announced that Ariana Grande and Josh Gad will star in an animated film version of Oh, the Places You’ll Go!, set to release on March 17, 2028.

Jon. M Chu is set to direct the film, with Benj Pasek and Justin Paul — the Oscar and Tony-winning duo behind Dear Evan Hansen, La La Land, and Snow White — handling the music.

Exclusive: Comedian Ari Shaffir has struck a two-special deal with Netflix, announcing a January 14 global debut for the first hour, Ari Shaffir: America’s Sweetheart.

Shaffir’s specials will be his 2nd and 3rd with the streamer, on the heels of 2017’s Ari Shaffir: Double Negative, and his fifth overall. Taped at Capital Turnaround in Washington, D.C. earlier this year, America’s Sweetheart‘s logline is as follows: From the joys of domestic terrorism, to the genius of Kanye West, Ari Shaffir figures out a way to find the positive in gun violence, racism, censorship, political upheaval gay rights, antisemitism and opioid abuse in this hilarious and darkly uplifting stand-up comedy special.

His latest feature directorial effort is Adulthood, which is described as a darkly comic modern noir – and Variety reports that Adulthood has secured a U.S. and Canada distribution deal with Republic Pictures. A release date has not yet been announced.

SAG-AFTRA’s top negotiator has hit back at remarks by outgoing Sony Pictures CEO Tony Vinciquerra that the length of last year’s Hollywood strikes and new contract terms have pushed production out of the United States.

“Threatening the offshoring of American jobs is a cynical attempt to manipulate workers while masking the industry’s own business failures,” said the Guild’s national executive director and chief negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland.

“It is a false narrative that American workers have to choose between fair wages and contracts and losing their jobs. Our members won’t be fooled.”

Republic Pictures has nabbed U.S. and Canadian rights to “Adulthood,” directed by Alex Winter and penned by novelist Michael M.B. Galvin.

Described as darkly comic and modern-noir, “Adulthood” follows sister and brother Megan and Noah who are barely hanging on in present-day America. When they discover a dead body, long buried in their parents’ basement, the siblings are pulled back to the hometown they ran away from and into a rabbit hole of crime and murder.

“I couldn’t be more excited to be working with Republic Pictures for the North American sales and release of our film,” said Winter. “They have great instincts and are dedicated to quality indie movies.”

The cast includes Josh Gad (“Gutenberg! The Musical!”), Kaya Scodelario (“The Gentlemen”), Billie Lourd (Booksmart), Anthony Carrigan (“Barry”) and Winter, best known for the long-running hit “Bill & Ted” franchise, including 2020’s “Bill & Ted Face the Music.

Paramount and the revived Republic Pictures are betting on indie films to complement their tentpole movies like Mission Impossible and Gladiator II.

The studio’s chief content licensing officer Dan Cohen spoke at a MIPCOM Media Mastermind Keynote Session in Cannes Tuesday afternoon, confirming the U.S. and Canadian rights to their “Coen brothers-esque” noir film Adulthood, directed by Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure Star Alex Winter, has been picked up by Republic Pictures.

“You get an announcement today,” Cohen, also president of Republic Pictures, told World Screen’s Anna Carugati, who was moderating. “We have a film coming called Adulthood. It’s a bit of a Coen brothers-esque [story]. It stars Josh Gad and Kaya Scodelario. It’s a really fun movie. We also have a film called Bad Apples coming from Saoirse Ronan, a four-time Oscar nominee and I think a good actor working today.”

Paramount Global label Republic Pictures taken US and Canadian distribution rights to Alex Winter-directed Adulthood.

The parent company revived the Republic label in 2023 with a remit to acquire third-party fare. Paramount Global’s chief content licensing officer Dan Cohen is also president of Republic Pictures.

Cohen shared news of the acquisition in a keynote address at Mipcom today.

Cohen described Adulthood as a Coen Brothers-esque caper gone wrong. It stars Josh Gad, Kaya Scodelario,Anthony Carrigan and Winter himself, who is known for playing Bill in Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure. “But what he really is is a director.

The stars of the Bill & Ted movies, Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter, are going to star together again. This time, they will be starring in a Broadway production of Samuel Beckett’s Waiting for Godot directed by Jamie Lloyd, as part of the 2025-26 season of Atg Theatre in the fall of 2025.

Reeves will play Estragon, while Winter will play Vladimir. They announced the roles in a joint statement: “We’re incredibly excited to be on stage together and work with the great Jamie Lloyd in one of our favorite plays.”

The Jamie Lloyd Company, Atg Productions, Bad Robot Live, and Gavin Kalin Productions collaborated on the production of “Waiting for Godot,” with 101 Productions acting as general manager.

UK actor and filmmaker Noel Clarke is reported to be suing UK newspaper The Guardian for £10m damages over articles about his alleged behaviour towards some 20 women.

Clarke, whose credits include Brotherhood, Adulthood and Bulletproof, was accused of groping and sexual misconduct between 2004 and 2019 by 20 women who had worked with him. He has denied all the allegations.

A letter calling for a shakeup in the culture of the UK film and TV industry, penned in response to the accusations made against actor and producer Noel Clarke last week, has attracted more than 800 signatures at the time of writing.

The letter has been penned by Meriel Beale, a freelance producer, anti-bullying campaigner and harassment officer at Bectu.

The text responds to the allegations against Clarke – which come from 20+ women and range from sending unsolicited explicit images to filming a nude audition without consent – by questioning how such actions have become normalized and even accepted widely in the UK biz.

Clarke has denied the accusations of sexual misconducts but has also said he will seek “professional help”. At the weekend, it was confirmed by BBC News that a complaint had been made to Met police of alleged sexual offences against a man understood to be Clarke.
