Rupert Wyatt
The Gambler review: Mark Wahlberg isn't playing with full set of cards
Rupert Wyatt
Director: Rupert Wyatt; Screenwriter: William Monahan; Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Jessica Lange, John Goodman, Brie Larson, Michael K Williams, Alvin Ing, Anthony Kelley; Running time: 111 mins; Certificate: 15

Crime pays but blackjack most certainly doesn't in The Gambler, a so-so existential thriller based on the cult '70s film starring James Caan. Mark Wahlberg doesn't look too comfortable in those hand-me-down shoes, or with the tousled hair that is supposed to imply hours spent scratching his head over thoughts of his own mortality and the complete works of William Shakespeare.

He is no-one's idea of a literature professor and yet, that's the day job of James Bennett, whose nights are spent in high-stakes gambling dens run by Korean gangsters. The joy of winning is always short-lived because his next move is an all-or-nothing bet that leaves him with, guess what - nothing, except the threat of imminent death. It's this compulsion that...

Exclusive: Bruce Willis Can't Let It Go In Clip From Thriller 'The Prince'
While Bruce Willis is not returning "The Expendables 3," the retro shoot-'em-up fest opening this weekend, the action veteran has two movies on the way, "Frank Miller's Sin City: A Dame To Kill For" and "The Prince," and while you've seen plenty promotion from the former by now, here's a taste of the latter. Directed by Brian A. Miller ("Officer Down," "The Outsider"), and featuring John Cusack, Jason Patric, 50 Cent and Rain, the story follows a retired assassin who must face a former rival when his daughter is kidnapped. As this exclusive clip indicates, Willis' character aims to bring his enemy down. "The Prince" opens in theatres and VOD on August 22nd. Watch below.

Check Out These Five Exclusive New Images From The Prince
In the action genre, there are few stars whose mere presence packs as powerful a punch as Bruce Willis. And while of course none of us here at We Got This Covered could ever claim to have grown tired of seeing the icon kick ass, this summer’s The Prince is definitely more interesting than most action fare the actor has been involved with lately – because it casts him not as the put-upon hero, but as a cold-hearted, dastardly assassin.

Today, We Got This Covered is thrilled to exclusively five new images from the actioner, highlighting Willis along with stars Jason Patric and John Cusack. You can check them out below.

In The Prince, Patric plays a retired assassin who gets drawn back into his old life when his teenage daughter (Gia Mantegna) is kidnapped. After recruiting an old ally (Cusack) and heading into enemy territory, he realizes that confronting...

Bruce Willis Doesn't Forgive Jason Patric in New 'The Prince' Trailer
"I'm not gonna forgive you. Only God forgives." Just in case the first trailer for the action thriller called The Prince didn't convince you that this was not going to be a good movie, a second trailer has arrived, showing a little more of the story. Jason Patric plays a former assassin and father who finds his daughter in danger when a rival assassin (Bruce Willis) kidnaps her in order to get back at him for some wrong done in the past. The only interesting aspect of the film is Willis as the bad guy, but he really seems to be phoning this one in. And again, we're not very sure what John Cusack is doing here, but whatever. Watch? Here's the new trailer for Brian A. Miller's The Prince from Collider: The Prince is directed by Brian A. Miller (The Outsider, Officer Down and Caught in the Crossfire) written...

Bruce Willis is a Bad Guy in Action Thriller 'The Prince' First Trailer
The last time Bruce Willis teamed up with Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson for a movie, it was the abysmal action thriller Set Up, and now it appears neither of them have learned their lesson, because they can be seen back together in The Prince. However, Bruce Willis isn't the good guy, and 50 Cent isn't one of the leads. Instead, it's Jason Patric who takes the role of a father who finds his daughter in danger when a rival assassin (Willis) kidnaps her in order to get back at him for some wrong done in the past. John Cusack is here for some reason too, and this just looks like it's destined for the bargain bin all over again. Here's the first trailer for Brian A. Miller's The Prince, originally from Yahoo: The Prince is directed by Brian A. Miller (The Outsider, Officer Down and Caught in the Crossfire) written by Jeremy Passmore...

Interview: The Outsider Star Craig Fairbrass
In case you haven’t heard the news, Craig Fairbrass is a cinematic badass. When it comes to delivering tough-as-nails action, nobody does it quite like Fairbrass. “The Outsider,” which co-stars Jason Patric and James Caan, recently arrived on home video in the United States. However, that’s not the only motion picture the guy has available at the moment. A quick search on IMDb turns up a number of recent and upcoming projects, which makes he decision to talk to us a little surprising. Although he plays a tough guy on-screen, Fairbrass is actually very kind and incredibly personable. If you’re at all curious about “The Outsider” or his work as an action star, then take a moment to peruse our interview. Tell me a little bit about your new film ‘The Outsider’? How did the project come about? I worked with Brian J Miller on “House of the Rising Sun.

Review: Amateur Action Thriller 'The Outsider' Starring Craig Fairbrass, James Caan And Jason Patric
If you stick around in Hollywood long enough, keep in shape, log a solid amount of credits and act the part of a good soldier, maybe you, too, will receive your own starring vehicle. Of course, there’s no guarantee that vehicle will be in any way interesting, but consider it the show-business version of a gold watch, the example of a career spent punching the clock. For Craig Fairbrass, that moment comes with “The Outsider,” his very own leading part in an action picture alongside a pretty girl and decorated co-stars. Fairbrass, a lifer who has played heroes and henchmen alike, looks just as surprised as you. Fairbrass plays Lex Walker, a black ops veteran stationed in the Middle East who learns of his daughter’s passing back in Los Angeles. When his commanding officer informs him he can’t go stateside to identify the body, Walker barks a stern “Fuck you and yours!

The Outsider – The Review
Action movies typically fall within a finite number of formulas. For this reason, the success of an action movie generally relies a great deal on how well the filmmaker adapts to creating an original story within that formula. Acting is rarely a significant factor in an action film because, well, most viewers are not expecting an action film to win any major awards of a thespian nature.

To put it simply, action films rely greatly on the filmmaker accomplishing two very specific criteria. The first are riveting, exciting action sequences that are masterfully choreographed and meet the bare minimal qualifications for us to willingly suspend our disbelief. The second would be a storyline that is engaging and as unpredictable as possible. This second criteria is so very often the most difficult to achieve and this film just sort of glides along, content to earn that low-to-mid C grade, not ambitious...

Review: The Outsider, Just Outside Of Being A Great Action Film
Without a doubt, Craig Fairbass is a physical presence in any film he is in. As much as The Outsider tries, though, his emotional output as a concerned father is outmatched by his stature and physical strength. Fairbass plays a British military contractor named Lex Walker who is told his daughter has died. When he arrives in Los Angeles and discovers the body is not hers, he begins an investigation, starting at her former employer Most Industries, run by unscrupulous Carl Schuuster (James Caan). At the same time, Detective Klein of the Lapd is trying to solve the murder of another girl and keep Walker from dishing out his own definition of justice. In a supporting role, Jason Patric as Detective Klein does little except expound with...

Jason Patric, James Caan, and Craig Fairbrass in The Outsider (2014)
The Outsider Is Full of Shopworn Action Flick Sequences
Jason Patric, James Caan, and Craig Fairbrass in The Outsider (2014)
The Outsider takes place in a world of endless lens flares, a J.J. Abrams–inspired visual tic as derivative as the rest of this vigilante B-movie in which no-nonsense British military contractor Lex Walker (Craig Fairbrass) returns to L.A. upon hearing of the overdose death of his daughter, Sam (Melissa Ordway).

When he gets to the city, he discovers that she's not really dead, thus initiating a search-and-rescue mission defined by lots of stale skirmishes and shoot-outs with anonymous thugs, as well as numerous shots of Lex scowling at everything from investigating detective Klein (Jason Patric) and crooked corporate bigwig Schuuster (James Caan) to Sunset Boulevard's rows of palms trees.

Fairbrass proves a hulking wannabe ass-kicker without much distinct...

Craig Fairbrass Takes on Los Angeles in The Outsider Trailer
Someone is messing with Craig Fairbrass’ daughter and they’re going to regret it in “Officer Down” director Brian A. Miller’s “The Outsider”, which co-stars James Caan as the evil CEO of an evil company or some such. You know how it is with these evil companies, always trying to make money and killing people and such. Seriously, guys, stop being so easy! Anyways. The film co-stars Jason Patric as a cop and Shannon Elizabeth shows up here somewhere, though I’m not entirely sure because she’s only in the trailer for a few seconds, and I’m not entirely clear what her role in the shenanigans is. She still looks fantastic, though. Nadia Ftw all day long, baby. In the vein of Taken, this action film is about a British military contractor who is told his daughter has died. When he arrives in Los Angeles and discovers the body is not hers,...

The Prince Recruits Jason Patric, John Cusack & 50 Cent
Following the news that Bruce Willis – he who was ‘bored’ with action movies – would be taking on low-budget thriller The Prince, the cast list has now expanded with the addition of Jason Patric and John Cusack in key roles.

Patric will play Paul, a retired mob enforcer who is forced to return to Las Vegas when his daughter goes missing. There, he must confront old enemies, including Omar – played by Willis – who has waited years for the opportunity to settle a score. Details of Cusack’s role have yet to be confirmed, but we understand that Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson (Escape Plan), Johnathon Schaech (Ray Donovan), Gia Mantegna (The Frozen Ground), and actor/singer Rain (Speed Racer) will round off The Prince‘s ensemble cast.

The early presence of Bruce Willis on this cast list undoubtedly makes The Prince an interesting prospect. Last time Willis made a conscious decision to break from his action movie mould,...
