The first season of Peacemaker was a fun and unexpected addition to the Dceu right as the cinematic universe ended. Fast-forward a couple of years, and Peacemaker creator James Gunn is now co-leading DC Studios and has released the first chapters in the series, Creature Commandos and Superman. In comes the second season of Peacemaker, which is somehow in the Dcu as well as the Dceu. Either way, it is a fantastic new season of mature madness!

The second season of Peacemaker follows Christopher Smith (John Cena) as he struggles to find his place in the world as a hero, with all the baggage left over from his actions that have led to this point.

Peacemaker season 2 established that James Gunn’s Dcu has a general distrust of metahumans, similar to the mutants in the X-Men comics and movies. The show, which stars John Cena and is completely written by Gunn, is the third entry in the Dcu, which began with Creature Commandos and made its big-screen debut with Superman.

Peacemaker Season 2 is right around the corner, three and a half years after the foul-mouthed antihero – played by WWE legend John Cena – had his debut on television. James Gunn, co-head of DC Studios and creator of the show, held a premiere in New York City on August 13, treating fans to five episodes of the new season.

I really don’t want what’s in those last three episodes to be spoiled, so I’m keeping them close to the chest. I won’t even let my publicist see them.

James Gunn looked visibly excited for the final episodes, stating that they were the favourite things he’s ever done, “like of all time”. Gunn expressed that he did not want any spoilers to get leaked from the now multiversal second season.

Peacemaker Season 2 is just days away from releasing on HBO Max, and James Gunn recently made the creative decision to take Superman to streaming. The Dcu creator reasoned that he wanted a wider audience to watch David Corenswet‘s first outing before they stepped into the world of the second season of his 2022 show.

Speaking to Brandon Davis of PhaseHero, Gunn shared that he won't even let his publicist see the last three installments.

"There's a lot of major twists and turns in the last three episodes. And even though I've only sent the first five to a select few, things still get out. Things got out already, [if] people want to search, they can be spoiled on purpose. With 28 reviews counted on Rotten Tomatoes, the show has a perfect 100% score. Most critics seem to agree that it's as good as season 1, though whether it's better remains to be seen. Many of the reviews with star ratings are mostly of the 3* - 4* variety, suggesting there's some room for improvement.

Regardless, critics get to choose "Fresh" or "Rotten" when they submit their verdicts, and with everyone so far choosing the former, Peacemaker season 2 is officially "Certified Fresh."

For comparison's sake, Peacemaker season 1 is "Certified Fresh" at 93%. The Suicide Squad, meanwhile, has a 90% score, and Superman hit the review aggregator earlier this year with 83%. DC Studios' last small-screen project, the animated Creature Commandos, is rated 95%.

As James Gunn is known to do, the live-action DC show took a group of misfits, most of whom were obscure characters, and made them popular. Peacemaker season 2 is the first live-action series in Gunn's DC Universe.

The first reactions to Peacemaker season 2 tease an even deeper exploration of its characters, with the dynamic between Peacemaker and Emilia Harcourt growing more complex, and many surprises in store. When it comes to reviews, DC did not have the best track record with the Dceu movie franchise. However, the Dcu's Chapter One is turning the tide, and Peacemaker continues that.

Rotten Tomatoes has revealed its score for Peacemaker season 2, which debuts at a mighty 100%. The TV-ma series has been Certified Fresh, based on 28 reviews at the time of writing.

The DC Universe kicked off this summer with Superman, after getting a short teaser with the animated series Creature Commandos late last year. While both these titles were new additions to James Gunn and Peter Safran's new Dcu, one project from the former DC Extended Universe carried over: Peacemaker.

Led by John Cena as the titular character, previously introduced in Gunn's 2021's The Suicide Squad, the superhero series was a success when it came out in 2022. However, it was a long time until fans got to see what happened to Peacemaker and his crew, but it looks like the wait paid off. Ahead of Peacemaker Season 2's release on Aug. 21, the new season debuted with a perfect 100% Rotten Tomatoes score.

While Creature Commandos and Superman served as the official launches of the Dcu’s cinematic and television beginnings, Peacemaker remained an uncertainty. Not an uncertainty regarding its expected quality, but regarding how it would fit into the newly established universe. Peacemaker’s transition from the old Dceu to James Gunn and Peter Safran’s Dcu is a simple one, accomplished through some creative rewriting of a major moment from season one.

While the show was announced some three years ago, James Gunn admits that The Suicide Squad's next spinoff, Waller, is taking longer than expected. Having debuted as the iconic DC character in 2016's Suicide Squad, Viola Davis has carried the role of A.R.G.U.S. director Amanda Waller through Gunn's standalone sequel, Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam, and the first seasons of Peacemaker and Creature Commandos.

Following her appearance in the former TV show, it was announced that a Waller spinoff show was in the works at HBO Max, with Christal Henry writing and showrunning alongside Doom Patrol's Jeremy Carver. In the years since, though, the show has moved at a slower pace, particularly following Gunn and Peter Safran's hiring as the new DC Studios bosses and launching the DC Universe reboot.

James Gunn’s Peacemaker season 2 finished filming last year in November 2024, with the creator tweeting and posting on Instagram during production. The DC boss shared a photo of a custom “eat peace” coffee cup during the filming and later posted on X, writing,

And because the show follows Superman chronologically, some elements from the wider Dcu will bleed in. Rick Flag Sr.’s appearance in Creature Commandos and Frank Grillo’s casting suggest connected threads, but Gunn is treating crossovers as narrative seasoning rather than the main meal. The result should be a season that plays big in scope while keeping the story personal.

After nearly a month of release, James Gunn’s Superman has pulled in over $580 million (and counting) at the global box office. James Gunn has big plans for one of the DC Universe's upcoming shows, saying that fans will be "whacked out" at the new developments when new episodes of Creature Commandos drop.

In an interview with Straw Hat Goofy shared on Instagram, Gunn revealed that there will be some pretty big changes coming to Creature Commandos Season 2. "I just met with Dean [Lorey] on Creature Commandos, Season 2," Gunn shared. "Real big priority for us. People are gonna be whacked out by all of the superheroes we're adding." Gunn also took the time to tease some of the Dcu's other big upcoming projects, including Supergirl starring Milly Alcock and the HBO series Lanterns, which recently got its own big casting update.
