Despite its somewhat unfocused screenplay, Captain Miller does end up being a boisterous action entertainer

It's one of those movies. The type of ones Dhanush has a tendency to take on. And you can't fault him for it... It has worked well for him in the past, and it continues to work well today, except maybe with a few hiccups here and there. Captain Miller is a little more on the blockbuster side of it, and it sees Dhanush playing the eponymous character; a guilt ridden soldier turned bandit/ revolutionary during the British occupation of India.

Themes of caste, patriotism, rights, exploitation and revolution are pretty heavy handed in this movie, and while that can allow the script to get a little carried away into comical territories at times, it still manages to keep things consistently loud, raw and pacy. It's not a ground-breaking exploration of these issues, but it's nonetheless entertaining. It's technically sound and visually impressive too. The actors all did their part in bringing this movie to life, and all of that contributes towards the success of this movie.

Also, shoutout to the random stranger seated behind me in the cinema hall, who was so invested in the film that he screamed "saavuda sakkiliyane" when Dhanush commits his first act of revenge against his British captain.

Incredible theater experience

My first theater watch of the year and it does use the big screen and sound impressively. But there are few movies that despite finding it to be very predictable, with so many moments that feel wasted, the emotions not hitting as they should and still come out satisfied with the end product like this. There are so many things going on in this movie, that it could have taken a lot of directions. Here, they chose to focus the most on the action and there are some great setpieces. Arun Matheshwaran knows how to make a frame look incredible and he does that brilliantly throughout the movie. There's so much that is told through framing and composition alone without actually saying anything. But unlike Rocky which followed an arthouse approach, this is a fully commercial approach without going overboard.

The problem with the movie is that there are so many characters and events happening that the emotions they are trying to convey are not fully realized on screen as they want to be. It felt like there might be a much longer cut that would properly justify and convey the emotions and if there is, that could be truly great.

Shiva Rajkumar was nice in his role. But his and Sundeep Kishan's roles really felt like they needed more screen time to give the full impact that was intended. Even Priyanka Mohan's character who had decent screen time lacked the proper writing for a lot of things to make sense.

In a way, it also felt like the familiarity of the way the story unfolds was also utilized to not explain a lot of things too much.

The dialogue about why the protagonist is joining the British army despite the freedom struggle happening was the high point in terms of writing in my opinion. That was used as a pivot point to start the journey. The action-packed nature of the movie also kind of lessened the impact of some of the more horrific stuff happening. But still, the action was terrific and even if the director falters when he tries to use the star elements of the actors, it doesn't go too much into the star worship level things that these types of films do.

GV Prakash Kumar's music is also a huge part of the movie as it really elevated a lot of the scenes and at times also made apparent why some aspects needed better writing.

It is unnecessary to say that Dhanush did a fantastic job but a lot of times the character became more than what is written because of his acting. He brought depth through performance that was not explored enough through writing and direction.

Ashraf Mallissery speaking Malayalam instead of Tamil when he's agitated is something I enjoyed in both this and Rocky. But the Malayalam audience in the theatre sure loved that dialogue.

Despite all of its problems, I enjoyed the movie a lot. The theatre experience was a blast and I really hope they have an extended cut for this.

Good raw, rustic but problematic period action adventure film

It is more like a 6.5. It's a good, raw, rustic period action adventure film. Ofcourse Dhanush's performance is great as usual and one of the main attractions of the film. Cinematography is nice. BGM is nice. Action is nice. Locations are nice. Technically the film stands strong. The portrayal of British is appropriately evil and surprisingly, the white actors do a great job. The performances are all solid. But the plot itself causes an emotional disconnect. Overall, it is a well made film. I don't mind the depiction of casteism in post-colonial India but I can't get behind this narrative of Indian "upper-caste" kings enslaving the tribals/"lower-caste" people and not allowing them to enter the temples built by them before British. Actually, before British, there were Mughals/Is.lamic invaders.

Easa basically compares the brutality of British colonialism to being enslaved by Hindu kings and questions who will actually get the independence from the British if they joined the independence movement. The word caste comes from Portuguese. British race scientist Herbert Hope Risley is notable for the formal application of the caste system to the entire Hindu population of British India in the 1901 census, of which he was in charge. As an exponent of scientific racism, he used anthropometric data to divide Indians into seven races. The villagers oppressed by "upper-caste" Indians win when they are able to enter the temple after Miller kills one nasty, sadist "upper-caste" Indian who couldn't bear the villagers stepping inside the temple. In the epilogue, we are led to believe that the "upper-caste" rulers along with the pie.ce of sh.it sycophant who managed to escape want to take revenge against Captain Miller for the king's death. I don't want to see more sadist brown sepoys, casteist rulers against tribals during peak colonial India. In movies like these, there should not be any Indian villains. The only villains should be the British like in RRR. At least this movie is much better than Shamshera. I loved Captain Miller kil.ling all the British men. Imagine a movie set during Na.zi Germany where some Je.ws are conspiring with the Na.zis and then we get a franchise about Je.ws vs Je.ws.

World Class Movie

Killer Killer Captain Miller,

A true Masterpiece.

The movie starts slowly and takes quickly a jet-speed continuation.

All the characters Arc are well made, the technicians and engineers have put massive hard work on this movie.

Songs are incredible moreover the background score is terrific, Gv the master.

All the actors especially Dhanush literally lived as the character. They acting are too noch.

The screen play and dialogues were amazing.

There are many twits in the movie and actions sequences are well made and looks lively.

Thank you Arun for this gem and I'm looking forward for the second part. 💥✨🏆

Surprisingly GOOD!

I had very low expectations on this film because of its dull and dark theme.

Captain Miller, both first half and second half were brilliant, it had a lot of interesting characters throughout the whole film. The plot was very engaging as well. If you like Karnan, you would definitely like Captain Miller.

Had low expectations of the songs and bgm as well but GV Prakash gave his best.

Everyone acted well in the film.

Overall a very engaging film with great cast and mass soundtrack, highly recommend if you're a Dhanush fan.

Captain Miller is a 2024 Indian Tamil-language epic action adventure film directed by Arun Matheswaran.

He did it again

Another good one from Dhanush. Excellent story line & sharp dialog that talks about social justice. About British treating better than upper caste to letting the lower caste get into temple to women Dhanush saying i am washing dishes and you fixing gun. Loved it. Dhanush from first frame to last. No women character is needed but the way female is shown can be done only by periyar/anna followers. Don't know who the director is other than he did saani kaaitham, i bet he is one.

No duet, no comedy.... really brave and he believed in script. The only negative is, such long action sequences.... is it really needed?

Dhanush shoots bullseye, others lose the target

Set on a backdrop of 40's Captain Miller tries to dig deep on the dillema of an ethnic community about whom to choose , the cruel and autocratic dynasty or british empire. Exploited by both « Captain Miller » the dacoit is born. Dhanush matches the intensity required as he uses his whole body to bring the anger , guilt . The screenplay and specially the action sequences are long and dull resulting the loose grip over the story.

One of my grievances with the south movies is they can't portray grey . The characters are straight evil or god . Very lazily written motives makes you question their intentions . Would have been a great watch had it not been so. Dhanush is the shining light of this average creation.

A Complete Action package

One of the best action movie ever made, just brought in mad max frames into it. A kinda of mixed with both real and imagination story. A movie well crafted and written. Arun has just nailed it, his writting is basically picturisation, which has worked in this movie perfectly. The guns and actions which is not overdosed and at an average phase. The hype mass element was suttle and accepting . My kinda action movie, it has a strong writting and an amazing screenplay. Arun matheshwaran style. Dhanush, oh man he always rocks with his performances, he is a man on a mission. An amazing performance. He brought the glipmses of veerappan. Songs were ok but bgm was rock hard from gv. All the others did their role to perfect. My fav one was shivaraj cameo which has worked so well. One of the best mass entertainer ever. Overall an amazingly crafted movie. Please do watch in theaters. Dhanushs best.

Carries the bold stamp of an action filmmaker! [+68%]

With every film of his, Arun Matheswaran comes across as a filmmaker who wants to stamp his name among the auteurs in the action genre. Captain Miller gives him the budget and a star in Dhanush to propel his period action-drama, with the writer-director learning from the criticism of his previous outings - the lack of a resonating emotional core. He course-corrects that to a large extent in this film, though there are stretches of drama where the proceedings are perfunctory, and their sole intention remain building to a major action block. The three act structure follows the realize-revolt-rampage pattern which our audiences are quite familiar with, and your satisfaction levels are bound to vary depending on how you take to it.

Dhanush excels in both the set-pieces & dramatic segments, and he's basically the one who holds the fort even when it shows signs of crumbling. His screen presence is used to scorching effect in those mass elevation moments, and he delivers the goods with aplomb. Aiding him are solid supporting acts from Priyanka Arul Mohan, Elango Kumaravel, and Nivedhithaa Sathish. The extended cameos from Shivanna and Sundeep are neatly incorporated, with the trio's action-packed crescendo arriving in the form of an Avengers Assemble! Kind of shot. GV Prakash Kumar has done fantastic work on the musical side of things, with both the songs and the score elevating the visuals.

Siddhartha Nuni is one of the most promising cinematographers of the times, and I've begun to take a liking for his fiery night shots. Whether the frames pan wide or focus on the protagonists' emoting faces, they're compelling - the only exception being the frantic, handheld shots. The cast mostly delivers, including the foreign actors, though I'm tired of seeing Alexx O'Nell in almost every period drama there is. We need to bring in more prominent names.. for instance, like how Karthik Subbaraj was able to add James Cosmo in Jagame Thandhiram. Dhanush is now fairly well-known internationally, isn't it?

🎬

The Plot and character development exhibit a meticulous attention to detail but the screenplay leaves room for improvement.

Dhanush delivers a stellar performance, seamlessly navigating through various phases of his character's journey.

Nivedhitha and Kaali Venkat impeccably portray their respective roles, adding depth to the film.

The British characters are skillfully brought to life by the cast, contributing effectively to the overall storyline.

Shiv Raj Kumar Sandeep Kishan and Aditi Balan, despite limited screen time, deliver outstanding performances.

However, Priyanka Mohan, though given a substantial role, falls short in terms of acting prowess. Her appearance is appealing, yet her efforts to portray the character are evident.

The musical score and editing contribute to the film's overall cohesion.

Cinematography shines in certain aspects such as camera angles and pivotal moments, but the lighting pattern and color grading may not resonate with every viewer.

The meticulous attention to sets, props, costumes, and makeup enhances the overall visual appeal.

Arun Matheshwaran's direction stands out, showcasing a keen eye for storytelling.

No Captain America, no Captain Jack Sparrow.... I will go with Captain Miller

The way they impressed me by trailer with lots of quick shot and badass music, the movie does the same. Dhanush performance is unmatchable and you can keep high expectation on him in acting department. Rest all supporting character was also great but problem lies because they don't have much screen play in movie. But whatever they got, they did it great and I got satisfied. Now comes the story and action and background score.

First half, most important scene are from starting 10-15 min because that will set your mind what movie is about. If you missed it then remaining movie is just an overrated action movie. Dhanush entry in fabulous and full badass action and dance and his anger expression and can't describe it normally. Then story goes back about what was happened with main character, what is story of different supporting character that have some weight in story and its required your times and some patients for it. It don't take much but yes one scene is there from which Dhanush character affects him, from there action pack starts. But I would say the way they represent to us make us speechless. Movie further first half mostly focus and on story but they still managed to give two big fight sequence which grab all your attention. Specially one which before the interval and dam they had planned so hard and executed in perfect set that theater audience was screaming like hell... Second half is mostly action with heavy score. One more backstory which also hold some weight in movie and three big action sequence. Hats off to director and team they planned it so well and executed in with no stinginess. Still you have full idea whatever is going on movie. But in last action, some team up action they wanted to present and personally I was like "WAIT! WHAT?" I didn't like that but other they did. Before ending movie, they set up small teaser about how next part is going to be. Personally I don't like much but still if they have some plan, I ready with some good expectation with it.

So the conclusion is Dhanush did not disappointed. I enjoyed and if I get chance again in theater, I will watched it again. This movie should give chance to watched in theater and reason are Dhanush and Badass Action.

Killer, Killer Captain Miller!

"Captain Miller" delivers an action-packed thrill ride with a unique blend of Indian flair and intense sequences reminiscent of "John Wick." Dhanush shines as the titular character, bringing depth and authenticity to the role. The film's emotional depth adds richness to the story, while the background score creates goosebumps-inducing moments throughout. Director Arun Matheswaran impresses with his ability to balance action and emotion, making every scene captivating. Despite its lengthy runtime, the movie's pacing may feel slow for some, especially in action-heavy sequences. However, the gripping plot and surprising twists keep viewers engaged until the very end. The female characters also shine with their brutal and action-packed performances, adding to the film's intensity. While the violence may not be for everyone, it adds to the overall impact of the story. With a tantalizing hint at a potential sequel or spin-off in the final moments, "Captain Miller" leaves audiences eager for more adventures in its thrilling world.

Fails to keep up the expectations...!!!

Set against the backdrop of India's fight for freedom Dhanush's transformation from a soldier in the British-Indian Army to a revolutionary is a powerful portrayal of personal conflict...His character journey is a mirror to the internal struggles faced by many when personal ambition clashes with societal or so called social obligations...

Thanks to Arun madheswaran for showing the true reality of the kings and their casteist beliefs...A visual masterpiece with brilliant cinematography. Stunts sequence are terrific. Film is loaded with actions with blood bath spread allover perhaps not recommendable for family audience but Arun excels as a craftsman with style over substance making...

Priyanka Mohan, Niveditha, John kokken, kaali Venkat, Elango & all the acting crews have done fantastic works. GV's music is the backbone of the movie. Bgm was a blast in theatre & songs are classics. Koranar song keeps u on loop mode... There is no emotional and goosebumps scenes in the movie except pre climax...While there nothing special in sivarajkumar character at climax its but looking at jailer movie its climax is far better for sivarajkumar...

Overall Visually striking and making gives you a grandeur similar to Hollywood flicks but lost its soul to the Nativity & it's emotional culture values due to pale screenplay.

A beautiful shattered glass.

Captain Miller by Arun Matheswaran explores the thems of violence only breeding violence, oppressed vs the oppresers fairly well. The cinemapography by Siddhartha Nuni is captivating and it combined with my favorite trait in a Arun Matheswaran movie: the usage of different aspect ratios for different chapters and the black and white portions(I personally am biased towards black and white in photos and films). The score is also very complimentary to the film but at the end what I felt was a lack of some emotional depth.

If I have to describe Captain Miller in a single sentence, it is like a shattered glass, you see the scattered pieces but it is beautiful none the less.

Epic Masterpiece

Captain Miller alias Koranar 🔥🔥🔥 One of the best Tamil Films I've ever watched. Arun Matheswaran is a gem of a director and one of the finest craftsman. Writing is top notch always a fan of his narrative in chapter wise segments. A visual masterpiece with brilliant cinematography. Stunts sequence are terrific. Film is loaded with actions.

Dhanush's another milestone. Brilliant performance with character changeovers and portrayed his role to the perfection. He is the sole of the Captain Miller. Shivanna & Sundeep also done brilliant cameos which creates wow moments throughout the film. Priyanka Mohan, Niveditha, John kokken, kaali Venkat, Elango & all the acting crews have done fantastic works. GV's music is the backbone of the movie. Bgm was a blast in theatre & songs are classics. Koranar song keep repeating in my minds.

Thanks to Arun for showing the true reality of the kings and their casteist beliefs unlike old novels like PS which shows them as Gods. The movie portrays that Kings are greedy and cunning. It also shows that the HERO is always a commoner who sacrifices for his people.

C's review on Captain Miller

Captain Miller's Review:

Verdict: Movies like these draw audiences to the theatre. Dhanush's acting, cinematography, background score, and storyline keep you engaged throughout the film. The set locations and action sequences are superb. However, the biggest flaw lies in the hand camera, which shakes a lot in a few scenes, making it disturbing to watch, causing discomfort to my eyes. Nevertheless, when a still camera is used, it elevates the entire experience, especially in IMAX. The star cast, role play, and depth of characters' performances are perfectly portrayed by the director. While editing, music, and choreography had their ups and downs, overall, the movie is worth watching this weekend.

Happy Movies C's Review.

Worst story.... Very very bad irritating movie

Very boring and noisy movie ....Dhanush walking with gun and only shooting and firing. BGM was so much and I got severe headache. Second half is full of action scenes. No much preference for female lead actors. And no much preference for Shivraj Kumar role. Cinematography is good. Climax scene they made all of us joker. I felt seeing once again Karna movie with guns and bombs. Dhanush acting is very good. But the direction field is very bad. At last they confused the audience with there complex screenplay not even telling why hero fighting against Britishers and King's. Music director put unnecessary bgm to undeserved scenes.

An average watch

After being intrigued by the promising trailer, I decided to watch this film in the theater.

The movie failed to pull me as an audience into its universe. I'm not able to connect with any of the characters in the film. The conversations between the characters were not so relatable. The scenes were flat and predictable. There is no amusement in what is going to happen in the next scene. No character stands out or creates a strong impression on us after leaving the theatre.

GV's background score works in a few scenes, particularly the killer killer song. Having a versatile actor like Dhanush in the film, the director could have used his potential to make the film look more dynamic and intense but he failed to do so.

A movie with this storyline, star cast and technical crew has the potential to come out as a great film but wasted cos of the not-so-interesting screenplay. For me, only the last 10 minutes of the film are somewhat engaging after Shivaraj Kumar's entry in the climax fight sequence.

Brilliant piece of storytelling

Arun's latest cinematic endeavor, "Captain Miller," stands out as a brilliant piece of storytelling that captivates the audience from start to finish. While some parts of the screenplay may unfold at a more measured pace, the overall drama artfully justifies every moment of its narrative.

One of the movie's standout features is the exceptional performances delivered by each member of the cast. Every character is brought to life with depth and authenticity, contributing to the movie's overall impact. Arun's storytelling prowess shines through as he weaves a compelling narrative with a cast that delivers stellar performances.

A noteworthy mention goes to music director GV Prakash, who emerges as another hero in this cinematic masterpiece. The background score, a crucial element in any film, is nothing short of terrific, enhancing the emotional resonance of each scene. Prakash's musical composition elevates the movie, leaving a lasting impression on the audience.

The cinematography deserves applause, with certain frames standing out as excellent visual moments that contribute to the film's overall aesthetic appeal. Arun's attention to detail, coupled with the cinematographer's skill, creates a visual treat for the audience.

In conclusion, "Captain Miller" is more than just a movie; it is a masterpiece that shouldn't be missed. Despite the occasional slowdown in the screenplay, the film's compelling drama, outstanding performances, and exceptional music make it a must-watch. Arun's storytelling prowess, coupled with the contributions of the entire team, has resulted in a cinematic gem that resonates long after the credits roll. Don't miss the opportunity to experience this captivating journey on the big screen.

Captain Miller, (I) Retired Hurt

On the very first day, Captain Miller happens, and my sole reason to watch is Mr. D. Despite being a relatively unknown director with just a couple of movies to his name, Arun Matheshwaran is fortunate enough to direct one of India's most seasoned actor. While the technical crew isn't familiar to me, they seem to have done their jobs well. The female lead, Priyanka Mohan, can now be proud of being part of Mr. D's movie, even with limited scenes alongside him. Shiv Rajkumar's presence could be a favor to Mr. D, but Arun fails to bring out the best in him. The stunts are well-performed but often excessive, with an abundance of gunshots and bombings. The worst part is Dhanush miraculously avoiding getting hit when faced with 700 odd soldiers. Several illogical scenes adds to the disappointment. Special mention to GV Prakash for an outstanding BGM, enhancing the cinematic experience. Aside from the impressive BGM, nothing else stands out, and none of the songs stays in mind. This movie relies solely on Dhanush, and it's far from his best. Watching it, even on OTT, is a challenge without fast forwarding, and there's an IMAX version in theatres 😂.

Tamil Cinema Finally Whipped up to suit a Global Pallette!!

Unapologetic, rooted in their local community themes, entertaining and Absolutely Kick-Ass!!!!

Captain Miller would remind you of Kill Bill, Original Mad Max, Clint Eastwood Westerns, and some amazing tamil movies in the last 20 years.

Finally a Tamil movie that got it right in putting it's pop culture genre in a cult classic version.

I think finally the world will truly understand why there is a cult following for Tamizh masala.

Narrative and Character development top class....... Pace neither too fast nor too slow......whether you want to watch it in a cinema or online streaming.

Now its best enjoyed with a good bourbon and some friends who enjoy a light hearted but bold story telling from a different point of view

No this is not a historical account of freedom struggle, on retrospect who knows and who cares. If you think on those lines you have missed the plot (figuratively and literally). The movie is too good, too raw and too meaty to digress from the core of its element.

I would liken Captain Miller to super spicy Chettinad Mutton Kulambu marinated to suit the western pallette. Super Spicy, true to its element yet toned down and approachable.

Good acting, Amazing Music, Amazing Script, Relatable characters, all whipped up in a universal language which made you enjoy Narcos with subtitles. Three cheers for the coming of age of a great new genre of Tamil cinema!!!!

Rustic, Emotional, Imperfect, Fiery, Unapologetic, yet ready to meet any steely stare before a western style or Narcos style shoot-out!!!!
