Covers the pioneering and determination progression of skating into the bedrock foundation of what we know today. Also the human trials and emotional difficulties of a team of kids coming of age and the pressures of competition and fame when the only thing they truly care about is skating with their mates.
I started skating when i was about 10 in the street revolution of skating when bones brigade videos were released. Watching this movie is like traveling back in time and reminds me what life is really about.
I knew the bones brigade movies and have always followed skating. I never knew that Tony Hawk was disliked so much by his peers. To stay in the sport and overcome bullying amplifies his achievement. Also its a real joy to learn more about the rest of the team especially Rodney Mullen, a real genius and captivating person.
It tells the story of the most influential skateboarding crew of all time from the mouths of the skaters themselves. It manages to get a good sense of progression and forward movement that grips you in the same manner that fiction movies do, and features a lot of varied footage and iconography.
Also, Rodney Mullen, one of the biggest legends ever, dispenses so much wisdom in this movie. Wisdom that applies to all art form, not just skateboarding.
The documentary focuses on Rodney Mullen, Tony Hawk, Steve Caballero, Tommy Guerrero, and Lance Mountain, along with their Bones Brigade coach/mentor/father-figure, Stacey Peralta. It chronicles the evolution of skateboarding in the late 70s and through the 80s, the development of tricks such as the ollie, the caballerial, the mctwist, the general climate and lack of acceptance of skateboarding, the transition from pool skating to other types of vert and street skating, the personal struggles some of the Bones Brigade team members went through, and the inspirational triumphs this group of young teens experienced in the 80s.

Rodney Mullen: Tony Hawk won everything; or close to it. That creates so much more pressure because there's no gratification in winning - there's only upholding something so that you don't lose it. And it is staggering. It usurps the joy of it. It's like a Kafka short story. You, you, you... build something but you can't live in the house because you sit around guarding it.
