When Evil Lurks (Cuando Acecha la Maldad) is the new feature film from Argentinian director Demián Rugna. Rugna assured himself a place in horror history with his film Terrified in 2017 and then vanished off the scene until his segment in last year’s Satanic Hispanics. Thankfully he didn’t make us wait another five years for something new, and When Evil Lurks premiered this year at TIFF as part of its Midnight Madness program.

Appropriately enough the film starts somewhere around midnight when Pedro and his brother Jimmy are awakened by the sound of gunshots somewhere in the woods. Going to investigate the next morning they find a body, or half of one anyway, with a strange device nearby and a notebook in a language the brothers don’t recognize nearby.

Felix is in development and involves a hapless hypochondriac night tour guide who becomes mixed up in bizarre events involving Omin, a hard-partying vampire playboy.

When the latter falls from a yacht during a bender and is declared dead, doctors mistakenly harvest his organs. Omin rallies vampire bounty hunters from around the world to track down his missing parts.

When Evil Lurks Director Demián Rugna eyes a sequel along with a new vampire horror-comedy film.

Per Bloody Disgusting, Rugna has set his sights on developing two new films in the coming years. The first will be a sequel to the breakout horror hit When Evil Lurks, while the second, Felix: A Complex Puzzle, will be a vampire horror-comedy revolving around Omin, a vampire who loses several key pieces of himself, and Felix, a hypochondriac who is unwittingly drawn into the film's sprawling story.

Ring in the new year with Shudder, AMC Networks’ premium streaming service for horror, thrillers and the supernatural, to celebrate the new season of Shudder Original series Horror’s Greatest, debuting on Tuesday, December 31.

Today, the streaming service released the trailer and key art for Season 2, which features interviews with David Dastmalchian (Late Night with the Devil), Kate Siegel, Joe Hill, Tom Holland, Jenn Wexler, Ted Geoghegan (Brooklyn 45), and Dewayne Perkins (The Blackening).

"Epic Pictures’ specialty horror label Dread presents Ghost Game, following a couple’s internet challenge that turns fatal as they trespass into a haunted house, facing sinister evils lurking within its walls. Ghost Game will have a limited theatrical run beginning October 18, and on October 22 the film will be available to rent or purchase on video-on-demand (VOD). The film will be available on Blu-ray beginning December 10.

Ghost Game is the second directorial feature from Jill Gevargizian, best known for her feature debut The Stylist, which developed from an award-winning short film of the same title and debuted in 2020 from Arrow Video.

The Fangoria Chainsaw Awards are back this year and bigger than ever.

Once again airing on AMC’s Shudder, the 2024 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards has shifted the annual awards show’s shift to October; as such, the window of this year’s eligible horrors is an expanded one, encompassing all of 2023 and the first half of 2024. That means a much bigger selection of horror titles to pull from, and with the expanded categories this year, that means a massive list of 46 nominees. They even have a new category this year: Best Video Game.

The only award season that matters is here! Joking (kind of), but seriously, Fangoria just released the complete list of nominees for the 2024 Fangoria Chainsaw Awards. Considering how often horror gets shut out of the mainstream award shows, it's nice to have at least one thing we can rely on year after year.

Last year's Chainsaw Awards included big wins for movies like The Black Phone, Terrifier 2, and Prey. This time, the categories are again stacked, with films like Abigail, Evil Dead Rise, The First Omen, Talk To Me, Late Night with the Devil, and many more going head to head.

Specific performances are also being highlighted, like Tobin Bell in Saw X and Kathryn Newton for both Lisa Frankenstein and Abigail. It's been a fantastic few years for horror, and it'll be exciting to see which movies pull ahead this time around.

Fangoria has announced the full list of nominees for 2024's Fangoria Chainsaw Awards. Voting is now officially open with the nominees revealed, and horror fans are encouraged to select their favorites for each category, ranging from TV and movies to the best genre video game.

Like previously, this year's Fangoria Chainsaw Awards will be streaming on Shudder. The nominees come at a time when the horror genre is back on the rise, and there's a mix of contenders from psychological thrillers to more supernatural stories. Also announced is that this year will see the award show's airing shifted to October, but this will make the window for eligibility extended --- now acknowledging releases from all of 2023 along with the first half of 2024.

There's no shortage of incredible horror movies on Shudder since 2020, including the likes of Late Night With the Devil and Skinamarink.

Let’s take a ride in the way-back machine and step out in 1999, when a little independent film called The Blair Witch Project became an iconic film. We won’t argue about whether or not it was the first found footage film, instead stating the indisputable fact that it was the most successful one (not to mention one of the most profitable independent films) of all time.

At the heart of The Blair Witch Project were three unknown actors: Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard and Michael Williams. It was each of their first films, and none of them expected it to become a massive hit.

The production was unique in that the actors were encouraged to improvise most of their dialogue. There was a screenplay, but it mostly contained the events that were to take place, and there were times when only one of the actors knew what was going to happen next.

Rugna drops the audience in the middle of that world without explanation, and his matter-of-fact approach to the subject amplifies the horror. Gruesome acts of violence often arise without warning for both the characters and the audience. Rugna keeps viewers on edge from the moment When Evil Lurks begins until the final shot.

The average person knows Tom DeLonge for his time in Blink-182 and Angels & Airwaves; however, he also holds an interest in other areas such as clothing, art, and the paranormal. Now, DeLonge can add co-writer and director to his list of accolades with the release of his feature film directorial debut, Monsters of California, which finds a way to combine the sophomoric sense of humor of Blink182 and his obsession with the supernatural. The Blair Witch Project co-creator Eduardo Sánchez had a hand in two horror films that are getting theatrical releases this month. Between "Talk To Me" and "Evil Dead Rise," you'd think the superlative for 2023's best horror movie trailer would've already been won by now, but there's a late contender this week in the form of the horrifying new promo for "When Evil Lurks." It's no surprise this movie looks scary as hell, as it comes from Demián Rugna, the filmmaker behind 2017's downright freaky Buenos Aires-set horror flick "Terrified." Not to be confused with killer clown movie "Terrifier," "Terrified" is a disturbing movie about a suburban investigation of a demonic presence that goes frighteningly, unforgettably wrong.

The full trailer for IFC Films and Shudder's When Evil Lurks has now been unleashed, and reveals a lengthy look at this disturbing, original, and wildly unpredictable horror film from Terrified writer and director Demián Rugna. Horror anthology movies are not anything new. For decades, we have seen the horror genre pump out numerous anthology movies that tell many different short stories that are not always wholly connected to the films main plot. Films like Trick' R' Treat, The ABC's of Death, and VHS are just a few of the many examples of great horror anthologies. It's an underrated genre, with few masterpieces but lots of pretty great films. Keeping that tradition alive is the 2023 horror anthology, Satanic Hispanics.

Satanic Hispanics comes from a team of Latinos both in front of and behind the camera to tell a culturally specific horror story influenced by some terrifying folklore. To that end, Satanic Hispanics is a celebration of Latino heritage, as the many talented people that worked on the film get to show off their skills in the horror genre.

The best horror anthologies are more than just haphazard collections of short films mashed together to reach feature length. Movies with a unifying theme or filmmaking style are more successful at holding the audience's interest, and the Latino-driven anthology Satanic Hispanics makes its unique focus clear. There are still some slightly jarring tonal shifts between the individual segments, which range from heavy and intense to lighthearted and silly, and the framing story doesn't hold them together as well as it should, but, as an entertaining showcase for a group of underappreciated Latino horror filmmakers, Satanic Hispanics accomplishes its goal.

Most of the filmmakers involved with Satanic Hispanics are veterans of other horror anthologies, including Tales of Halloween and the V/H/S and ABCs of Death movies, and they clearly understand how to deliver a compact horror tale that fits within a larger framework. The film features an all-Latino cast of directors, including Mike Mendez, Alejandro Brugués, and Gigi Saul Guerrero, who aim to reclaim the narrative and showcase Latino talent in the horror genre. Horror anthology Satanic Hispanics assembles five Latin American horror filmmakers to celebrate Hispanic talent in front of and behind the camera, curating tales that spotlight Hispanic myths and legends. Uniting four tales of terror is Satanic Hispanics‘ wraparound from producer/director Mike Mendez.

In Mendez’s wraparound, a police raid uncovers a grisly crime scene full of dead bodies. They take the sole survivor, a man that refers to himself as “The Traveler” (Efren Ramirez), into custody for answers. The Traveler attempts to explain the bizarre events that led up to his capture to skeptical detectives Gibbons (Sonya Eddy) and Arden (Greg Grunberg). He entertains them with four tales of supernatural encounters, hoping to persuade them to let him go.

Five Latino filmmakers have come together for the horror anthology Satanic Hispanics, releasing in theaters on Friday, September 14, 2023. Ahead of the release, Bloody Disgusting has been provided an exclusive clip introducing the anthology’s enigmatic storyteller.

In the film, “When police raid a house in El Paso, they find it full of dead Latinos, and only one survivor. He’s known as The Traveler, and when they take him to the station for questioning he tells them those lands are full of magic and talks about the horrors he’s encountered in his long time on this earth, about portals to other worlds, mythical creatures, demons and the undead. When we reviewed Trauma Therapy: Psychosis it was mentioned the fillm was a reworked version of The Vance Institute. A was originally shot with the intent of being released in black and white with a few colour scenes. Instead, it was released all in colour.

There was also new footage added featuring Tom Sizemore as the host of The Tom Sizemore Show interviewing Victor, one of the characters from the 2019 film Trauma Therapy. After Sizemore died this made a centrepiece of the film’s publicity as his last film despite there being several more of his films yet to be released.

This was shot and edited in without the participation of the original director, Lawrie Brewster who says he was assured he would have the final cut.

Back in 1999, directors Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez brought the world The Blair Witch Project (watch it Here), a low budget film that was a massive box office hit, leading to a poorly received sequel that was released the following year and a sequel that most movie-goers ignored when it was released in 2016. Sánchez is currently doing the press rounds for the horror anthology Satanic Hispanics, which he contributed to and is set to reach theatres on September 14th. While doing his part to build the hype for that movie, Sánchez sat down for an interview with the Cult FM podcast, and during that conversation he not only talked about the unmade Blair Witch prequels that he and Myrick had in mind, but also said that – as far as he knows – there are no new Blair Witch projects in the works at Lionsgate.
