James Vanderbilt on Pitting Russell Crowe Against Rami Malek in TIFF Thriller ‘Nuremberg’
Image
Oscar winners Russell Crowe and Rami Malek are engaging in a psychological game of chess in writer-director James Vanderbilt’s historical drama Nuremberg that chronicles the efforts to bring the Nazi high command to justice after World War II in the Nuremberg Trials.

“The year is 1945. Adolf Hitler is dead, and the Second World War is drawing to a close. Several figures within the Nazi high command have been apprehended by the Allies — among them the eerily charismatic Hermann Göring (Crowe),” one of the most powerful figures in Hitler’s Nazi Party, reads a synopsis for the movie, which world premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sunday, Sept. 7. “U.S. Lt. Colonel Douglas Kelley (Malek), an army psychiatrist, is called in to evaluate the Nazi captives. He sees his directive as an opportunity to psychologically define evil, helping to ensure that such atrocities are never repeated while providing...

Kurt Russell Had To Drag James Spader Out Of His Trailer For Stargate
Image
It's fair to say no one goes to a Roland Emmerich movie expecting Shakespeare. Ever since breaking through with the sci-fi action hit "Universal Soldier" in 1992, his name has been synonymous with switch-off-your-brain blockbuster entertainment. At his best, he thrusts a colorful assortment of stars and character actors into a series of mayhem-laden set pieces with a gleeful shamelessness unseen since the heyday of Irwin Allen. He's well aware of his dialogue-writing shortcomings, and casts big personalities like Will Smith, Jeff Goldblum, Judd Hirsch, Oliver Platt and so on to sell the heck out of his implausible exposition and shopworn banter.

When it works, it's Arby's. When it doesn't,...

This 52% Rotten Tomatoes Action Flick Featuring ‘Deadpool’ and ‘Spider-Man’ Stars Has Just Exploded Onto a New Streamer
Image
Although their paths may not have crossed in the MCU (not yet anyway), Deadpool & Wolverine’s Channing Tatum and Spider-Man: No Way Home’s Jamie Foxx once put it all on the line in a gritty action thriller. Pressing the gas pedal down to the floor and steering subscribers directly into the summer blockbuster season, Netflix is officially the new home of White House Down. Though perhaps overshadowed by other similar blockbusters of the time, like the Gerard Butler and Morgan Freeman-led Olympus Has Fallen, the 2013 title has enjoyed a resurgence in recent years thanks to its appearance on streaming platforms, bringing the high-octane story to an entirely new set of eyes.

Trying to win favor in the eyes of his daughter, single father, John Cale (Tatum) scores tickets to a one-of-a-kind tour of the White House. An Afghanistan veteran, John now works as a Capitol policeman but...

Jake Gyllenhaal's Underrated Disaster Movie 'The Day After Tomorrow' Is Now Streaming
Image
The Day After Tomorrow, the disaster movie of 2004 starring Jake Gyllenhaal, has landed a new streaming home. Starting on July 1, Hulu subscribers can stream the thriller directed by Roland Emmerich, and considered by many to be one of the best movies by the director of both Independence Day movies, Anonymous and White House Down.

The film is not a direct adaptation, but inspired by Art Bell and Whitley Strieber's book The Coming Global Superstorm, a fictional book that explores the possibility of climate change producing a sudden worldwide apocalypse. It was adapted by Emmerich himself, who co-wrote the film with Jeffrey Nachmanoff. The Day After Tomorrow stars Gyllenhaal alongside Dennis Quaid, Sela Ward, Emmy Rossum, Ian Holm, Austin Nichols, and Dash Mihok.

The story focuses on a climatologist who has been warning authorities about a possible worldwide collapse due to global warming. As it always happens in disaster films,...

One Of The Best Die Hard Rip-Offs Ever Was An Episode Of Star Trek: The Next Generation
Image
In the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Starship Mine", the U.S.S. Enterprise has to undergo a massive, shipwide maintenance routine that requires every single living being -- including the plants -- to be cleared off the ship. It seems that, in its many merry adventures, the Enterprise has taken on a great deal of toxic particles that need to be cleared from the ship's systems. The best way to do this is to run a slow-moving wall of concentrated baryon particles through the entire starship. The field is lethal to organic materials, so everyone has to get off the Enterprise immediately. It's the sci-fi equivalent of getting one's house tented for termites.

This leaves the Enterprise's senior staff in the care of one Commander Calvin Hutchinson (David Spielberg), who aims to pass the time with an extended reception on the planet below. A chatterbox of the highest order,...

Guy Ritchie’s ‘Fountain of Youth’ Fails To Find Treasure With Disappointing Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Guy Ritchie’s new movie will premiere on Apple TV+ tomorrow, and fans everywhere are curious to see if the legendary action director’s new film is worth watching. The review embargo for Fountain of Youth lifted earlier today, and reviews for the film began pouring in, painting a picture of what kind of adventure Ritchie has crafted for his next directorial outing. Unfortunately, the film has earned enough scores to be given a 38% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. This comes from 26 reviews at the time of writing, which is a relatively small sample size that still leaves room for change. However, it’s enough to give it the dreaded “rotten” label on the aggregate site. An audience score on the Popcornmeter won’t be revealed until at least tomorrow, once the film is streaming on Apple TV+.

Leading the charge in the Fountain of Youth cast is John Krasinski,...

Cleaner
Image
Every generation gets its own Die Hard. So potent is the power of John McClane that the animated comedy Rick And Morty even devoted an entire episode to Rick imploring his teenage granddaughter to “do a Die Hard” in a space station. We’ve had Die Hard on a bus (Speed), Die Hard on a boat (Speed 2: Cruise Control), Die Hard on a different boat (Under Siege), Die Hard on a train (Under Siege 2), Die Hard in a couple of White Houses, Die Hard in various planes etc etc etc. Yet until the arrival of Cleaner, a new ostensibly original homegrown British action movie, we’d never really had a Die Hard in London.

On paper, there is much cause for optimism for Cleaner. The film is directed by veteran filmmaker Martin Campbell, responsible for two of the best James Bond films ever made (GoldenEye and Casino Royale...

Prime Video's New No. 1 Movie Features The Boys' Homelander Actor As The Villain
Image
He's spent the last six years putting the fear in fans of superhero shows, courtesy of a milk addiction and a dead-eyed stare that comes with laser vision, but now, "The Boys" award-nominated villain, Antony Starr, has gone bad in a feature-length film over at Prime Video. And according to FlixPatrol, this movie has quickly shot to the streaming service's number one spot.

Joining the niche genre of presidential protagonists that get up to their elbows in an action-packed story is Viola Davis in "G20." Directed by Patricia Riggen, the film sees Davis as US President and Army veteran Danielle Sutton, who gets caught up in a hostage situation during the G20 summit. Heading up the operation of holding world leaders at gunpoint is Rutledge (Starr), a former Australian Special Forces operative who is willing to send the free world into chaos if his demands aren't met.

‘G20’ Review: President Viola Davis Beats Up Economy-Crashing Baddies in Ramshackle ‘Die Hard’ Riff
Image
Viola Davis is one of the most accomplished actors of her generation. Come to think of it, she’s one of the most accomplished actors of any generation. Respected, beloved, she’s given her heart and soul to powerful dramas that enrich the human spirit. But sometimes she also wants to beat the crap out of bad guys, and gosh danged it, good for her. Every great actor should get their own “Die Hard” knockoff at least once. I’d pay good money to watch Glenn Close kick the crap out of mercenaries on a zeppelin, wouldn’t you?

“G20” isn’t remotely as powerful, thrilling, or groundbreaking as “The Woman King,” but that’s a tall order. It stars Viola Davis as President Danielle Sutton, a war hero about to introduce a new plan at the international G20 summit to save impoverished people the world over by some-something-something cryptocurrency.

‘G20’ Review: Viola Davis Emerges Unscathed From a Preposterous President-as-Action-Hero Movie
Image
From “The Woman King” to Madam President, Viola Davis’ growing roster of fierce commander-in-chief roles reveals a star who takes the words “leading lady” literally, no matter what skepticism audiences may show. The internet seems to have rolled its collective eyes at the idea of Davis in ’90s-style action showcase “G20,” but there’s no actor on earth who could play such a gung-ho U.S. president without some degree of blowback … since there’s no president in U.S. history who’d stand a chance against a G20 summit-disrupting psycho determined to crash the global economy. (Supply your own tariff joke here.)

Clearly reflecting the other candidate in the most recent election, Davis does a fine job of embodying Danielle Sutton, a war hero whose military training and protect-the-little-guy instincts make her an ideal foil for the ruthless Rutledge (Antony Starr). Rutledge has a plan to turn $70 million in...

Channing Tatum Felt Traumatised After Gambit Was Shelved & Admitted He Avoided Watching Marvel Films For Years
Image
Channing Tatum Gambit Trauma (Photo Credit – Instagram)

For Channing Tatum, Marvel movies weren’t just entertainment, they were a reminder of what could’ve been. The actor once poured years of passion and effort into a solo Gambit film, only to watch it crumble. And that sting stuck around.

“I haven’t been able to see any of the [Marvel] movies [since],” Tatum told Variety back in 2022. “I loved that character. It was just too sad. It was like losing a friend because I was so ready to play him.”

That heartbreak started way back in 2014. Tatum had been cast as Gambit, the smooth-talking, card-slinging mutant from the X-Men universe. The plan? Introduce him in X-Men: Apocalypse and follow it up with a solo film. But the rollout never happened.

'So Wrong': Taylor Sheridan & Denis Villeneuve's 10-Year-Old Action Film Blasted by Special Ops Expert
Image
Nowadays, Taylor Sheridan is largely known for his Yellowstone universe, as well as other Paramount+ shows, while Denis Villeneuve is synonymous with Dune. However, years back, they worked together on the critically acclaimed and commercially successful Sicario.

Both filmmakers have received praise for their individual projects, but Sicario was a major hit and is considered to be one of the best action films dealing with CIA operatives. The movie stars Academy Award nominee Emily Blunt in the leading role as an FBI agent who receives a task to bring down the leader of a Mexican drug cartel. Although the movie has been a major hit, Bob Keller, an army special ops solider analyzed the scenes in the action film and shared why the action is unlikely in a video for Insider.

The former US Army Special Forces and Delta Force operator looked at different scenes from popular movies and TV shows that feature special operations,...

Viola Davis Reveals Why She Signed on To Become an Action Star in 'G20'
Image
The name Viola Davis has become synonymous with dramatic roles thanks to her Academy Award-nominated performances in films like The Help, Ma Rainey's Black Bottom, and Doubt. Winning the Best Supporting Actress trophy for her portrayal of Rose Lee Maxson in 2017's Fences, folks were a little surprised when it was revealed that Davis would be leading the action flick G20 for Amazon, and now, one of the greatest actors of her generation is revealing why she decided to trade tears and tissues for some tactical butt kicking.

Chatting with The Times of London, Davis spoke about what it was that drew her to G20, in which she plays American president Danielle Sutton, a woman who finds herself defending her family, and her fellow world leaders in Cape Town, South Africa, when the titular summit is besieged by terrorists. If there was any doubt as to who saves the day,...

Viola Davis Did an Action Movie Because Not ‘Every Movie You Do Has to Be Considered for an Academy Award. I Want to Do Something Popular’
Image
Viola Davis is an Egot winner and is widely considered one of the greatest dramatic actors of her generation, which is why some people are confused about “G20.” The straight-to-streaming Prime Video movie casts Davis in a “White House Down”-style action movie. She plays a U.S. president who becomes the target of an attack during the eponymous world leaders summit. But this president knows how to be an action star and can save herself. Move over, Secret Service.

Speaking to The Times of London, Davis defended her choice to star in a shoot-em-up action movie despite her award-winning bonafides. As she simply put it: “I don’t think every movie you do has to be considered for an Academy Award. I wanted to do something that families could watch together, something popular.”

Davis was the first Black woman to win the Emmy for leading actress in a drama series,...

'Snow White' Officially Beats 'Mirror Mirror's Entire Box Office Total in Only Two Weeks
Image
Armageddon and Deep Impact, Olympus Has Fallen and White House Down, Friends with Benefits and No Strings Attached. These are only three examples of two movies with broadly similar themes being released in the same year. Among the most recent instances of this happening was in 2012, when two wildly different visions of the Snow White fable — Mirror Mirror and Snow White and the Huntsman — were released to roughly the same critical response in theaters. A couple of weeks ago, Disney unveiled its mega-budget live-action remake of Snow White to muted audience response and mediocre reviews. The movie also attracted a massive controversy following political comments made by its lead, Rachel Zegler. But despite the noise, Snow White has now overtaken Mirror Mirror's entire domestic run.

In just 10 days of release, Snow Whitehas generated nearly $67 million. By comparison, Mirror Mirror concluded its domestic run with $64 million back in 2012. Directed by Tarsem Singh Dhandwar,...

Channing Tatum first rose to fame thanks to his unbeatable dancing skills. Many of his hit films included dancing, like 2006's Step Up, or the Magic Mike franchise, where he was extremely fit.

Over the years, his acting credits featured more diverse roles than the aforementioned, but he continued to star in movies that required him to be in shape, including the role of Duke in the action films G.I. Joe, 2012's 21 Jump Street, and 2013's White House Down. He finally played his dream superhero role, Gambit, in 2024's Deadpool & Wolverine. The actor has branched out to other roles since but revealed on Instagram that he wouldn't accept more "fat roles" after showing off his ripped physique.

Remember When Charlize Theron, Chris Hemsworth, and Julia Roberts Fought in The Great Snow White Movie War of 2012?
Image
There are several instances in film history in which two films with seemingly identical premises are released within several months of each other, sparking confusion among general audiences and comparisons from seasoned film pundits. Both Armageddonand Deep Impacttold asteroid-centric stories in 1998, competing disaster films Volcano and Dante’s Peak debuted in 1997, both Olympus Has Fallen and White House Down used the “Die Hard in the White House” premise in 2013, and families interested in animated insect comedies had to choose between Antz and A Bug’s Lifein 1998. These 2 Iconic Movies Accidentally Tell the Same Story (But Were Released 40 Years Apart)
Image
The concept of "twin films" has recently caught the attention of movie fans on social media. Twin films are a pair of movies with shockingly similar concepts that release in the same year. This phenomenon usually happens as a result of some cultural event bringing an idea to the forefront of the Hollywood hivemind, and two different studios entering development without awareness of each other. Some famous and funny examples include 2006's The Prestige and The Illusionist, two films about 19th century magicians, 2013's White House Down and Olympus Has Fallen, two films about attacks on the White House, and 2011's Friends with Benefits and No Strings Attached, two films about friendships turned hook-ups. Somehow, someway, these filmmakers settle on the same exact idea, and end up having to race to get their film released.

While slightly less notable, it's also interesting when films released decades apart somehow stumble upon similar terrain.

Jamie Foxx Praises Back In Action’s ‘Evolution of Stunt Work’
Cameron Diaz at an event for The Teen Choice Awards 2009 (2009)
Back In Action. (L to R) Cameron Diaz as Emily and Jamie Foxx as Matt in Back In Action. Cr. John Wilson/Netflix © 2024. Jamie Foxx, an Oscar winner known for electrifying performances across genres, is no stranger to action-packed films. From his intense role in White House Down to the vampire-hunting thrills of Day Shift and his turn as Electro in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Foxx has seen—and been part of—some truly remarkable stunt work. But according to him, his latest project, Back in Action, showcases the evolution of stunt work in a way that left him thoroughly impressed. The action-comedy, which marks the on-screen reunion of Foxx and Cameron Diaz, is packed with adrenaline-pumping sequences. Diaz, herself a veteran of action films like Charlie’s Angels and Knight and Day, certainly knows her way around high-octane stunts. Still, even with their combined experience, both stars were blown away...

It’s President Viola Davis vs. Homelander in the new trailer for the Prime Video action film G20
Image
From time to time, sometimes the President gets in on the action themselves as they take matters into their own hands with movies like Independence Day, White House Down and, of course, Air Force One. Additionally, the movie Widows showed that Viola Davis was capable of crossing over into the action genre. Now, the Academy Award-winning actress goes full-on Harrison Ford as a President who takes on a group of terrorists in the new trailer for G20. Prime Video has released the new trailer where Davis goes up against The Boys‘ Antony Starr.

The official plot synopsis reads,

“When the G20 summit comes under siege, U.S. President Danielle Sutton (Academy Award winner Viola Davis) becomes the number one target. After evading capture by the attackers, she must outsmart the enemy to protect her family, defend her country and safeguard world leaders in this action-packed thrill ride.”

Channing Tatum, Jamie Foxx, and Maggie Gyllenhaal's Wild Political Action Thriller Is a Must-Watch — And Free
Image
There are times when two movies release within the same year that more or less share the same plot, with one of the most glaring instances being when White House Down was released in the same year as Olympus Has Fallen. But while the two share the same basic story of "The President comes under attack from outside forces, and only one skilled soldier can save him," they're wildly different. For starters, White House Down actually has its president, James Sawyer (Jamie Foxx) get in on the action. Secondly, it features all of the over the top bombast one would come to expect from a Roland Emmerichmovie. White House Down just jumped from Netflix to Tubi, meaning that action fans have a new film to add to their watchlist.

Action Movie 'White House Down' With Channing Tatum Is Streaming Free From Next Month

Volcano and Dante's Peak. Deep Impact and Armageddon. Hollywood sometimes offers up these pairs of similar cinematic experiences, and one such example, the action outing White House Down, is all set to stream for free next month. As you can now ascertain from the title, White House Down’s cinematic partner is the Gerard Butler-led Olympus Has Fallen, both of which were released in 2013. Directed by the master of the disaster movie, Roland Emmerich and written by James Vanderbilt, White House Down stars Channing Tatum alongside Jamie Foxx as James Sawyer, President of the United States, with the pair finding themselves under attack during a White House tour. 4 Netflix films to watch (and 2 to skip) that are leaving at the end of January
Image
A bunch of good films have already left Netflix in January. This makes sense as the streamer believes it's just good business to have a month start mostly anew. The turn of the month means new stuff to view, and room needs to be made.

Still, there are several movies that will be leaving Netflix in January, but we have until January 31 to watch the six films below. Or, you know, skip two of them. The decision is yours but just be forewarned that some of the films are good, and the others, not so much.

So what to watch and what to skip? We have some ideas. Just don't hate us if you disagree. (Please.)

January 31 Will Be a Devastating Day for Channing Tatum Fans
Image
Channing Tatum fans will soon be unable to watch three of the star's most popular films on Netflix. 21 and 22 Jump Street and White House Down are all leaving the platform Jan. 31.

Tatum played an undercover cop in the action-comedy films 21 Jump Street and 22 Jump Street. The buddy cop films saw Tatum starring alongside Jonah Hill as the two go undercover to try and arrest drug suppliers. The first film was released in 2012 and put Tatum and Hill's characters in a high school setting, with other cast members including Brie Larson, Dave Franco, Rob Riggle and Ice Cube. The film was a success, grossing over $200 million at the box office with a modest budget of around $42 million, prompting a sequel to soon follow.

Channing Tatum Fans Are Running Out of Time To Watch Three of His Most Beloved Movies
Image
It’s been a terrific year for Channing Tatum fans who got to see the actor play three very different roles and even live out a dream along the way in Fly Me to the Moon, Deadpool & Wolverine, and Blink Twice. A man of many talents, the celebrated actor has long been able to jump across genres and give his all in every performance. Right now is the perfect time for audiences to see exactly what we mean, as Tatum has two comedies and an action-packed drama currently streaming on Netflix. But with the good news, there’s also some bad news as time is running out for subscribers to check out 21 Jump Street, 22 Jump Street, and White House Down, which will all leave the platform on January 31.

The Correct Order To Watch Gerard Butler's Has Fallen Franchise
Image
In 2013, there were two high-profile Hollywood movies about terrorists invading the White House, and the brave Secret Service agents who stepped forward to protect a beleaguered President. On June 28, Roland Emmerich's excellent "White House Down" was released in theaters, and it starred Channing Tatum as the beleaguered agent, and Jamie Foxx as the president. The bad guy terrorist was played by Jason Clarke. "White House Down" also starred Maggie Gyllenhaal, Joey King, and Richard Jenkins. It was, for my money, one of the best films of 2013.

A broader audience, however, better remembers Antoine Fuqua's "Olympus Has Fallen," which beat "White House Down" to theaters by about three months. "Olympus Has Fallen" starred Gerard Butler as the beleaguered agent and Aaron Eckhart as the President. The bad guy terrorist was played by Rick Yune. The cast of "Olympus" contained more uncut starpower than "White House," as Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd,...

How Does 'Paris Has Fallen' Tie to the 'Olympus Has Fallen' Universe?
Image
In 2013, two films were released, both of which featured the White House being overtaken by terrorists, and both leaving the fate of their respective presidents in the hands of one man with something to prove: Olympus Has Fallen and White House Down. The former stars Gerard Butler as a disgraced Secret Service agent looking to save the U.S. President, played by Morgan Freeman, while the latter features Channing Tatum as a US Capitol Police officer looking to save the U.S. President, played by Jamie Foxx. The differences between the two are negligible, but it would be Olympus Has Fallen that won over moviegoers, with the film taking in triple its budget, while White House Down barely broke even. The success of Olympus opened the door for two sequels, 2016's London Has Fallen and 2019's Angel Has Fallen, mercifully saving us from Eiffel Tower Down or MoMA Down. The...

‘Paris Has Fallen’ Review: Hulu’s Attempt At A Fresh Franchise Spin-Off Is Average At Best
Image
Many have tried, and many have failed; the tale of the “∫” knockoff remains as old as time, at the very least since 1988 when the action pioneer made its way into the public consciousness and initiated that exhaustive debate still ongoing as to whether it exists a Christmas film. This exhaustive, endless list surely warrants its own article, and in 2013 B-movie dynamo Gerard Butler took on the starring role in yet another, that being Antoine Fuqua‘s “Olympus Has Fallen,” one of two “White House under Siege” films of the year (alongside Roland Emmerich‘s “White House Down“), and debatably a far more fun effort; “Olympus Has Fallen” remains an enjoyable throwback to the glory days of ’80s and ’90s-era schlock, crammed with the perfect blend of cheese, genuinely thrilling setpieces and Butler’s well-timed one-liners without any one element overwhelming the others. Unsurprisingly, a franchise would soon emerge, with 2016’s...

Sandra Bullock & Channing Tatum Made One Of The Best Rom-Coms In The Past 5 Years - And It's Now Streaming On Netflix
Image
Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum's The Lost City is one of the best rom-coms of the past five years and is finally available to stream on Netflix. Bullock and Tatum lead the cast of The Lost City, which also features performances by Daniel Radcliffe, Brad Pitt, Oscar Nuez of The Office, and Oscar-winner Da'Vine Joy Randolph. The Lost City is full of great quotes that make it one of the most overlooked comedies of the 2020s.

The Lost City received solid reviews as a charming, old-school adventure upon its March 25, 2022 release date. The film belongs in the same vein as other jungle action-adventure films such as Jumanji and Jungle Cruise, providing a familiar setting that viewers can easily fall into. Bullock and Tatum make for a fantastic leading pair who both have experience in classic comedies of the 2010s such as The Heat and 21 Jump Street. The Lost City...
