Show says what it wants to say in first episode, but still grows on you...

I was "with it" for a brief period, and even to me, I feel out of place laughing at some of the show's jokes about situations I have not personally been in. The show centers around an Assistant Director, which unfortunately gives its viewers a bit of imposter syndrome as pretty much none of us have actually been Directors or Producers on multi-hundred dollar superhero production.

That said, the more I watch the show, the more I have grown to like it. Episode 3 may be the best yet for nailing the subject matter, albeit there is nothing particularly new about its social commentary on misogyny in MCU, nor is the satire in the least bit subdued. It is what it is: Lighthearted laughter through parody. I will continue to watch the show, as it's easy viewing and at least good for several laughs. My recommendation is watch at least a few episodes before deciding if it's for you.

Pretty good, and occasionally very funny, but mostly meh

This is pretty fun as a premiss. The acting very solid, and I had a lot of fun with some parts and some episodes. This is lighthearted satire and as such it sometimes hits the mark, but enough of the time it does not.

I would say that except for the premiss and the acting about half of each episode is good fun entertainment. The problem is of course that the other half is either not funny, does not hit the mark or is just unrecognisable for anyone outside. We cannot all have been part of a production crew or know how movies are made.

Despite my reservation this is not bad. I had fun watching this show and there is enough laughter to at least be partly entertained.

I give this a 6/10. I think that is resonable. But I am uncertain if I should recommend this show, I do not think this is for everyone.

Pretty good

Awesome studio type show with awesome techno music and goofy actors within actors not to bad fun entertainment! Surprised the low rating on IMDb at least plenty appreciate The Franchise. I love the cast so much especially Himesh Patel, Billy M, and most everyone else is lovely; I wish I could hangout in a cinema studio it seems so great. The humor is great, the writing is pretty smooth, fairly intriguing and magnificent entertainment value truly deserves better ratings! Delightful series for the most part but hbo is lacking on better shows except The Penguin that is a pure masterpiece - I would understand hate this show is a little chaotic/cheesy.

If you'd worked on a film set you might laugh at this.

Not sure exactly who this show is for exactly. I've watched a few movies about making movies and they were also comedies. Movies like One Cut of the Dead, Living in Oblivion those are very funny movies while simultaneously makes me wonder why I ever want to work in the industry (though I have no plans on stopping). This show does have its funny moments, again if you've worked on a set you'll definitely relate to this. My favorite moments are the "actors" Richard E Grant plays a prestigious theatre actor who hates his co star played by Billy Magnussen. They were the standout of this episode

Not sure if this show is going to have much to say about the industry other than producers getting in the way of directors but I am interested in where it's gonna go.

There is potential with this series.

The Franchise (2024-) was a series that I admittedly had no interest in watching, but I just randomly watched the first episode and I continued on from that point. Now that the first season is over, I have my thoughts on this series and its future.

Positives for The Franchise (2024-): I liked the satirical approach that this series takes with its premise where you have this group of filmmakers and actors who are trying to make a superhero movie and turn it into a franchise. The actors do a good job at playing the types of characters that the show needs them to be. I really liked the shots that this series takes at Hollywood and their obsession with creating cinematic universes. And for my final positives, this series has the potential to be great if it gets renewed for a second season.

Negatives for The Franchise (2024-): This is only one season of the series, so a lot can change by the time there's a announcement on its future, but there are things that bothered me. First off, there is a lot of comedy that didn't work for me. There wasn't an episode of this series that I loved, but I didn't hated any of them. And finally, I'm just a little burnt out on movie studios and their obsession with cinematic universes.

Overall, The Franchise (2024) is off to a good, but rocky start for me. However, there is potential with this series and I would like to see that.

Ignore the reviews, please.

I am writing this for the hope some of you come across it and balance out the "haters" who don't understand what it's like to work in the entertainment industry.

The negative reviews are asking the questions: " Who are these people?" Answer: these are the people who spend stupid hours (hours away from their real life and family) making the movies that you watch and share life experiences over.

Why do they look like they are all on drugs? Answer: they look "run down" and "weathered" because they are. They are strung out because most days you need to be in the middle of Jersey or Indiana at 3am and problem solve a constant flow of emotions. The 1st AD is the hardest job. You manage everyone and every aspect of the cinema. Then one day you wake up and you look 10 years older than you are.

The show is fast, well-acted and hilarious. The way the show interweaves between character tracks and back into ensemble makes it easy to watch.

Just watch it and don't "listen to anybody" anymore. Find your own opinion and vision on life.

Solid Seven Stars

Let me be clear. This was a good television show, but not great. It was funny and I had some laughs, but a lot of the humor did not exactly land for me even though I liked the effort. Great silly characters and I am a big movie buff so i appreciated the narrative around the franchise movie industry which has become toxic. Much like I assume most of Hollywood has at this point. The people giving this 1/10 must be extremely uneducated or ignorant around the entertainment industry because they obviously did not appreciate or understand the jokes. They are only 30 min episodes so it was a quick easy watch through the first season.

Razor sharp dialogue and excellent performances

Feeling motivated to review (I rarely do) because this show deserves WAY BETTER than its ~6 average rating.

It's like W1A in that the dialogue is so clever it is dripping with hilarious references that would keep you laughing through the 2nd and 3rd rewatches.

The folks giving this a bad review are not appraising this for what it is - a short sharp skewer of overcommercialised showbiz, delivered in digestible helpings. It is not a procedural sitcom, but doesn't hold itself out to be. Instead it has much more heart and approaches some more significant themes.

I think the writing of the characters is fantastic and it's the best I've seen Himesh Patel. Richard E Grant is excellent as ever, and delivers a hugely self effacing performance.

Watchable

If you enjoyed the BBC series Twenty Twelve and W1A, you'll enjoy this, essentially the same format, but set in the world of superhero franchise movies.

The cast is spectacular, top class from start to finish.

The entire series pokes fun at Hollywood egos and the ridiculousness of superhero franchises that churn out movie after movie with limited creativity,

It does feel sometimes that some of the jokes are a little too "insider" but not so much that it spoils the experience.

It's a shame this series didn't get more promotion in the UK as it is well worth a watch. You don't have to think TOO hard, it's an enjoyable romp with very British humour.

Huge misfire

I've watched the first 3.

I love loads of Armando Iannucci stuff - In The Thick Of It, Veep and Partridge etc.

Also very much an MCU fan and fairly plugged in to the stuff they're lampooning.

I am flabbergasted at the warm reception this broad, basic, cringey, aggressively non-funny gruel had received in some quarters.

I have smiled wryly a couple of times, but spent more time eye rolling at the first-base, crappy, lazy set up. If you're going to lampoon this genre it needs to be a lot sharper than "fish people" and "moss men". Honestly it's like something you'd see set up on a Saturday evening variety show from the 1980s with Les Dennis or Russ Abbott.

It's crammed full of good people but l've laughed more listening to rail delay announcements than I did in the first two and a half episodes of this.

The guy in the mo-cap suit is the only thing that's been especially funny or even on point.

It feels very much like smug, well off, middle aged media types punching down on popular culture and not in an especially insightful, intelligent or engaging way.

Hit the ground running - more Veep than Avenue 5

Although you do have to be a little bit familiar with the jargon - which will reduce potential viewers - it's on mark and it hits the ground running. The acting is pretty strong right off the bat. I already care about the lead and his struggle.

I don't understand people complaining of not laughing enough. This is not stand up comedy, it's a satirical drama.

Like everything Iannucci touches, it's cringe funny. Not lol funny. The sadness of it all is always lurking in the background. This is what made Veep work on so many levels, those ridiculous characters have some real depth. And I think it's the case here. As it wasn't in Avenue 5 for example (even if I enjoyed it). There's real potential to get deep into pointing out the industry's flaws while showing the human point of view in a rather light vehicule. To me the angle is just right and it reminds me of the political comment in Veep.

I wish more people were appreciative of this kind of craft, as I feel this will get cancelled right out of the gate. Not a lot of series with this kind of beat and style. A Aaron Sorkin meet Mel Brooks kind of thing.

It's on its way to offend super hero fans, and I hope they will realize it's because they're right on point ;)

"What if this isn't a dream factory? What if it's an abattoir?"

Not quite all there and about ten years out of date, but I'm a sucker for the workplace "building anxiety" comedies ever since the heady days of the Thick of It. The ensemble cast are tremendously good and it's great to see folk like Made for Love's Billy Magnussen butt heads with evergreen britfolk like Justin Edwards. It bristles with great one-liners and features some really strong and angry takes but perhaps is a bit too industry-focussed for some. Whether hanging the whole thing on Himesh Patel's jaded and disaffected Daniel wasn't the right angle and the strong end-credits interviews made me wonder how this would have fared in more of a classical mockumentary style. Much like Avenue 5 it's sadly landed as more of an Armando curio than a vital project in the satire canon.

So great! How has this flown so under the radar?!!

Discovered this gem while googling the Avenue 5 cancelation - I am now baffled I had not heard of it, as it is a perfect intersection of my taste/interests. Perhaps it is TOO effective in skewering the superhero genre and thus has not promoted properly?! Mystified. Surely destined for cult status and eventual revival. So CUTTING, funny and painfully incisive about where we are at as a culture. The writing is razor sharp. The characters are recognisable to anyone who's ever stepped foot on a set and so skilfully drawn. The cast are superb- every performance is perfection. Richard E Grant steals every scene he's in- Daniel Bruhl and Himesh Patel are note perfect and (omg) Darren Goldstein is sooo effectively odious. Not to mention the buoyant Lolly Adefope (another character I am certain I have met irl), the utterly convincing Aya Cash and the hilarious Jessica Hynes. Honestly want to list the entire cast by name. Such a treat. Thanks Jon Brown!! You are a talent!!

a day late

It's a satirical take on a superhero franchise. Daniel Kumar (Himesh Patel) is the 1st Assistant Director of a second tier superhero movie. His job is to fix everything and appease everyone. It's a chaotic cast of characters and that's before the arrival of new producer Anita (Aya Cash). She's his ex who dumped him for an A-list actor.

The pilot is a bit rough. It needs to explain the situation more. Aya Cash has limited time. She really needs to be there sooner. She and Himesh should be the leads right from the start. The second episode is able to fill out a lot of the empty spaces and the various characters. This is fun and takes some deep digs at the superhero complex. The problem is that it is about a decade too late. The genre is already dying out or migrating to TV. Quite frankly, the theater itself is dying. This satires something that happened from another era.

Ignore the 1/10 ratings, enjoy a good British comedy

For some reason silly people have been review-bombing this series with lots of 1/10 ratings and reviews. Ignore these and just give it a watch.

Fans of British comedy and Armando Iannucci will find a lot to like in this. A great series in the tradition of Extras and Veep/Thick of It, commenting on behind the scenes making of movies and television. But similar situations can easily be applied to any other hard-working industry where people go into for their passion, but have to navigate the labytinth of internal politics, brutal business side and overworking to keep trying to achieve their dream careers.

So anyone can find something for themselves in this series, the only consideration is if the type of humor will suit you. And the best way is to find out is to give an actual watch.

Great

This show is great! I've been waiting for something to watch that's new but good. I like the office, parks and rec, 30 rock, and those kind of shows. This is my kind of comedy. Me and my wife did laugh out loud, which not many shows make me laugh. I was surprised it only has a 6 out of 10, it definitely has a lot of potential going forward. Movies have become entirely series, universe, and franchise based so this is obviously being made in the perfect time and atmosphere for the premise. I recommend it, but as a heads up, it does feel a little fast paced until you understand the characters, like a lot of shows.

Not the usual clever British wit

This series explores an overdone theme of what goes on behind the scenes in the making of a movie. There are the usual clashes of egos, failed stunts etc. The dialog here however, aside from being inaudible, is rather lame. Satirical British humor is not at a high standard here like it was in the British version of The Office. The actors all attempt to constantly speak over one another and seldom finish sentences. The casting is not great. It's barely watchable but does help fill a streaming queue when there's nothing else to watch. Overall, it's a series that one can visit intermittently as it runs out of steam very rapidly.

Deserves waaay more love!

I can't believe anyone would give this show anything below a 7 rating! You don't need to have worked in the entertainment industry to enjoy this as some reviews claim. I think half of these reviews are by people who didn't finish the first episode, perhaps they were expecting a different type of show and were disappointed because the jokes went over their head? It moves fast, the quips come so quickly I sometimes have to rewind it just to catch all the hilariousness. This is for the people who enjoy comedies along the lines of Veep or You're the Worst or Avenue 5 (but better). I really hope this show continues because TV needs more smart comedies like this!

A Sci-Fi Movie in Chaos That Fails to Deliver Laughs

"Franchise" Review:

"Franchise" centers around the chaotic production of a sci-fi movie that's way off schedule. The actors can't connect with the eccentric director or make sense of the confusing script, and they're constantly at odds with each other. The show's core premise revolves around the disorder, with a cast of quirky, larger-than-life characters.

At the heart of the chaos is the second assistant director (AD), who tries desperately to hold everything together. He's constantly stretched thin, dealing with a director lost in his own world, self-absorbed actors with questionable talent, underqualified and underpaid assistants, and a studio that's stifling the filmmakers' creative vision. To top it off, his personal life is crumbling too.

While each of these elements is intended to be comedic, they never really come together. The jokes fall flat, and instead of feeling entertained, you end up feeling sorry for the main character. The show fails to evoke any real emotion other than frustration, leaving you with a sense that your time has been wasted.

RIP Batgirl

It feels like much of this was written in Batgirl's memory, with plenty of quippy mockumentary fun for viewers who couldn't care less about the actual MCU, DCU, DCEU etc etc franchises. The entire cast has perfected dry comedic timing, and anyone who enjoys wry humor at a measured pace will find plenty to love. Lolly Adefope is given free rein to steal all the scenes as she normally does, and the writers make great use of the surprise of Billy Magnussen and Daniel Bruhl in comedic roles.

There can be no more light.

It also looks like "the militant wing of the base" watched to that exact line, figured out the premise, and tantrumed all over the reviews.

Spoiler: it only gets better from there. Maximum Potency!

An unfortunate let down

This was a really disappointing watch. I am a huge Daniel Brühl fan, and have been waiting for months for this to come out. I think most the funny parts of the show are unfortunately in the trailer, but it doesn't have much else to offer.

Although, you really do feel the same anxiety that film crew must go through on a daily basis. I feel that it is a wasted show, that could have been much better with the immense cast and director. I hope the episodes somehow gets better as the series go on, because it's quite difficult to get through each of the 20 minute episodes.

I rarely write reviews, as much as I rarely give anything below 5, but this was such a shame.

Review bombed

When I first saw the rating for the show, it was sitting at a 1.0. Hopefully that has changed by then but it definitely had me curious. When they first announced this, I was sold. It'd been a couple of years now, but Sam Mendes? HBO? The plot was intriguing enough to warrant a check-out. I only feel implored as to not let this sink by the wayside. Only one episode in but it's a very solid pilot. If you have any mild interest in the film industry or any basic understanding of the toxic culture I'm sure they'll be something for you to enjoy. I could only see the negative reviews as a way of self-defensive mechanism but they show the Warner Brothers logo itself so clearly they're comfortable making fun of themselves. I could also see the complaint of everybody just being horrible people but again it's so early to tell and I think there's enough serviceable characters to make way for something more personal.

Unbearable

10 minutes into the show and you already want everybody to stop speaking, turn off the lights and get out of the set.

Who are these people supposed to be? They all look like on drugs or on the edge of a nervous breakdown: they don't talk, they scream ; they don't walk normally, they wriggle nervously their way through the set; they don't make jokes, they seem to be speaking to themselves and it's supposed to be... funny. (??) I refuse to know where this show is headed, the characters are unbelievably insufferable. As for the plot in itself, it goes so fast that you merely know what's going on with the story. Confusing and messy.
